Market sets the price, usually if materials go up it is because of competing projects or big projects. I remember when the Three Gorges Dam drove up the cost of cement. Buy America drove up costs. Tarriffs drive up costs.

DEI? Really? You think that is a cost center?

A lot of road cost has to do with the State Constitution, some States only have to give fair vaule to take land for eminent demand. In FL, we pay total cost, including business damages for the life of the business. That drives up costs even for corner clips. FL is a big property rights state only 2 things require a full 12 man jury in FL, capital murder and eminent domain. They take it seriously.

FL is right to work State, no union.

For a typical $100 million highway project, approximately $15-20 million in direct wages flow into the local economy. Beyond direct employment, the construction phase drives demand for local services.

The US does overspend compared to other Nations, mostly due to DOT understaffing and a lack of private sector competition. DOT's used to be better staffed.
