Why in the world do Trump want to start a trade war with two of our best trading partners?

Trump's love for tariffs is a real head scratcher. If he follows through with this, expect inflation to return with a vengeance and shortages of many products. Will be VERY painful for the middle and lower classes.
He doesn't and won't. Playing some Trump chess and folks are still afraid of the guy.

It's really funny seeing how the Dem's who were once protectionists when Clinton was in office have completely shifted to being anti-American and pro-Globalist in that period of time. Just shows you how powerful the media's social engineering is.

Clinton was not protectionist by any measure. Probably an example of how "anti-globalist" rhetoric has corrupted perspectives.

Yes I know, but Dem voters up to that point were still protectionist. Worded it a bit off earlier. My point was that Clinton ushered in the globalist favoring Dems, and the voters started moving along with them. Now they have moved so far that they are pro one world government and being beholden to the other nations.
Advances in technology and communications in the 90's ushered in a more integrated world economy, and thus "globalism". That ultimately enabled the same with government collaboration, which helped add fuel to the "one world government" theories. Fortunately, that has to be achieved by old fashioned legislation, which we still have some semblance of control over. But we certainly need to be cognizant of our treaties and entanglements, which I agree liberals like to get us into some crazy ones like Climate Accords, extra-national rights, etc.

One world government is not new and fashionable because of tech. It's been a guiding principle since early to mid 20th century for socialists and their financiers.

It explains why he has had so many business failures. He picks unnecessary fights.

I don't see any scenario where any of them take this lying down.
I can only wish to have so many business failures.....and own Mar-a-Lago and iconic real estate in NY city.

You could if your dad left you $500M.
Fake news as usual. You probably think Baylor's paying Finn $750K in NIL money right?

You believe Trump is self made?

Pretty much. He started with more than most but built it far far more than most. You don't think his business and family are highly successful? Looks like the American dream to me. Or do u prefer people building wealth off the backs of the tax payers like the Clintons, Obamas and Bidens?
gonna take a little umbrage there. Trump isn't self made by any stretch. His daddy gave him $444M. Hell, $3B isn't a lot if you start with $444M. I hardly call that self made. I will give him credit for finding a way to the top job in the land.

I didn't say tech created it, only poured fuel on the fire of it. The fact we're still nowhere near it is an acknowledgement of A. how difficult it would be to pull off and B. how overhyped the imminence of it actually occurring is.

Arguing exactly how qualified a billionaire is to an arbitrary level of 'self made'.

As if any of us could have possibly accomplished even 10 % of what Trump has done.

As if any of us could have withstood the years of personal attacks, lawfare, and assassination attempts.

Back to the OP. They majority of the economist types I respect say that the proposed tariffs as Trump has stated (won't happen to that extent) will raise cost to the American consumer around $2600. Can't square that for the folks on the lower end of the income scale.

Quite an accomplishment to start with $500 million and grow that into a multibillion dollar empire. Most successful businessmen have done failures along the way. This is true of people in general. The key is learning from mistakes: what one does after.

I wouldn't call starting with $413??? Really? You may want to stick to history, not business. It's like having $100k and turning it to $200k and so on.

Why in the world do Trump want to start a trade war with two of our best trading partners?

Trump's love for tariffs is a real head scratcher. If he follows through with this, expect inflation to return with a vengeance and shortages of many products. Will be VERY painful for the middle and lower classes.

It explains why he has had so many business failures. He picks unnecessary fights.

I don't see any scenario where any of them take this lying down.

Christian vs non Christian
Conservative vs Liberal
Baylor Bear vs longhorn$$$
Athlete vs non-athlete
Good singer (wife) vs not-as-good-but-highly-entertaining-at-karaoke (me)

Everyone on here defines people by various thing all day. Its not wrong. Makes it way easier to know what they stand for, like, are good at, have an interest in, etc.

Saw similar results along the Santa Theresa , New Mexico border wall in 2018.

Trump threatened only 5 % tariff and then by magic Mexican federal army troops are patrolling the border in full body armor carrying automatic rifles.

Then Biden stopped everything and opened the border.

Somehow , someway I hope he pays for his crimes.

No. There are plenty of conservatives of other faiths or no faith. There are quite a few prominent Jewish conservatives, for example. Also, some atheists are although they might be more libertarian than conservative.

I'm using the word "conservative" here the way it's used most often but I mean classical liberal.

agreed. I was looking for a response from Mr. Horn marrying man, as he seemed to indicate that one had to be a Christian to be Conservative. Just curious.

it's the hammer he will use in negotiations. He's reminding allies that he expects concessions, that the Cold War is over and we are no longer going to give sweetheart deals to empower allies.
If you have a company that's losing a lot of money, you can't fix it by tweaking the margins. You have to make big improvements on big numbers. You have to slash payroll. You have to divest all or parts of divisions. Etc.....

If you want to improve your trade numbers, you have to start by making big improvements with your largest trade partners. If you don't, you'll never be able to make the math work in your favor.

According to a couple of Border Patrol agents I met in 2018 along the Border Wall in southern New Mexico......
Trump threatened a 5% tariff against Mexican imports if they didn't stop illegals in Mexico from even approaching the Wall.

The Border Patrol agents then pointed out a Mexican federal army trooper with full body armor and an automatic rifle walking along the Mexican side of the Wall.

Trump's threat had obviously made an impact.

( took a few pictures of the Mexican trooper to show my family )

This is why I believe what will ultimately happen is Mexico and Canada will both suddenly start caring about cracking down on illegals traversing their country to get into the USA as well as the fentanyl traffic - which will result in the tariffs either never being actually imposed or not lasting long at all. They know they're no longer dealing with a dementia stricken Obama puppet.

Our media will have a ****……but such tariffs would devastate the economies of both Mexico and Canada.

The real danger is from the Mexican drug cartels. They could activate assassination squads already present in the US to kill dozens of our political leadership.

Doesn't Mexico and the US know where these cartel *******s live. Give Mexico a few months to go scorched earth on the cartels, and if they fail, bomb every mansion owned by every one of the *******s.

This is one reason I want DeSantis as SecD. He will use US military to shut it down. He is very good at finding legal ways to follow through.

You will never solve big numbers on the cost side, things are already lean. Cutting a percent here or there is not the answer. You have to do it for too many years and it curtails innovation which is the life lood of growth. It has to be on the revenue side. The big winners, Apple, Google, Musk, Bezos do not think in terms of cutting, they think in terms of expanding.
