Team Speed: Looking At 2018 And Beyond
A few questions have popped up on the boards lately so I reached out to some people to answer them. I could see a few of these changing over time, but these are the answers currently.
SPEED
The question of who is the fastest Bear on campus and upcoming recruiting classes was asked and here were the answers along with my opinion after seeing the players in person. I'm dividing up the players into two groups and some players could be in both groups or just one. The first group will be the players with speed to burn once they get going on the field. The second group will be the players with exceptional burst and hit their top end quickly, but not quite the turnover others possess.
Speed To Burn
Chris Platt recorded the fastest time ever during the Oklahoma game on special teams. Baylor has started recording speed with GPS devices mounted under the shoulder pads of players. Until someone demonstrates a faster speed than Platt, he remains here.
Denzel Mims is also extremely fast on the field. His lengthy stride covers a ton of ground, but he needs a step or two to get going.
Kalon Barnes is another with speed to burn, but doesn't have a blazing 40 time. This will improve over time as he concentrates on football.
Grayland Arnold is another with a ton of speed in a position it is needed.
Raleigh Texada has track speed and cornerback speed.
Jackson Gleeson is blazing fast. He didn't post 2018 track times while concentrating on football and recovering from a hamstring issue. He could be the fastest once he's in a game.
Josh Fleeks is a burner and his performances for Cedar Hill as the anchor for sprint relays says it all.
Trestan Ebner outran West Virginia, TCU, and everyone else.
Jameson Houston has had speed all over while adjusting to college physicality.
JT Woods qualified for the state meet in the 100 and 110 hurdles. He has shown great closing speed in the Spring.
Tyquan Thornton is rumored to be the fastest freshman, but the rest will test this rumor soon.
Jared Atkinson has been a speed guy since bursting onto the scene in high school. Muscle injuries have limited him, but don't sleep on his ability.
Craig Williams can run and cut and burst and do it all.
Immediate Speed
Trestan Ebner, Grayland Arnold, Raleigh Texada, Josh Fleeks, JT Woods, and Craig Williams from the list above are players with speed anytime they want it.
Jalen Hurd doesn't need build up in his 6-4 frame. Speed is just there and sudden.
Gavin Holmes also has speed upon his first step.
Blake Lynch hits top speed quickly and will be needed in his move to safety.
JaMycal Hasty was almost included in the top list as well.
Marques Jones showed his speed and burst at the Spring game.
Xavier Jones has great suddeness for a defensive end which allows him to attack quarterbacks.
BJ Thompson won a dunk contest and can get after a quarterback due to his explosive first step.
Trevor White uses his stature to his advantage in getting off the line quick.
Tony Nicholson might not be able to be tackled in a phone booth which makes him such an effective punt returner.
Jairon McVea has a great 40 speed, but can improve on his closing.
2019 Commits
Qualan Jones ran 4.48 laser at 219 pounds.
Jaylen Ellis ran 4.50 laser on a slow turf inside The Star.
Matt Jones ran a 4.20 shuttle at 227 pounds.
Brandon White ran 10.67 in the 100 at 6-1.
Will Williams ran a 4.54 at 6-2 205 at camp and will play linebacker.
2019 Recruits
King Doerue is sudden and if he teams with Jones, defenders will not want a part of them late in games.
Genson Hooper is one of the more underappreciated fast guys in the state.
Trace Ford has such explosion from the edge. Teaming with Jones could be a coup for Baylor.
Tyler Owens went 4.31 at Baylor camp.
Peyton Powell is a freaky speed athlete at either wide receiver or cornerback.
2020 Offers
Quin Bright has elite speed and quickness.
Seth McGowan has sudden speed and power.
Stacy Sneed is similar to McGowan.
Jaden Hullaby can play safety as well as running back.
Trent Pullen has one of the quicker pops for an offensive lineman. Center could be his best positon due to it.
Allen Horace has explosion needed at DE.
Josh White is just sudden and attacking.
Lorando Johnson has elite skills and quickness.
Korie Black can run, just like everyone else in his family.
To clarify, these are the offers I have seen in person and not indicative of those I have not seen. I attend several camps throughout the year and all of these have impressed. I continue to look for the others.
