It has always been advisable to exercise some responsibility, even during the days of "The Powers that be," but the quality of journalism has declined, even though you can still find plenty of good journalism if you know what to look for and you look for it. CATV networks like Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are not what I would characterize as good journalism, and the line between opinion and news journalism has been largely obliterated with them even in stories that are presented as news. I've gone into depth on this topic before. Infotainment, budget cuts as print media shrunk, etc. There has been a decline but good journalism is still worth hunting for. The responsibility ultimately rests with us to be discerning consumers.

The Intercept (although Greenwald left in a weird snit over being edited), The Atlantic, 1/20 of The New Republic, The Guardian, The Economist. The NYT can be a mess (WMDs in Iraq, Bradley Manning, etc.) but it still has responsible journos on staff.
As to non-print BBC &NPR are excellent. Most of the bias at public radio stations is in the choice of stories covered or in the shows that come from public outlets besides NPR. (Democracy Now being one example.)
I enjoy the Texas Tribune when I can get it on the radio.

I haven't seen them (not available on my TV), but WGN America was trying to do news as news. Not sure how that worked out. The Economist has been pretty good for a long time for in depth pieces. Basically, if you know what should be in a well done news story and how it should be written, you can figure out from the content what they did wrong and it is fairly easy to fill in the gaps and basically rewrite it in your head. It is, however, more work than just having good coverage to begin with. In general, print is better than television.
