Two games in a row where we showed mental and physical toughness. This team is starting to gel and fight through mistakes.

Curious what exactly got CSD tossed

It was being outside the coaches box. Announcers said he never said a word. Ridiculous.

That's it? Coaches are outside the box all the time and don't get called for crap like that.
Remember that the same crew called a third technical on Baylor right after kicking Drew out.

When I was a ref, we were always reminded not to have 'rabbit ears*'.

Guess tonight's crew missed that lesson.

(* rabbit ears - when an official is angry and looks for something he can whistle to punish a player/coach)

Any idea what was said from the bench? I'm guessing what was said was a bunch of nothing.
Yep. Look at the body language, the coaching staff was surprised by the call, while the official was aggressive even before the call. He was looking for something to whistle.

I don't have an issue with the first T. That was because he was on the court, and he was and does it frequently. It's rampant in college basketball and has essentially created 5 on 6 and needs to be stopped. Shaka Smart is one of the worst at it. Calipari does it too. Although tonight TJ should have also gotten one because he did it frequently as well.

The other two techs? I won't be convinced those were for anything other than spite. As you know from being an official, good refs let those things slide even if they hear a slight comment. That one slicked back ref was jawing with Drew two minutes into the game. He almost looked like HE was the one instigating things from afar. Maybe Drew will explain.

Drew does that often but so does almost every other coach.

Exactly THAT.

Huge win, a big confidence builder and just showed incredibly moxy down the stretch.

(Just PLEASE get back in the gym this week and keep practicing those FTs!!!!)

Well, then these officials probably cost us at least 12 points that we would have otherwise had.

The ref you are referring to got butthurt that CSD was (rightfully) making objections to the disparity in fouls, waited patiently, then used a completely innocuous moment in the game to hand him his 2nd tech and exact revenge. It was personal at that point which is something that you should never seen. I mean, that's the stuff you see from MLB umpires.

If that can be proven, it should get him fired and ejected from ever officiating a game again. The game loses its integrity and value when officials cheat like that.

Looking at the video now, you can clearly see he wasn't even close to where Drew was, which means (to me) that he had let his emotional issues or dislike of Drew to take over. Just like you said, that is a guy who shouldn't be an official if he can't put personal things aside. The ref closest to Drew didn't throw Drew out. He just passed by like a normal ref would do.

I think there may have been another early in his Baylor career. I'm uncertain & don't know any details.

That's one of the things you never hear about. There is a shortage of officials, not to mention good ones.

Back when I reffed, the chapter worked to weed out bad officials and coach salvageable officials to improve. Basketball is hard for that, because you have a lot of games and only so many officials. With a shortage of qualified officials now, you see a lot more like what happened tonight. YouTube is full of such incidents,

Officiating crews always do a pre-game review, and usually that's a good thing. You pay attention to the last few games by each team, and you remind your crew what to look for to keep the game safe and flowing smooth.

Tonight's game had a lot of importance. A prime-time game on ESPN, both teams ranked and in the thick of the conference race, and with the earlier results a win or loss would be huge for both Iowa State and Baylor.

Without knowing more, I'd say the officials wanted to call a tight game and let ISU's coaches ride them to the point of bias. Drew has always been more reserved in terms of working officials, and sometimes that hurts him.

Something like being outside your place on the floor should only be called if egregious and affects game play. Neither of those was true. Keep in mind we saw the officials get chippy early in how they spoke to players. I suspect rather than cooling off at halftime, the crew decided they were not being tough enough. and we all saw where that led.

Someone can help me recall: there was a game where Drew simply took off his jacket and threw it behind the bench and was teched for that. But I don't recall in that game if that was his second. After that game, Drew began taking off his jacket before the game started. (Then during COVID he switched to sweats.) Anyone recall that particular "jacket" game?

That was the NIT finals vs Penn State in 2009. He wasn't ejected. Just T'ed up.

That might be it but you might also be thinking about Kim Mulkey and her famous jacket throwing incident.

If it helps anyone, I think maybe Drew's alleged early ejection was mentioned in the Sicem365 documentary An Ode to Joy which offers a great history of the program under Drew. I guess I need to watch episode 2 again!

I'm as big a critic of ADMR as anyone, but his comments on the radio postgame show:

Big12 is the premier league in the nation, it's a dogfight every game, and the officials have to be up to the task. And tonight was an embarrassment.

We fought through our mistakes during our three losses. Just came up short. If ISU had been awarded that last shot, it wouldn't have changed our mental and physical toughness.

Actually a pretty stand-up thing to do b/c criticizing the officiating will probably come with a league fine. So ADMR took the hit to the wallet so CSD didn't have to.

Other than our ability to focus at the free-throw line and knock down foul shots under pressure. Of the things within our control, that would have been the biggest culprit if we had lost.

Fortunately, it didn't end up costing us. But if we had lost another close one, we'd have had a lot of missed free throws to point to and relive.

Agreed. It is evident we are not good at pressure free throws. Not sure if this can be changed or not. It's apparent that Nunn, while providing the winning bucket, is severely challenged at the FT line.

It was total nonsense. That official simply doesn't respect Drew or this team. He made it about him.

I believe it contributed to a 20-2 run or something unprecedented like that. Iowa st wasn't really any good this game. Would have been a robbery had they won.

Unfortunately the team was completely shook after the back to back to back to back to back techs, illegal screen, tech, illegal screen calls. Never seen anything like it.

I was really frustrated that he didn't get the ball immediately back to Love late in the game. That was a lack of self-awareness.

Nunn had played a really good game to that point, but free throws have not been his strength this season. Get that ball to someone who shoots them better and get out with a win.

I know plenty people of people didn't agree with my free throw comments a couple of weeks ago.

It's there and been there if you just observe close enough.
