That is part of the risk you take though. No one that Grant would be good. No one thought much of Briles. Even Rhule was just a coach to watch when hired here but not a hot name.

Same for lots of other guys. LSU thought Kelly was a home run. Kansas thought they had something with Miles. Or their current coach. And on and on.

There is no guarantee that just because a guy won somewhere else he will win at another school, even if that school is a step up, has bigger pockets, better conference, facilities, etc.

The bolded is one of the most overlooked considerations here - Baylor should be looking for a coach that is exceeding expectations even when accounting for recruiting, geographic, historical, infrastructure, financial, schedule, and conference-based advantages. To that end, washed up or underperforming coaches at elite programs are definitely not the answer.

LOL classic!

That dude is hilarious.
But I would beg to differ.
He would be what ucla considers a Southern Cal man, not a bruin.
With their academic, elitist attitudes over USC, this dude's looks, along with a name like Asher, and he would be what they see as USC material through and through. lol
But then again, you never know. That guy could be a ucla undergrad.
Numerous guys in my SC classes who were fellow surfers, weren't far off from this dude and they were actually quite smart.
And one of the smartest chicks in my hs graduating class and also went to SC could have been the prototype for the Valley Girl.

Feel bad for Oregon St fans. Complete dumpster fire that is undeserved by a loyal fanbase.

May SC and UCLA never win again for what they'd did to burn a great conference

What? So now the PAC was a "great conference"?

I thought the PAC was a lousy, weak a%% conference. At least that was the opinion of many across this country who didn't have any respect for the conference. Now suddenly it was great?

Personally I always knew it was great. But strange to see fans who had cast aspersions on the PAC in the past suddenly say it was great.

I loved the PAC. Not only did we have traditional powerhouses in football and basketball, USC and UCLA, respectively, but we also had the top three teams in NCAA Div. I with the most national championships across all sports. Stanford, UCLA and USC.

Add to that academic juggernauts of Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA and even USC over the last four decades or so. And Washington was no slouch either. The conference had it all.

Personally I wish USC and UCLA never left the conference. The rest of the country didn't give the PAC any respect, but we knew what we had. And seeing the rivalries between USC and Stanford and USC and Berkeley go by the wayside sucks.

That all being said, when USC and UCLA left the conference, they still had 10 teams. They could have held. Oregon and Washington would have been the top bananas in athletics. Stanford and Cal would still hold in academics. One could argue that Oregon and Washington were the ones who actually played a major role in officially breaking up of the conference.

Unless, of course, people are willing to admit that maybe USC actually was a kingpin and more important to the conference than people gave it credit for. Because it sure seemed that without us and UCLA it began the process of crumbling. But it didn't have to continue.

The leadership of the PAC was horrible though. USC had been complaining about the conference for years and had even talked about going Independent. I can see why Oregon and Washington didn't want to stay with a poorly run conference either.

Odd though to care about two teams from another conference for which one has no skin in the game.
When TX and OK left the XII, that almost broke up the XII. As a USC fan I couldn't have cared less if they won or lost as they moved on to their new conference. I can see why their rivals in the XII would be happy seeing them lose, but I didn't care.

Odd to see a football fan from a non-PAC conference and someone with no skin in the games played by USC and UCLA want them to lose. Why care?

I'm not happy that USC left the conference though.

I know you prefer the traditional PAC still existing and USC and UCLA still being in it. I actually wish those two were in the XII or in the alternate universe since 2010, the PAC just deciding to become the first what we now call big 2 and swallowing up the XII instead of offering only half the conference as it existed at that time. Y'all would have kept all your traditional conference mates as well under that scenario.

But I suppose it has ended up fine for everyone except WSU and Or St and TCU, Cincy WVU etc all benefited down the road from that not happening.

I wonder if Deon gets tired of getting beat by 40 and not having his sons on the team. That with his health issues might be enough to say its time to relax.

  • LSU: The Tigers' vacancy has become the most prominent, overtaking Penn State as the top-ranked open job due to its national championship history, strong state recruiting dominance, and significant financial investment in the program. However, the hiring process is complicated by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry's public criticism of athletic director Scott Woodward and his decision to place the search in the hands of a board-appointed committee.
  • Penn State: The Nittany Lions' search is highly competitive, with the program's recent College Football Playoff semifinal appearance and a $45 million buyout for James Franklin underscoring its ambition to return to national prominence. The job remains a top-tier opportunity, though the candidate pool may be limited to a few elite names.
  • Florida: The Gators' opening is considered one of the highest-ceiling jobs, with a storied history and strong state recruiting advantages, but recent struggles in program stability and coaching turnover have created uncertainty. Lane Kiffin is a top target, but his potential move to LSU or staying at Ole Miss could shift the landscape.
  • Other Notable Open Jobs: Arkansas, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Kent State, UAB, and Oregon State
+/- possibly Auburn and Wisconsin?

I have to wonder if the future of FBS football in the NIL era is have a competent HC who is making less $ than current salaries and spend every last cent you can find in the couch cushions on NIL to buy a title (like Tech).

An observation from someone else on someone else's fan board: "This was destined to happen with NIL and now revenue sharing. The coach is no longer the team's King Cahuna. He's no longer solely responsible for creating the roster, roster management, booster donations, marketing in addition to all aspects of coaching. A lot of that responsibility now goes to general manager types running NIL, compensation and boosters.

Coaches will be finding loopholes to donate back to key players to get a team over the hump if they're not dong that already."

Meanwhile, in East Lansing...

Michigan State is 0-6 in Big Ten play and either they or Purdue will end up in last place in the conference.

Not sure they can afford to get out of the mess they have created:

"Jonathan Smith, the head football coach at Michigan State University, is under a seven-year, $52.85 million contract that runs through 2031, with his first-year salary set at $7.25 million, increasing by $100,000 annually to a maximum of $7.85 million in the final year. The contract includes a base pay of $6 million per year, supplemental pay starting at $1.25 million and rising by $100,000 each year, and performance bonuses for achievements such as winning a national championship ($400,000), a Big Ten championship ($200,000), or reaching the College Football Playoff ($150,000). Michigan State also provided a $10.75 million annual salary pool for assistant coaches, a significant increase from the previous $7.5 million budget under Mel Tucker. Smith's contract includes a buyout clause that starts at $7 million if he leaves before December 1, 2024, decreasing by $1 million per year until it reaches $1 million between December 2, 2028, and December 1, 2029, with no buyout required after December 2, 2029. The university paid Oregon State a $3 million buyout to release Smith from his prior contract.
  • The contract was initially released as a term sheet on November 28, 2023, and requires final approval by the Michigan State Board of Trustees, scheduled for December 15, 2023.
  • Smith's salary represents a substantial raise from his $4.85 million annual compensation at Oregon State, where he had a six-year contract through 2029.
  • The contract is 85% guaranteed, and if Michigan State fires Smith without cause, they must pay him 85% of his remaining annual salary, with any future head coaching salary offsetting this obligation.
  • Smith's contract includes additional benefits such as two cars, a country club membership, complimentary university sports tickets, 50 hours of private plane usage, and a $75,000 relocation allowance."

Meanwhile, version 2.0 of revenue sharing arrives.

Mike Norvell giving $4.5 million in salary back to Florida State in latest evolution of revenue share era

"A new trend is emerging as athletic departments shuffle finances to prepare for a new revenue-sharing model with its players: restructured contracts for their highest-paid coaches.

At least three major college coaches in the last 10 days have restructured their contracts or donated money to help their athletic departments, which will soon bleed millions in payments to players as part of the upcoming settlement of the House v. NCAA case. The pending settlement has placed major athletics on the hook for at least $20.5 million in annual payments to players, and creative accounting has been the rage as a July 1 deadline quickly approaches.
On Monday, Florida State joined the party when coach Mike Norvell agreed to a restructured contract that includes a $4.5 million contribution to launch the Vision of Excellence initiative, "a fundraising campaign that seeks to immediately raise Florida State athletics to new heights of comprehensive excellence by setting ambitious goals for the future of of the student-athlete experience, coaching, facilities and fan engagement."
Norvell last season earned a contract extension that boosted his annual salary to $9.9 million.

"It's a reallocation of resources," a power conference athletics director told CBS Sports, speaking generally on the new trend. "They're going to reallocate these resources in favor of the cap and revenue sharing. That's what's happening."

Simply put, it's a legal way for schools to shuffle cups and move money from one bucket to another. Coaches are not allowed to contribute directly to name, image, and likeness collectives, but in-house initiatives provide a different way to help players -- if not technically connected.

Embattled Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy agreed to a similar restructured contract Dec. 7, though financial terms were not released after a standoff where Gundy's options were to either take the new deal or get fired. LSU's Brian Kelly announced Friday that he would personally match up to $1 million in contributions to LSU's NIL fund with a gift to the Tiger Athletic Foundation's Excellence Fund.

The three coaches all suffered disappointing seasons (Florida State and Oklahoma State were winless in their conferences), which may have contributed to their impetus for goodwill to their universities."

This might be a good way to give Dave a paycut, increase our NIL, and fire Mack Rhodes this year.

It's worth discussing moving some money from the CDA contract to NIL money. In all pro sports while coaches are paid well the players make a lot more money than the coaches.

It isn't anymore. It's professional football with unrestricted free agency and no salary cap.

I'm almost to the point that I'll follow the Cowboys and the UFL.

I just don't get this and Penn State. Make the playoffs one year but then lose a few games and get fired. This doesn't happen in any of the professional sports leagues. It has to be a total collapse the next season for a team to fire the coach a year after making the playoffs.

Penn state might be there now after their 5th loss in a row with one more probably next week. And who knows after that. Will the team have any fight left for the last 3 or just give up? But Franklin has been gone for a few weeks so all the loses aren't on him at this point.

This isn't sustainable for the sport to have teams firing coaches one year after playoffs. The buyouts will get too cumbersome. And many coaches may not want to go to blue bloods if their job is going to be in danger because of one year of not making the playoffs (like was said about the LSU job recently). Coaches might be content staying at a lower level school that will excuse a year of missing the playoffs as long as it doesn't become a multi year thing of missing playoffs.

I can see Heupel end up at OSU if that happens. But who knows maybe the Big 2 will end up like the NFL. Hiring each others HC away or hiring each other's fired coaches as well.

Yup. It is like fans at Nebraska that ran off solich when he was actually winning. So he goes to Ohio and has a decent career there where expectations were not that high and they were ok with 8 or 9 wins every year, making the conference championship game, making a bowl every year and often winning it.

Meanwhile, Nebraska kept going through head coaches and is still trying to get to consistent wins every year.

They may feel that paying players is now the more important part for f a program than paying one coach millions to not be the coach and another one millions to be the coach. We have to see what the financial investment is there first though.
