Couple people on the premium board claim that the players are under the impression that he is coming here. I'm kind of wondering if he's not going to end up at another Jordan brand school since he had an NIL agreement with them.
which handles are claiming that?
My subscription just ended yesterday, and I don't remember. There are also people on there that know his dad. But reading between the lines, I think if he comes here it's possible that some specific donor or donors is footing the bill to get him here. I know his dad wanted him to go to BU originally, but it's hard to say no to Florida and the $3 million deal that they gave him.
thanks.
My general read:
- his UF stuff is hard to gauge - but ultimately it doesn't shout Guaranteed Upgrade
- In this NIL era, DJ is entering a 'contract year' - Ball Out or face shrinking NIL and NFL opportunities
- so he's got a lot to prove...
Will this Donor be cool with letting him truly battle it out? The answer to that is crucial.
I'd go so far as to say that if DJ doesn't want to have to compete for the starting job, then we need to try if at all possible to help the donor find another spend they're interested in...as challenge is often necessary for growth. We cannot afford to sidetrack the first quarter of the season because we were over-committed to starting the wrong guy.
That said, Spav & DJ might be an absolute dream combination. Honestly, either way we need Big Money Booster engagement, like really really need it. So at the very least, all the BMBs will see that the Uni wants to engage with them on their terms.
The other obvious massive benefit would be getting a great legacy storyline going (especially with London Smith as a fellow legacy Bear). Such a narrative would take any major rebound to another level in garnering fan enthusiasm and the interest of sports media.
All that said, I still believe our QB room is already solid. So as things stand, I'd be happy for us to sign DJ, but I won't be heartbroken if he lands elsewhere.
