Team: Dallas Cowboys
Draft Year: 1988
College: Miami
Position: Wide receiver
Analysis: This was the first truly difficult call between a current and former player, but it was hard to stray from two objective facts: Irvin is the only Hall of Famer in the group, and he's a three-time Super Bowl champion. However, he was a First Team All-Pro just once (1991), the only season he ever led the league in receiving yards. It also started a stretch in which he eclipsed 1,000 yards seven times in eight seasons. Irvin also set a record in 1995 with 11 games of at least 100 yards.
Then there's defensive lineman
J.J. Watt (Houston Texans, 2011), a three-time Defensive Player of the Year and five-time First Team All-Pro. He is a slam-dunk Hall of Famer. Watt also hasn't had any postseason success, but that's more on the organization than him. Conversely, could the juggernaut Cowboys have won three Super Bowls without Irvin? That's too subjective and unfair to Irvin.
Linebacker DeMarcus Ware (Dallas Cowboys, 2005) is also a likely Hall of Famer, and quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers, 2004) will have a case as well.
17. Emmitt Smith
Team: Dallas Cowboys
Draft Year: 1990
College: Florida
Position: Running back
Analysis: Smith is the all-time leader with 18,355 rushing yards and 164 rushing touchdowns. He was the NFL's rushing leader four times in a span of five years, surpassed 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons and is a three-time Super Bowl champion, one-time MVP, four-time First Team All-Pro, eight-time Pro Bowler and a member of the All-1990s Team.
Guard Steve Hutchinson (Seattle Seahawks, 2001) is the only other Hall of Famer among No. 17 picks.
well, kinda Dallas for about 2 minutes
29. Steve Wisniewski
Team: Dallas Cowboys
Draft Year: 1989
College: Penn State
Position: Guard
Analysis: Drafted by the Cowboys before a trade to the Los Angeles Raiders, Wisniewski has a strong case for the Hall of Fame but hasn't gotten the call. He missed just two games in 13 seasons, was a two-time First Team All-Pro, eight-time Pro Bowler and member of the All-1990s Team.
There weren't any Hall of Famers in this group.
