California invalidated any case to seek federal help:
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/13/newsom-california-democrats-trump-legal-fights-00197784

SACRAMENTO, California California Democrats have reached a $50 million agreement to shore up state and local legal defenses against the incoming Trump administration just a week ahead of the president-elect's inauguration. Half the money would go to fending off any mass deportation plan the new president might enact early in his administration.

The move the first of its kind in the nation that positions California to lead a second term resistance against Donald Trump comes as Republicans bash state Democratic leaders for focusing on a highly partisan issue even as the southern part of the state suffers from historically devastating fires.

There are many other examples, most not famous or widely known outside a narrow circle. That said, HB has a valid point: far too many people, especially in govt or woke corporations, are hired because of the identity politics checkboxes and quickly prove themselves unqualified. One only need look at everyone associated with the Biden Administration to see a plethora of examples. I cannot name a single competent member.

Another observation: DEI is a recent phenomenon so we should be careful using it as a metric. Several of my examples had illustrious careers and died before anyone came up with that hare brained idea (I deliberately omitted many 19th century examples). One could argue that it's just unconstitutional affirmative action under a different label and that has been around for over 50 years. The same still applies.

Lastly, it is curious that most examples are in entertainment (sports, film, & music). I'm unsure why but I think it might be due to a huge abundance of exceptional talent and the earlier breakdown of barriers for minorities to achieve greatness.

You're defending racism. That's the tribe you've chosen. It's not even a real tribe, it's not like racists in the USA all get along or vote the same. The tribe could just be America, but instead "yeah you might think racism is racist, but it has a good point." Disgusting.

No DEI is racism. That's what's disgusting. But everything the fascists do is disgusting: killing babies, poisoning or mutilating children, giving privileges, criminals to persecuting Christians & Jews, supporting terrorists, misusing taxpayers' money, growing government, abusing government authority, covering up Leftist crimes, stealing elections, excessive regulations, etc. The least seems unending.

Not unreasonable. It is not a natural disaster. California has lots of money, it should bail out its own citizens.

Has plenty of woke millionaires who supported Newsom and the rest of the fascists. Let them bail out their neighbors. They advocate socialism so let them prove they really mean it: share your wealth with the millions of Californians suffering from your political mistakes. Same is true for the millionaires & billionaires in Silicon Valley.

That will be interesting in FL, rebuilding in the hurricane area has caused issues. Requiring to elevate homes is causing people to lose their homes because they can't afford it. Will the earthquake and new fire regs that are bound to come do the same?
It is not all about the left either, Conservatives don't like taxes being used to rebuild on what they consider bad locations. Those are the ones causing the issue here. I can see both sides...

It should be possible to come up with sensible solutions, if both sides are serious about it. The fascists rarely demonstrate a willingness to be sensible about anything.

I know something about that issue. My home town is in a part of Texas known as "Flash Flood Alley." We have had multiple major floods over the years, most notably in 1972, 1997, & 2003. I remember the last one vividly because I witnessed it first hand, walking down the street from my parents' house repeatedly for three days to watch the water flowing by. After these floods, local leaders took positive steps to mitigate: dams on dry creeks to limit or prevent flooding, refusing to grant building permits in the flood plain, etc.

San Antonio once had decent leadership. After a major flood downtown in the first half if the 20th century they built dams and a huge pipeline so that flood waters would bypass the dense population of downtown. The result is the Alamo, River Walk, etc are protected.

Thank God for the electoral college

Imagine being ruled by just LA, Chicagoland, and the New York City metro area
Electoral College was a stroke of genius. We're supposed to be the United States of America, not the United People of America. We're supposed to be a union of sovereign states, not one big nation.

You are talking in part about the difference between a republic and a democracy. The Founders wanted the former & feared the latter. Democracy is mob rule and under it no one is really secure. A lynch mob is a good example of democracy in action, literally.

Anyone who doubts this only needs to read Federalist #10.

I saw something on facebook but can't find any news story on it about many of the houses that have burned have been famous houses "in" movies and tv shows.

Not that it makes any difference on whether it was a house that regular people lived in or was famous as the house that _______ character lived in. Someone is still without a home due to failed policies.

These elites thought they were immune from his nonsensical policies.

You shouldn't be so certain. While the fire burned a lot of houses, there are still a ton of wealthy libs in L.A. who are untouched. What are they going to do, admit the failure of their leaders, or blame climate change and move on?

Those directly affected by the fire might have had their lives shaken up enough to take a new direction, but we will see.

I also just don't hate the libs (or women) enough to be blaming women for this. The fire chief seems to have it together. It is the outsourcing of the reservoir cover repair, and environmental roadblocks to clearing dead brush that were the 2 big contributors.

Lastly, this is primarily a natural disaster. The response was inadequate, but nobody knows how much of a difference the proper response would have made. There were many homes lost in areas with water pressure, and in many areas, it was homeowners who had let brush pile up.

Newsom is done. But not for the reasons many have said here.

Term limits.

He cannot run again in 2026.

He would have to run for House (unlikely), senate or president. And I'm sure in whichever he did his opponent will bring this up a ton. However, most of the cali voters will have forgotten about this and his role by the time that election happens because it did not directly involve them, and that it is a year plus away, depending on which office he would be running for.

Gavin won't settle for a house seat and the senate is beyond his reach.

Suspect he disappears much like Beto has.

I agree. House seems like a downgrade from governor so it is Senate, President or cabinet spot.

So basically I think he is done.
