Texas regents scheduled to approve $175-million expansion of Royal-Memorial Stadium

New construction could begin in 2019 with a projected final completion date in July 2021

Posted August 6th, 2018

Texas officials are expected to take a major step forward on the path to renovating Royal-Memorial Stadium this week.

The UT System Board of Regents are scheduled to hear a presentation from president Gregory L. Fenves and athletic director Chris Del Conte during Thursday's meeting. The south end zone expansion project is scheduled to cost approximately $175 million, according to the agenda book posted on Monday.

The school will raise $125 million of the total cost through gifts, according to UT documents. Pledges totaling $30 million have already been obtained. The final $50 million will be financed through debt markets and repaid from "premium seating and ticket sales."

No taxpayer dollars and no tuition money will be used in the project, according to the school.

If regents approve the project, construction could begin in 2019 with a projected completion date in July 2021.

University officials declined comment on Monday about the stadium expansion project. Typically, they do not speak about matters going before the regents.

McLane cost about $225 million total? Or was it closer to $300 million?

It's less then the scandal.

Cotton Bowl's Heart of Dallas football game lives as ESPN gets some help from hotels

The Dallas City Council is poised to pump money back into the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The council earlier this year rejected paying $800,000 in grants over two years to ESPN for the annual December college football game at the Cotton Bowl. But now, city officials have returned with a new proposal that slashes half a million dollars from the cost to taxpayers.

The plan was met with a mixed response some still don't see the value in paying for the game but won approval Monday from council's Quality of Life and Arts & Culture Committee.

Council member Mark Clayton, who opposed the $800,000 deal, lauded city officials and VisitDallas for coming back with the new agreement.

"At the worst, over the long haul, we show Dallas off during a slow time, we kick the cobwebs off the Cotton Bowl and in an average year, we make money," he said. "It's a win for everybody."

The future of the only college bowl game to take place inside Dallas city limits is up in the air.

The council already rejected the sports network's first ask of $800,000 to keep the sparsely-attended Heart of Dallas bowl at the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma State Chance Cook announced on Wednesday that he was leaving the team. He plans to complete his degree in the spring of 2019, then transfer to another school, where he would have two years of eligibility remaining.

Cook, a third-year junior, had become a regular contributor on special teams, where he was known for his hard-hitting style. He was expected to be high on the depth chart at safety this fall.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT THIS IS THE BIGGEST NEWS AT K-STATE THIS WEEK

K-State football fans will get to eat Chick-fil-A at home games this season

MANHATTAN

Like eating at Chick-fil-A? Like watching Kansas State football? If you answered yes to both questions then you're in luck.

Starting this season, K-State football fans will be able to purchase chicken from the popular fast-food restaurant at every home game.

Chick-fil-A stands will be located in the South End Zone Pavilion of Bill Snyder Family Stadium, as well as the View Level concourse. The Chick-fil-A stands won't have quite as diverse a menu as the regular restaurant, but it will be their pleasure to offer fans Chick-fil-A sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks.

Manhattan Chick-fil-A owner David Hamel, a former K-State football player, will spearhead the food service on game days.

WELL THE CHICK-FIL-LA DEAL AT K-STATE WAS THE BIGGEST NEWS IN MANHATTIN UNTIL THIS

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/24332665/bill-snyder-kansas-state-wildcats-head-coach-agrees-new-five-year-contract?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Bill Snyder agrees to new five-year deal with Kansas State
3:54 PM CT

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has agreed to a new five-year deal with the Wildcats that will go through the 2022 season, the school announced Thursday. University officials approved the deal Wednesday.

The 78-year-old Snyder will make $3.45 million this year and will receive $300,000 increases in 2019 and 2020. The figures in the final two years of the deal will be renegotiated later.

Snyder previously had a contract that rolled over every year. According to USA Today, he made just over $3.2 million in 2017.

Snyder has 210 career victories, third-most among active FBS coaches behind Notre Dame's Brian Kelly (219) and Alabama's Nick Saban (218).

"It has been a pleasure watching our football program up close over the past year and seeing one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football continue to positively impact student-athletes while also producing winning seasons on a yearly basis," athletic director Gene Taylor said in a statement. "With this new contract, we felt that it was important to recognize his commitment to our football program, and we look forward to his continued leadership."

Snyder, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015, is entering his 27th season at Kansas State. He was diagnosed with throat cancer last offseason but recovered from chemotherapy treatments to coach the Wildcats in 2017.

Kansas State won five of its final six games last year to finish 8-5. Last month, the Wildcats were picked to finish sixth in the preseason Big 12 poll.

"We have continued to make daily improvement as a football program, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue and will do so as long as I am healthy and feel that I am having a positive impact on our university, community and football program and the young men that are involved," Snyder said in the statement.

WVU: Wesco making move to fullback
Sean Manning, The Dominion PostAugust 11, 2018 8:32 am

MORGANTOWN Trevon Wesco had dreams of playing major Division I football while he was at Musselman High seven years ago.

He just never thought he'd be playing fullback at a Power Five school.Trevon Wesco

Wesco, West Virginia's senior tight end, will dabble in the backfield as well as along the line of scrimmage,
depending on where the coaches need him. He came through the junior college ranks at Lackawanna (Pa.) as a tight end before joining the Mountaineers.

The last years in Morgantown, Wesco was strictly a tight end, but he is also playing a similar role to what Elijah Wellman did the last few seasons as a lead blocker out of the backfield.

OK-State: Blake Barron tears ACL and MCL in practice injury

The freshman linebacker will miss his entire first season.

By micah_allen@micahallen18 Aug 10, 2018, 6:12pm CDT

It was first reported yesterday by Pistol Firing's Kyle Boone that Blake Barron had suffered a freak injury at practice. Sources told PFB that Barron suffered the injury on Wednesday during practice and would undergo an MRI Friday morning to assess the damage.

Boone is now reporting that results of the MRI are a torn ACL and MCL. Sources told Boone that Barron will wait three weeks for surgery for the swelling to go down. He will likely sit this season and try to redshirt.
This is not the news Oklahoma State fans (or Barron) wanted. But we're wishing him the best in his recovery and hope he comes back better than ever.

We'll continue to up this story as we know more.

Following its first scrimmage, Texas adds three defenders to its injury report
Posted August 12th, 2018

The Texas defense took home the win at the football team's first scrimmage on Saturday, but that victory came at a price.

On Sunday, Texas announced that three defensive players suffered injuries in Saturday's scrimmage. Senior cornerback Davante Davis (hamstring) and freshman linebacker Ayodele Adeoye (knee) were added to the injury report. Freshman DeMarvion Overshown, a defensive back who recently moved to linebacker in the wake of Jeffrey McCulloch's pectoral injury, also hurt his knee.

The severity of these injuries was not revealed by Texas. A press release stated the players are "currently being treated and evaluated."

Davis has started 14 times in his collegiate career. Adeoye is a four-star recruit who went through spring drills with the Longhorns. Overshown is a four-star member of Texas' 2018 recruiting class.

Not over yet for Austin: Texas Tech receiver fights back from two years lost to injuries

Zach Austin can't pin down precisely when he was told he'd been approved to return for a sixth year of college football.

The Texas Tech inside receiver, having lost the past two seasons to knee injuries, spent more time this off-season wondering if he should return in the first place and if the Red Raiders would benefit by his presence.

If he was going to come back, he wanted to be fully healthy and not burden his teammates in any way, shape or form.

Austin talked it out with his family, Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury and his long-time best friend, Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.

"I had a talk with coach Kingsbury about stuff like that," Austin said this month. "I basically asked him, 'Just be a hundred percent honest with me. If you really want me, I'm not going to say no. I'm going to come back a hundred percent and I'll try.'

"And he said, 'Yeah, we really love having you around,' and stuff, and that kind of pushed me in that direction, too. So it definitely helped."

The Red Raiders can certainly use Austin, considering they lost five receivers from last year's two-deep: Cameron Batson, Dylan Cantrell and Derrick Willies were seniors, Keke Coutee left early for the NFL draft and Quan Shorts was dismissed from the team.

So one aspect of the receiver-corps reconstruction involves Ja'Deion High and Austin, both sixth-year seniors with modest career numbers, both inside receivers who have been team players while dealing with injuries that cost them full seasons. Even if High and Austin don't put up big numbers, Kingsbury has said repeatedly this off-season he values what they can bring to a receiver room full of young candidates.

West Virginia freshmen O'Laughlin, Spalding out for season

MORGANTOWN West Virginia freshman tight end Mike O'Laughlin has undergone surgery after suffering a torn ACL, likely sidelining him for the year, sources told The Dominion Post.

A 6-foot-5, three-star prospect from Oak Park, Ill., O'Laughlin was back home this week for the surgery and plans to return to Morgantown by the start of fall semester classes Wednesday. Coaches were high on O'Laughlin's chances of seeing playing time this season.

He committed to WVU in April 2017 and signed last December despite a late offer from Ohio State. He compiled 108 catches for 1,895 yards and 19 touchdowns over his final two high school seasons and was among two tight ends WVU brought in for the 2018 class, along with T.J. Banks.

Sophomore Jovani Haskins figures to be the field-stretching tight end this fall with 274-pound senior Trevon Wesco projected as an H-back blocker. West Virginia also has an intriguing prospect in 6-foot-6 Jesse Beal, who's giving college football a try at age 28 after minor-league baseball stints with the Orioles and Phillies.

Head coach Dana Holgorsen, while subsequently addressing O'Laughlin's injury at Sunday's practice, also announced that freshman receiver Dillon Spalding underwent ankle surgery and is out for the year.

"Those two guys, we didn't know what we were getting with them. They are good kids," Holgorsen said. "Other than that, we're in pretty good shape."

FORMER WEST VIRGINIA QUARTERBACK CHRIS CHUGUNOV TO TRANSFER TO OHIO STATE, PER REPORT

Former West Virginia quarterback Chris Chugunov is transferring to Ohio State and plans to join the football team, according to a report by Allan Taylor of The Dominion Post.

Chugunov will be on scholarship for the Buckeyes, according to Taylor's report.

An Ohio State spokesperson said the Buckeyes "don't have any additions to the roster at this time," and Ohio State is currently at its full allotment of 85 scholarships for the 2018 season. Taylor, however, reported that Chugunov has not yet enrolled, which could mean that Chugunov will join the team for the 2019 season.

Chugunov appeared in five games for the Mountaineers last season, starting the final two games of the year, completing 43 of 90 passing attempts for 536 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

He announced his intention to transfer from West Virginia in March, and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said this spring that Chugunov was on track to graduate in May.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound quarterback from Skillman, New Jersey, would be a redshirt junior this season and has two remaining years of eligibility.

Two Longhorns announce transfer from Texas

Two Longhorns have announced their intention to transfer ahead of the 2018 football season. The University of Texas media relations department confirmed Tuesday that John Bonney and Eric Cuffee have told the Texas staff of their intention to transfer from the program after spending the last several seasons on the 40 Acres.

Bonney, a native of Houston, Texas, played in 37 career games and made 15 starts for the Longhorns. He graduated in December with a degree in Corporate Communications. Cuffee, a native of Waco, Texas, was entering his third season with the program.

Statement from John Bonney:

"I would like to thank The University of Texas for giving me the opportunity to graduate and earn a bachelor's degree. I'd like to thank Mack Brown for offering me a scholarship to be a student-athlete at such a great institution and Coach Charlie Strongand Vance Beford for taking me in and teaching me the game, as well as Coach Tom Herman, Craig Naivar and Yancy McKnight for helping me grow and develop not only as a football player but as a young man. I'd also like to thank our great fans for supporting us through good times and bad. I will cherish the relationships made with my teammates and the memories we shared on and off the field. I will forever be a Longhorn. God bless. Hook 'Em!"

Statement from Eric Cuffee:

"It was a long and well-thought out decision with family and friends, but I have decided to transfer from The University of Texas to give myself a better opportunity to reach my dreams and aspirations in life. I want to thank Jason Washington, Coach Herman and Coach McKnight for giving me the tools, as well as critiquing me into becoming a better man on and off the field. I also want to thank all of my teammates for supporting me. I'm going to miss them, but I'll be rooting for them as I go to compete at Trinity Valley Community College for the next four months to eventually lead me to my next home."

Texas Tech University System Chancellor Robert L. Duncan abruptly announced on Monday he would be retiring at the end of August. According to KFYO's sources, the regents voted 5-4 in a vote of 'no confidence' concerning Chancellor Duncan. Those voting to change leadership were regents Rick Francis, John Steinmetz, Mickey Long, Christopher Huckabee, and Ronnie Hammonds.
In addition, these same sources also told KFYO that Texas Tech regents were lobbied by the office of John Sharp, Texas A&M University System Chancellor, and by some inside the office of Governor Greg Abbott.

Two four-star Texas freshmen ruled out for at least 2018 opener

A couple of members of Texas' 2018 recruiting class who were supposed to contribute this season for the Longhorns this season won't be able to do so immediately.

The UT football program confirmed Wednesday that linebacker Ayodele Adeoyeand linebacker/safety DeMarvion Overshown will be sidelined for at least the Sept. 1 opener against Maryland. Both players are dealing with knee injuries they sustained during a scrimmage this past Saturday.

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports.com, Adeoyo is dealing with an MCL sprain that could keep the true freshman out for up to six weeks. Such a timeline, at least on the long end, means that Adeoyo could potentially miss games against Tulsa (Sept. 8), USC (Sept. 15) and TCU (Sept. 22) as well as the opener.

While there is no timeframe yet for Overshown's return, the school stated in its release that both players are expected to "miss an extended period of time."

Both Adeoyo and Overshown were four-star signees this past recruiting cycle. Per 247Sports.com's composite board, only three players in the Longhorns' most recent classwere rated higher than Overshown a pair of five-star safeties in Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster as well as four-star cornerback Jalen Green.

Size matters: The building boom continues for bigger, better Big 12 athletic facilities

From Baylor to Texas to West Virginia, upgrading athletic facilities has been all the rage. And Texas A&M, other state schools are building, too.

Posted August 18th, 2018

Jimbo Fisher inherited a palace of a football stadium when he accepted the job at Texas A&M.

The Aggies are three years removed from finishing a $500 million renovation of Kyle Field, giving them the largest stadium in the Southeastern Conference and one of the biggest in the country.

But in the big business of college football, building booms never end. So a beautiful palace never can be enough. It's like a constant loop of reno shows on HGTV. Other sports besides football need spiffier spaces, too. Recruits, the lifeblood of a program, want gaudy. Donors demand what the rival is showing off.

"When you build facilities, the worst thing you can do is stop," Fisher said last week. His school's most recent projects include new stadiums for softball and track at a cost of $69 million.

Schools can pay for the construction through a mixture of money raised from bonds and/or private donations. And schools in Power 5 leagues are getting lucrative annual payments from their conferences. Each Big 12 school received $36.5 million in conference revenue for the recently completed athletic year. That payment doesn't include what each school collects in its third-tier rights.

Sports then generate big money. For example, Texas generated nearly $215 million in athletic revenue for last year. That led the country.

Texas hit pause on major football construction projects almost a decade ago. But earlier this month, the UT board of regents approved a $175 million refurbishment project for Royal-Memorial Stadium. Once finished, the near century-old venue will feature another stadium club that will stretch the length of the south end zone. It'll be similar to the posh field-level club the Dallas Cowboys have at AT&T Stadium.

Since UT last did major football construction, A&M has re-imagined Kyle Field, Baylor built $266 million McLane Stadium on the banks of the Brazos River, TCU gutted, then re-did art deco Amon Carter at a cost of $164 million and Houston completed TDECU Stadium for $128 million.

And more is planned around the state. And in the Big 12. And across the country.

"Bigger, better, shinier. I think that's the way it's going," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said in describing the construction trends. "Anything that you can attract recruits with, we're going to be wanting it and I think you're going to see that continued to move in that direction. Any way you can differentiate yourself from a facilities standpoint would be a positive for your program."
Among Big 12 schools:

  • Baylor is contemplating either building a new basketball arena or renovating the Ferrell Center at a cost of up to $80 million. New team areas for volleyball and the acrobatic and tumbling squads also are being considered.
  • Football coach Matt Rhule would love a new complex devoted to just football.
"I think if I could do one thing for us in terms of our facilities, it would be a football-only building," Rhule said. "And that's two-fold, having our own weight room, having our own training room would be ideal. My wish list everybody would have their own facility, which is what I had at Temple, what we had at Penn State.
"Just like the weight room, the training room, meeting rooms, having it all self-contained. That would be mine if I could pick."
    • Iowa State's regents recently approved projects that will cost up to $80 million that will include expansion of the football stadium's north end zone entrance and team complex along with a new academic and sports nutrition center.
    • Kansas is in the midst of a $300 million building revival that will include new stadiums for softball, soccer, tennis and track. The football stadium will feature premium seating in both end zones and a $3 million refurbishment of the team's complex, plus a new indoor practice area.
    • Kansas State is building a new soccer stadium and refurbishing its baseball complex. Total cost: $15 million.
    • Oklahoma is finishing the last touches of its $160 million south end zone project at its football stadium. A new video board in the north end zone will be ready for the season home opener. The athletic department also is dedicating its $7 million Griffin Family Performance Center for basketball next weekend.

The school's regents also decided to build a new $22 million softball stadium.
Oklahoma State is in the midst of building a new $60 million baseball stadium and will open a soccer arena this fall.

WVU Postpones Football Fan Day Over Hand, Foot And Mouth Disease Outbreak

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (KDKA) West Virginia University has postponed its Fan Day with the Mountaineer football team over an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease.

Fan Day was initially scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The WVU Athletic Department says five cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been identified within the school's football program.

Because the disease is highly contagious, the Athletic Department says it is in "the best interest of the general public to postpone the event."

The WVU medical staff is continuing to monitor the situation.

A new date for Fan Day has not been announced at this time.

In July, more than a dozen people were infected with hand, foot and mouth disease at a summer school program for Pittsburgh Public Schools in Mount Oliver.

At least 10 students and six staff members caught the disease. The building was disinfected and the district says it's confident the building is now safe for students.

Very odd that KU's stadium is called David Booth Memorial when David Booth is very much alive.
