why trout?
Steven Trout is probably the best (realistic) option because he's young (37). Has Big 12 recruiting experience at WVU. Loads of Texas recruiting experience. This was his first legitimate, non-Covid season as HC and they dominated this year.
A 2-seed in the tournament and 2 outs away from the Super Regionals until they gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th last night. He also won Sun Belt COTY. (FWIW, the Sun Belt had 4 tourney teams this year. It's a fantastic baseball conference.)
One WHALE to watch out for is
Gary Gilmore from Coastal Carolina. Major longshot, he may be tempted. I believe he's in his late 50s. Stunned the country by winning a national title 5+ years ago. Tons of energy. He talks about his faith probably more than nearly every major coach in college athletics.
Of course, there isn't a ton of motivation for him to leave his alma mater although he may want to pass the program on to a younger coach. He's was the highest paid employee at Coastal Carolina until a year ago when Jamey Chadwell got a contract extension.
ECU also has a big-time coach in
Cliff Godwin. Like Gilmore, he's incredibly open about his faith. Came close to landing the LSU job last year and I believe Clemson is looking at him hard. But I also do not believe that Baylor is strong on his radar (and vice versa). Wouldn't be a good fit for a few reasons and I think his dream is to be an SEC HC (which he almost certainly will).
