Olympics - USWNT and other Olympic teams take a knee at kickoff

I realize most here think this is an anti-American thing, but racism is a big deal in international soccer. In between February and the Olympics we had the Euro Finals.

They don't care. They don't know the racist abuse that Sancho, Saka, and Rashford received after missing penalties for England in the Euro championship a couple of weeks ago. They don't care that black players have bananas thrown at them from the stands and monkey sounds made at them.

They don't care. They just care about their magic sky cloth and "muh freedoms".

I am careful to be accurate on when they have been doing what. Yes, lots of media are getting the information wrong.

But the truth is for the casual fan, Megan Rapinoe and her ego are the face of the USWNT.
She complains about everything in her life and seems like a miserable person.

Other leagues have knelt as well for the anthem but this is as about as bad a marketing campaign as you could ask for the USWNT.

Ohh i know, I wasn't calling you out specifically or anything, just being general.

Yes, like you mentioned to the casual, if they stay up late to watch the Olympics soccer tourney and they're greeted by that, it's a turn off, not gonna lie. I'm in the camp of I don't care what they do it's their personal choice.

I care plenty. It's appalling, and that's not even a strong enough word. But, I look at it differently. I use what happens in Europe (and not just to soccer players) whenever folks says how racist the US is compared to Europe and other countries. We have nothing like that, and haven't in decades. It is commonplace in Europe. And the whole kneeling thing has never been about Europe. European clubs started doing it to protest what they perceived as US racial injustice - basically copied what some of our athletes were doing. Frankly, they did it to pile on the US. They have every right to do that, but ironic they didn't do it while their own players and teammates were suffering this overt abuse all along. That said, I love how European player finally are taking a stand and walking off the pitch when the crap happens. That I very much respect.

Straw man? Those things are actually happening. Mike responded to my post, and I responded the situations are completely different. I don't want political protests during games, period, and I've been clear I oppose the anthem protests. But, when these disgusting things happen during the game and on the field, I support the players standing up for their brothers and sisters.

First off, while I don't disagree that fans in various sports behave poorly or worse, you did not actually provide any links showing what you claim is really happening. Also, you appeared to imply US fans have done this, which I believe is completely untrue.

It's one thing, and I agree, for players who are actually directly attacked or insulted to leave the field in protest. It's very, very different for self-impressed egotists to demand fans serve their personal politics just because they can kick a ball or throw it.

Euros kneel "against" America, when in fact they are more racist than America.

Everybody should condemn Euro fans who are openly and blatantly racist against blacks, and some have been all along. But, kneeling has nothing to do with condemning the Euro's. It is a unique condemnation of America, which is probably the least racist integrated Country in the world.

Swedes have no voice in this matter, being a generally homogenous society of 10 million people, of which only about 100,000 are black.

"We are delighted that the IOC has made room for athletes to use their voices for good at the Olympic Games and are proud of our athletes for making a global stand for greater racial equality," said Rob Waddell, who is the New Zealand Olympic Committee's chef de mission for the Tokyo Games.

"Taking the knee was something we spoke about as a group. We feel so strongly and we want to show we're united," said Steph Houghton, one of Britain's co-captains, as quoted by the BBC. "We want to fight all forms of discrimination and as a group of women, we wanted to kneel against it."

Talks about the recent event at the Euros

I'm not sure what order these pictures are gonna pop up in but:

North London Derby, Arsenal and Tottenham. Tottenham fans threw bananas at Pierre Emerick Aubameyang

Rostov FC in Russia threw bananas and did monkey chants at the black players from PSV during a Champion's League match.

Dani Alves for Barcelona at the time had bananas thrown out at him, I did like his response of picking it up and eating it, but yeah...

That's just three incidents and there's a bunch more I could go through and list. It's a problem over there, a very common problem.

Portland Thorns FC defender and U.S. women's soccer star Crystal Dunn is set to appear in her second Summer Olympics.

She is one of the best in the world at her craft.

The winger previously played for Washington Spirit, Chelsea and North Carolina Courage.
Even as she continues to become a bigger and bigger Women's soccer star, she hasn't been fully appreciated.

Dunn opened up about facing common problems that Black women encounter in a recent interview with Mariah Lee of The Undefeated.

"I feel like someone has dimmed my light in a sense," Dunn told The Undefeated.
As the article notes, Black women are supported less, compensated less and protected less and the world of women's soccer is no exception.

For Dunn, she explained how she feels that she receives less publicity compared with her contemporaries, and fewer endorsement deals.
Many have wondered why the now 29-year-old did not earn a spot on the 2015 national team.

The U.S. coaching staff said that Dunn didn't "fit" what they were looking for in 2015
Dunn and Rachel Van Hollebeke were the last players to get cut from the team.
United States women's national soccer team Jill Ellis told The Equalizer in 2015 that "both of them were incredibly professional. They understood the process, understood how competitive it was and they were a class act, both of them. It was an extremely tough decision, because they both offer different things to their positions and it really coming down to what I was looking for."

But now six years later, Dunn is still looking for change for dark-skinned Black women.
"I think as a woman of color on this team, especially a dark-skinned woman, I've always felt pressure," Dunn said. "I think I am now currently in a position where I am feeling more valued, but for a large part of my career, no We need to feel like we can exist in a space that may not have been set up for us to exist in."

You kind of just proved her point about being under appreciated and not recognized. She's a defender, probably the best the USWNT has. Being a defender by trade she's not going to get much publicity. But the US Soccer Federation could easily promote her as being one of their best players and a "star" like Rapinoe, Ertz, Morgan, Holiday, and so on and so forth down the line. Why don't they?? I'm not saying it's entirely based on race, but it could be a possibility that'd be worth looking into.

USWNT soccer players who are known
1) Megan Rapinoe - pink hair, and loud mouth
2) Alex Morgan - tall and pretty
3) Carli Lloyd - been on the team forever and can kick a 50+ yard FG.

That's the list.

Simone Biles makes $$$$, Serena Williams makes $$$$. It is possible but most people don't care about a 5'1" female soccer defender. That's reality.

Feb 2021 - USWNT said they won't take a knee anymore during anthem anymore.

Quotes from England and New Zealand, no mention of the US.

Thanks for this quote. Maybe now that Trump is gone, the protest will be aimed where they belong. Quit kneeling before the flag, which though the flag of an imperfect nation, look at what it has done right and hopefully will continue moving toward a more perfect union.

Look at each recognized disenfranchised group, see their outcomes in their native land, then compare that to their outcomes in America, even though started in imperfection, and not having yet reached perfection, nor will it ever reach such, it is the land of opportunity. That opportunity can be seized by all.

Kneeling against the American flag in modern times, is a foolish endeavor. Teach those still left behind, how to get out of their self imposed shackles, it is there waiting, you have to know how to grasp it. If it means being taught how to, then by all means teach, but groveling in self despair is fruitless and will accomplish nothing.

How are y'all gonna feel when white people start "walking off the effin pitch" because of racism against them that's happening daily as much as racism vs others???

Will you "respect that" equally?
There's nothing analogous to fans throwing bananas and blatantly racist chanting during the matches.
Looking forward to when you abandon the strawman and actually answer the topic.

Just google, it happens a lot in Europe and some in S America also. No, I did not say it happened here. Quite the contrary, I said the kneeling Europeans are hypocritical, as are those who say the US is racist and point to other countries - usually EU - as shining examples. BTW I've attended an int'l soccer match where some Italian fans made monkey chants. I was shocked.

Your claim, your duty to support.

I already said I can believe that kind of thing happens, but

A) you were too lazy to support your claim, and

B) just because some idiot does it doesn't mean you get to broad-brush all sports fans with it.

That which does not kill me, will try again and get nastier

All sports fans???? Try European soccer fans and only an awful subgroup. Glad to send some links after work but anyone with an even rudimentary knowledge of soccer knows this is a problem in Europe.

Not sure why USWNT is appealing a ruling of Equal Pay the same week as the Olympics...

USWNT to fight U.S. Soccer in equal pay row: Appeal says judge's decision 'defies reality'

Quote:

More than a year after a judge dismissed their equal pay lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation, the U.S. women's national team has appealed, arguing that the judge's ruling "is legally wrong, and it defies reality."

The legal team representing the USWNT players, who are in Tokyo competing in the Olympics, filed the appeal on Friday, which asks the appellate court to "reverse the decision of the district court and remand the case for trial."

"There is nothing quite like entering a stadium and hearing thousands of our supporters vigorously chanting 'Equal Pay,'" winger Tobin Heath said in a statement. "We enter this next phase of our legal fight with the same energy we bring to each of our matches."

The appeal is the latest twist in the long-standing fight between the USWNT and U.S. Soccer, and ensures it won't be going away any time soon.

A judge dismissed the case last year, accepting U.S. Soccer's accounting that showed the women had been paid more per game than the men. Now the women are arguing that the judge ignored how performances increased their pay rate, all while their bonuses for winning were smaller than for the men.

"To argue that women should have to work harder and achieve more in order to earn the same as men is simply wrong -- both morally and legally," midfielder Samantha Mewis said in a statement. "We are pleased to be moving forward with the next phase of our lawsuit so that we can finally achieve what we -- and all women -- deserve: equality."

"We believe in our case and know our value," Megan Rapinoe said in a statement. "It's time the USSF does too."
