RALEIGH, N.C. — The No. 9-seed Baylor Men’s Basketball team (20-14, 10-10 Big 12) withstood a late push by the No. 8-seed Mississippi State Bulldogs (21-13, 8-10 SEC) to win its NCAA Tournament first-round matchup by a score of 75-72.
Robert Wright played his best when the lights were brightest, scoring 19 points to lead the Bears in scoring and knocking down some big late free throws to keep the pressure on Mississippi State.
Fellow freshman VJ Edgecombe scored 16 points and was robbed of perhaps the signature game-sealing bucket by the officials calling the foul on the floor.
Veterans Langston Love and Norchad Omier also reach double-figure scoring with 15 and 12 points respectively. Omier added nine rebounds, narrowly missing out on his 22nd double-double of the season.
The Bulldogs battled hard to erase a deficit that grew as big as 11 points, with star guard Josh Hubbard scoring 26 points on 17 shots.
