Lesson #1: don't **** with Jerry
Lesson #2: see #1

Jerry Jones an unofficial member of committee negotiating Roger Goodell's contract
Posted by Mike Florio on September 1, 2017, 4:35 PM EDT

In theory, there are ways that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones could officially challenge the NFL's suspension of running back Ezekiel Elliott, if he wants. Unofficially, Jones has a far more effective way of wreaking a little havoc for 345 Park Avenue. And he's currently doing it.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Jones has made himself into, essentially, an ad hoc member of the Compensation Committee. Though not one of the three owners who officially joined the three existing owners in May for the purposes of negotiating Commissioner Roger Goodell's extension, committee chairman Arthur Blank has allowed Jones to have a role and a voice in the process of hammering out Goodell's proposed new deal.

It's possible Blank regrets it. Per the source, Jones has been very aggressive about the matter, a concern that traces back to the owners-only meeting in March, during which Jones raised before his peers a variety of issues regarding the way the league does business. (In addition to his issues with the process for negotiating the Commissioner's deal, Jones also expressed concerns about the league's approach to marijuana, and regarding the league's system for investigating player misconduct.)

Jones had been aggressive about Goodell's contract even before Jones had specific reason to be reportedly "furious" about the suspension of Elliott. Now, with Elliott suspended and NFL Director of Investigations Kia Roberts reportedly testifying that she did not find Elliott's accuser to be credible, Jones has even more reason to stick to his guns.

While Jones' unofficially role on the Compensation Committee had not been officially announced, he hinted at it when cryptically declining to comment recently on whether he supports a five-year extension for Goodell.

"That's obviously an internal, very internal thing and I would not comment about it," Jones said on August 22. "And I don't want that to be interpreted. I just will not comment about it. I'm one of the people that are basically involved in how that is being negotiated. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment about it."

In hindsight, it's perhaps convenient that someone leaked the news of a Goodell extension being close to finalized a week after after the Elliott suspension was announced, and nearly two weeks about the Elliott appeal landed in litigation and another controversy for the league office. Perhaps Goodell and whoever is negotiating on his behalf wanted to get the deal done and in place (or close to it) before Jerry decides that he wants to delay the package, diminish its value, or derail it entirely.

Jones also could pursue legal options against the NFL for the Elliott suspension, even though the Cowboys haven't been directly punished. Such efforts likely would have a remote chance of prevailing, assuming that the league's constitution and bylaws have been crafted in a way that makes it hard for any one team to upset the proverbial apple cart. However, it would be significant and stunning to see Jones essentially go rogue against his business partners.

Maybe he'll use the threat of that simply to get his way when it comes to whatever terms are, or aren't, being offered to Goodell.

Bears waived/injured QB Connor Shaw. Shaw is recovering from "minor" ankle surgery. The team decided to waive Shaw in May but then changed its mind. With the Bears rolling three deep at quarterback, Shaw will be released with an injury settlement once he gets healthy.

--
49ers released QB Matt Barkley. The writing was on the wall for Barkley when third-round rookie C.J. Beathard played ahead of him in the Niners' second and third preseason games. Barkley had a quiet preseason, completing just 13-of-21 passes for 197 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. With Barkley out of the mix, Beathard will open the year as the primary backup to Brian Hoyer in San Francisco.

Cowboys released Ronnie Hillman. It is a surprise after Hillman worked as the No. 3 back in the third preseason game. A veteran whose contract will guarantee if he is on the roster Week 1, it is possible the Cowboys bring him back later in the season. Releasing him suggests Dallas both believes Ezekiel Elliott will be available Week 1 and plan to keep Alfred Morris.

Not sure why they think this is a surprise. IMO he was a camp body

Panthers waived CB Zack Sanchez. Sanchez was injured in the preseason finale. Last year's fifth-rounder, Sanchez played just 89 defensive snaps as a rookie before going to the practice squad. He could very well end up back there at some point soon.

Closer Look: Position By Position Breakdown Of Cowboys' 53-Man Roster
Saturday, September 02, 2017 3:06 PM CDT

By David Helman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas At long last, the Cowboys have a 53-man roster.

Now, obviously that's just a starting point. An NFL roster is never truly finalized, and the Cowboys proved that on Saturday afternoon by trading a conditional draft pick for veteran corner Bene Benwikere.

The roster can and likely will change again before too long. But for the time being, here is a closer look at the Cowboys' active roster heading into Week 1:

Quarterback (2): Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush Rush was one of the biggest stories of training camp, and that is even more evident as the preseason draws to a close. The undrafted rookie was an afterthought a month ago, and now he is one of just two quarterbacks on the roster. Rush clearly outplayed incumbent backup Kellen Moore over the course of the last five weeks, and his efforts have been rewarded. Of course, the hope is that he won't have to play at all, as Prescott is primed to build on his Pro Bowl rookie season. But if something should happen to Prescott, it will be interesting to see if the Cowboys stick with Rush or look for veteran help.

Running back (5): Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris, Rod Smith, Keith Smith For the second-straight year, it's a full house in the Dallas backfield. This is one of the more fluid situations on the roster, as it remains to be seen what will happen with Elliott's ongoing suspension appeal. For the time being, he's on the active roster. With the uncertainty around the starter, it makes sense to keep several insurance policies in the shape of McFadden and Morris. Rod Smith was solid throughout the preseason, and his abilities on special teams helped him win a roster spot. In the span of two seasons, Keith Smith has developed from a developmental longshot to a roster lock.

Wide Receiver (6): Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Brice Butler, Ryan Switzer, Noah Brown This will be the first time since 2012 the Cowboys carry six receivers on their initial 53-man roster, which is a testament to how good Brown was during training camp. It's hard to imagine him having much of a role on game day unless there are injuries, but the front office clearly didn't want to expose him to the waiver wire. The rest of this group is a no-brainer. The Cowboys' top four receivers are back together for a third consecutive season, and Ryan Switzer should have a sizable role on special teams as a rookie.

Tight End (4): Jason Witten, James Hanna, Geoff Swaim, Rico Gathers Yet another fluid situation. Rico Gathers is still in the concussion protocol and may need to be placed on injured reserve. However, in order to recall him from injured reserve later in the year, the Cowboys must have him on the roster to start the season. It's likely this situation changes soon. The rest of the tight end depth chart is a no-brainer, with Jason Witten leading the way in his 15th season with the team.

Offensive Line (8): Tyron Smith, Jonathan Cooper, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, La'el Collins, Chaz Green, Joe Looney, Byron Bell Eight is not a big number for a position as physical as offensive line, but the Cowboys have done it before especially with a group this talented. Four of the starting five are set in stone, though the coaching staff still needs to officially determine a starting left guard. This group is all about versatility. Green can play both tackle and guard, while Looney can play center and guard. Byron Bell played four positions both guard spots and both tackle spots during training camp.

Defensive Line (8): DeMarcus Lawrence, Maliek Collins, Stephen Paea, Tyrone Crawford, Benson Mayowa, Taco Charlton, Cedric Thornton, Charles Tapper Again, eight is a bit of a small number for the defensive line, but that is influenced by the suspensions of David Irving and Damontre' Moore. Irving will miss the first four games of the season, while Moore will miss the first two. It will be interesting to see where the Cowboys cut from to bring them back to the lineup. For the time being, it's interesting that the Cowboys are heading into the season with just three full-fledged defensive tackles. It was widely speculated that either Joey Ivie or Lewis Neal would make the active roster, but the team opted to waive both. This could be a situation where the front office scours the waiver wire in search of an upgrade. But it's worth noting that Crawford has the versatility to play in several different spots.

Linebacker (7): Sean Lee, Damien Wilson, Justin Durant, Jaylon Smith, Kyle Wilber, Mark Nzeocha, Anthony Hitchens This is probably more than the Cowboys originally intended to carry, but the injury to Anthony Hitchens forced their hand. Hitchens' injury isn't as bad as initially thought to the point that it doesn't look like the Cowboys will move him to injured reserve. That said, he'll be unavailable for the first few weeks of the season, which probably helped Mark Nzeocha grab a roster spot. Nzeocha will be useful on special teams. Look for Justin Durant and Jaylon Smith to combine in helping to replace Hitchens at middle linebacker.

Defensive Backs (10): Orlando Scandrick, Nolan Carroll, Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, Bene Benwikere, Byron Jones, Jeff Heath, Kavon Frazier, Xavier Woods The Cowboys clearly didn't feel good about the back end of the cornerback depth chart after Awuzie and Lewis missed time during training camp. To rectify that, they traded for a fourth-year veteran in Benwikere. That addition gives the Cowboys a more veteran presence while Awuzie and Lewis get up to speed. In the meantime, the rest of the group looks as-expected. There are veterans aplenty at the top of the depth chart. Though it is worth nothing that the Cowboys opted for youth at safety. Young draft picks Frazier and Woods made the team over veterans like Robert Blanton and Jameill Showers.

Special Teams (3): Dan Bailey, Chris Jones, L.P. Ladouceur -- This remains one of the easiest parts of the roster to project. The trio of Bailey, Jones and Ladouceur is back for a seventh consecutive season. Bailey and Ladouceur have both made the Pro Bowl, while Jones just signed a four-year extension with the team last month.

Get used to hearing the name Amos Mazzant
Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2017, 11:07 AM EDT

U.S.D.C. for Eastern District of Texas
Saturday's frenetic pace of trades and cuts and waivers and other roster moves gave the NFL a one-day respite from the Ezekiel Elliott case. But the lawsuit, filed two days ago in Texas, will be a major focal point over the next few days.

And in the same way the name "Richard Berman" became well-known in NFL circles two years ago, "Amos Mazzant" is about to become a short-term pro football celebrity. Formally known as the Honorable Amos L. Mazzant III, he's the judge who was assigned to the Elliott case. And Judge Mazzant will commence his official involvement on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. ET, when he convenes a hearing on the question of whether Elliott's suspension will be stayed pending the resolution of the litigation.

So who is Judge Mazzant? For starters, he may not be a Cowboys fan. In fact, there's a chance he's the opposite.

Mazzant grew up in Ellwood City. Not Ellwood City, Texas (if there even is one). Mazzant grew up in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, a town nestled 40 miles to the northwest of Pittsburgh.

Born in 1965, Mazzant came of age during the Steelers dynasty of the 1970s. Unless he was a contrarian who opted not to become a Steelers fan because everyone else around him was shoving him in that direction (a certain 1965-born blogger who grew up 60 miles to the southwest of Pittsburgh can relate), Judge Mazzant at some layer of his epidermis bleeds black and gold. Which means that, at some layer of his heart, he possibly hates the team from Texas that faced the Steelers in Super Bowl X and XIII and that competed directly with the Steelers for the perception of football supremacy in that era.

Judge Mazzant got an undergraduate degree from Pitt, before a scholarship took him to Baylor for law school and kept him ever since then in Texas. So maybe he's developed an affinity for the Cowboys over the last three decades. Or maybe proximity has made his disdain for them even greater.

This doesn't necessarily mean Judge Mazzant will do to Elliott what Jack Lambert once did to Cliff Harris. Indeed, these dynamics are supposed to be irrelevant when the time comes to apply the law to the facts in any and every given case. Regardless of whether Judge Mazzant showed a streak of independence when the environment of his youth would have pushed him toward becoming a fan of the Steelers, Judge Mazzant who was appointed to the bench by Barack Obama previously attracted national attention by blocking the nationwide implementation of an Obama-proposed rule that would have doubled the salary limit for eligibility for overtime pay. This pro-business ruling points to a philosophy that could be very good news to the NFL.

It may sound overly simplistic, but judges develop clear reputations for issuing decisions that favor either employees or employers. And the trend typically holds, given that big-picture attitudes fueling the individual rulings tend to bubble up in each and every case the judge handles.

In this case, the pro-business outcome would be a dismissal the case as being filed prematurely, or perhaps deference to the potential lawsuit the NFL will file in New York City after arbitrator Harold Henderson affirms the suspension. Judge Mazzant also could keep the case and decide on Tuesday that, although Elliott would indeed suffer "irreparable harm" if he is forced to miss games and later wins a ruling that the suspension was flawed, the likelihood of success is so small that there's no reason to let him use the court system as a way to slam the brakes on the banishment for a full year or longer.

So why did Elliott file the lawsuit in Judge Mazzant's court? He's one of seven judges serving in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, and the process of picking one is (or at least is supposed to be) random. Also, any ruling from Judge Mazzant will be subject to appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and if two of the three judges randomly assigned to handle the appeal agree with Elliott, Elliott will prevail.

None of that will matter, however, if Judge Mazzant's Tuesday ruling doesn't block the suspension. It will be the first, and arguably most important, decision in the case. While Elliott could still win later (which would help the NFL Players Association in its ongoing push-and-pull with the NFL over the Commissioner's power over players), once Elliott misses six games it will be game over as far as most will be concerned.

Cowboys released LB Mark Nzeocha.

The Cowboys needed to clear a roster spot for LB Jayrone Elliott. Nzekocha has had trouble staying healthy, missing time with an Achilles injury last year and undergoing a knee scope in June. He's played just 16 snaps since entering the league as a seventh-round pick in 2015.
