Thursday, October 12th
West Virginia 20 at Houston 31
The Mountaineers have started the season stronger than most would have expected but in this one they are going on the road to take on a Houston team who needs a big win. Donovan Smith totals 350 yards as he scorches the WVU secondary, Matthew Golden has two touchdown receptions. Garrett Greene runs for over 100 yards and passes for over 100 yards as he keeps WVU in it until the 4th quarter when Dana Holgorsen dials up a fake punt that is promptly followed by a Tony Mathis 40-yard touchdown run to ice this game. Holgorsen and Mathis get revenge on the Mountaineers.
Saturday, October 14th
Iowa State 17 at Cincinnati 20
This is going to be a slug fest as both defenses play at a very high level while both offenses struggle to get anything going. The Cyclones turn to true freshman JJ Kohl who shows flashes with some explosive plays but turns it over three times. Cincy doesn’t do anything tremendous in the game but they convert red zone opportunities and score 17 points off turnovers. A late touchdown run by Emory Jones puts the game out of reach and gets the Bearcats a much-needed win.
Kansas 21 at Oklahoma State 38
The Cowboys find a rhythm on the ground against one of the worst run defenses in the country as Ollie Gordon and Jaden Nixon combine for 250 yards and four touchdowns. That one-two punch opens cup some chances in the play action game while also allowing the pokes to dominate time of possession 41 minutes to 19 minutes. Jalon Daniels does all he can to keep the Jayhawks in the game but it’s not enough on the road as they are pretty much dominated throughout.
BYU 28 at TCU 30
Much closer than expected in Fort Worth as the Horned Frogs get caught looking ahead to its very tough stretch coming up. The Cougars are able to run the football with Aidan Robbins who totals 150 yards and two scores. This gives them a chance to control tempo which they do for the most part but a couple missed throws from Kedon Slovis helps keep TCU close enough throughout. Chandler Morris hits a couple explosive plays early to JP Richardson and Savion Williams but that is pretty much it as BYU holds a 28-20 lead going into the 4th quarter. Emani Bailey and Trey Sanders lead a long drive that is capped off by a Bailey 5-yard touchdown run which puts the score at 28-27. Kadon Slovis misses Keanu Hill on a 3rd down throw which leads to a punt. Chandler Morris gets the ball back with three minutes left. He finds JoJo Earle and Jared Wiley on a couple throws then hits a big play to JP Richardson to get them in field goal range. They run the clock down before sending Griffin Kell out to win the game, he hits it. Frogs survive.
Kansas State 28 at Texas Tech 38
The Wildcats are on a roll right now while the Red Raiders are desperate for a win which sets up a major upset opportunity in Lubbock. Tyler Shough and this Tech offense get rolling early and often as he throws two touchdowns, one to Drae McCray and Jerand Bradley, and runs in another all in the first half as Tech takes a 24-14 lead at half time. Both offenses trade scores in the 3rd quarter as Tahj Brooks and DJ Giddens both score on the ground. Will Howard finds Phillip Brooks for a 45-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 31-28. But the Red Raiders respond with a long drive capped off by a Tahj Brooks 12-yard touchdown to finish the drive. Will Howard has to make some things happen with just four minutes left in the game but he is strip sacked by Steve Linton on 4th down which puts the game away.
