He is correct here. There is a shortage of talented and MOTIVATED engineers, planners, and other technical skills in the US. The US colleges are teaching philosophy not project development and delivery. The schools do not want to teach that rather policy. Use the Student Loan forgiveness for that area of expertise, we need to incentivize these areas or the US will be relying on Chinese and Indianian trained engineers.
There's a shortage of talent bc the pay isnt there compared to being a finance bro or attorney and Elon can bring in Indians on H1B and pay them 80k to do that job. If these high level tech jobs paid what they should you would see a lot of kids in college going to these fields. Elon and silicon valley want the cheap Indians and not the expensive Americans.

True to an extent.

After 34 years of working with engineers IMO, there is a reason that there is an issue with industrial espionage. The creativity to look and see a better way or even to ask questions with risk is not part of the thought process (let's face it, for every 10 ideas, you may get 3 that are worth exploring in more detail). You have to question and push ideas for innovation, we won't get it importing. When at an Engineering firm about 15 years ago, the rule was competent engineers were a dime a dozen, engineers that can communicate and have a vision worth their weight in gold.

My bigger fear is that we are so ingrained with cost and low bid, we are starting to do the same. Low bid is not the best way to build a bridge! Too many CFOs becoming CEOs, we now work to Wall St metrics, not performance. Depressing. No fun in that...
you are correct about WS metrics. That is one of the reasons I left the corporate rat race. Got tired of sitting on earnings calls and doing things in the business that were tailored to analysts as opposed to doing what is right for the business.
Even worse when it involves either building or operations. Those metrics can be dangerous, right now Boeing, Southwest, and many construction projects are feeling the results.
Was going to say this is where Boeing went wrong. They switched from being led by engineers with a focus on quality to being led by finance guys with a focus on cutting costs and hitting earnings goals.

That sounds like a version of what has happened to just about all of America over the past several decades

Vivek's long explanation for why America is not producing enough engineers... long story short he says American culture prioritizes the wrong things culturally

We need more legal immigration via the H1B Visas. We simple to not have the technical proficiency, on balance to fill all the engineering, science jobs. However, we do need to change the laws that is a person is educated in the US with H1 Visa, then we need to let them stay here, work, contribute , start companies, hire Americans with good jobs instead of of the "brain drain " that occurs when we send them back. That is down right dumb on our part. Did see the MAGA crowd getting a bit unhinged when Vivek came out with his twaddle today that took a shot at our culture. He needs to stick to his knitting and cut out govt fat and redundantcy. Given the China situation, I think letting Chinese students to study here is a big problem.

The DOGE recommendations need to be vetted and backed by data, not opinion. Musk will take care of Musk, last week's instructing Congress how to vote was troubling.

Any recommendations needs to be vetted and backed by data. It cannot be opinion or perception based. This is not a short term activity, GAO has been working on this for years. DOGE should use GAO as it's analysis branch.

Utter waste of time and resources. Those jobs are going to be outsourced to AI in the very near future
