I thought this was strange too, but the beat writer for K State says it basically boiled down to 2 things: 1) he wanted to get closer to home - New York; 2) he was likely going to continue being a role player because Tang and staff just didn't trust his defensive skills.

I want a transfer who is 7-foot-2 with good hands and doesn't miss the close-in shots.

And free throws at least as good as Thamba's.

It might actually be a blessing for Tang. He caught lightning in the bottle getting to the elite 8 in his first year, with a big home win vs. archrival as well. Pressure should be off to allow him to take a couple of years to build the program up. I don't know what kind of NIL$ they have up there, but I figure there are players who watched what KSU did this year and want in on that.

I think those mentioned above came expecting regular minutes per game. For the most part they went elsewhere to get that playing time. Every program has guys on the bench who only get playing time in blowouts, and stay around because they are good teammates, contribute well in practice, etc. Some folks on this site are way too concerned about the 12th and 13th. guys on the roster.

No team will legitimately play 11-12 players regularly. You're 100% right about the unnecessary obsession with those spots on our bench.

Easy: Kansas last year.



Coleman-Lands and Adams started the year as #11 and #12 in rotation. Pettiford gets injured and Coleman Lands basically gets the minutes. Clemence simply wasn't very good as the backup to Wilson and Adams replaces him as the primary F backup. Even with Self's tendency to play a short rotation, players that started the year deep down the bench played key roles [in one or more games] on the run to a National Championship. They didn't play a ton of minutes but they played some competitive game minutes [including the NC]. Even 2-3 minutes played in a three point NC game win = important.

Re: the debate on the 11th and 12 guys on the roster, I am in the middle on this. I personally feel those spots should be used for high upside / developmental players willing to redshirt, such as Bonner and Grimes. Unfortunately, we just had our 11th and 12 players materially contribute nothing after 3 and 4 years of occupying roster spots that could have been used to stash high-upside players that could be in line to contribute next year or the year after.

On the other hand, I do realize our program is guided by a "culture of JOY" wherein our staff values team culture and won't run guys off who don't pan out the way they hoped they would. As long as they are willing practice players and contribute to the program, we don't run them off. That sends a message to recruits and their families that said culture of JOY isn't just empty rhetoric, but that our staff is loyal to players and will see them through to get their Baylor degree if that is what they choose to do.

Craw, I know you and I have disagreed in the past on 5-stars vs developing underrated/hungry players, but this post sums up BU's current state perfectly. Would rather err on the side of JOY and hit on the Bonners, Grimes and Vitals, but you're right, those types of dudes might never show up if we get a reputation for quickly cutting our losses at the end of the bench.

Nembhard will end up going to the highest paycheck. He knows he has little shot for the league given his size so he's hoping to make cash while he can. There are enough programs out there with NIL dollars that he'll end up with a sweet deal to be able to make as much bank as possible, then eventually head overseas.

That's the trend that's become apparent in the portal. Guys like Nembhard, Cryer and a host of "good" college players who are not serious contenders for a future NBA paycheck, know they need to move and get the biggest NIL dollars they can get while they still have eligibility.

Truth. As a college hoops fan, this is an awful trend. I don't blame the individual players and they are making the smart decision for themselves, but as a fan it sucks. I enjoy seeing guys develop over a 3 or 4 year period.
