Immunities. These are the kinds of things that were only said in certain circles up until now but would make you a pariah in polite society. How on earth have they become kosher for left-wing politicians and the New York Times?

Unfortunately this pandemic happened in an election year.

Thousands died unnecessarily.
Will we be any better prepared for an emerging virus that is more virulent, transmissible and deadly?

I believe so......a little .

The feds have streamlined various testing and procurement processes which would help in a future pandemic.

Unfortunately a significant percentage of our society will remain just as narcissistic and ignorant as they were in 1918.

mass shootings are not political ploys either but, they are certainly politicized just as COVID has been and will continue to be.

Over 400,000 US citizens have now died of Covid 19 in less than a year .

Far more than the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf Wars .....combined .

No, but I am trying to do things that reduce my risk.

I have been really annoyed by the coverage of the vaccines, then I read something from the NYT in my email that I liked, mostly because it agrees with what I already thought!

I know, until we reach herd immunity . Whenever that is .

Without the vaccines we would certainly surpass even the 1918 numbers. Still might .

I'm afraid you may be right. I'm not sure we can roll out the vaccines and distribute them fast enough to slow this down.

It may be close in raw numbers even with a vaccine, though probably not due to improving treatment, but to match the Spanish Flu in terms of impact on the population would require about 2,000,000 deaths in the U.S. Thankfully, that is not likely even without a vaccine. With the new administration looking to push out 100,000,000 vaccines in the first 100 days (and, one assumes, many more to follow), the pandemic should be stopped in its tracks by the middle of the summer.

Greatly reduced by mid summer yes....worst over yes.....not stopped .

Too many adults will insist on not getting vaccinated . Then comes the inevitable impact of open schools come fall .

Unless there are production bottlenecks, and they have seemed pretty confident about production capacity, this is a matter of will, not ability. To quote a former president, "Yes, we can."

Schools are open now in many places. They are not likely to have "the inevitable impact" you are talking about in the fall if they aren't having it now.

https://www.npr.org/2020/10/21/925794511/were-the-risks-of-reopening-schools-exaggerated

Getting people to take the vaccine may be the biggest challenge. I have talked with some people who say they won't get it, but most would take the shot in the eye if it had to be administered that way. It does not help to have had some of our leaders question its safety without evidence.

None of which factor into government decision making.

I'm going to need an explanation on the renewed openings. I'm ok with them, but NY for example is up 40-100% in daily cases from their worst days in April. Similar numbers if you track Illinois and DC. Why now and not back in late Summer through the Fall? Serious question.

They were the government that made the decisions they did. They shut down. They installed mask mandates. They oversaw testing, etc.

Unless people are voters...
