FIFY

That's a whole other debate for another day.

Taking the best player available doesn't mean you took the right player.
Ok so who was the right player?

I said earlier, needed a DBack, should have been Arnette. Why don't you think we need a solid Secondary addition?

I like Diggs better than Arnett

I liked Fulton over Arnett.

Arnett would have been a major reach at 17 and was a reach where is was drafted in round 1

I'm not pitching a fit over it, we're used to it.

And to be fair if CJ Henderson were on the board I would possibly be more inclined to agree with you.

The international guy the NFL gave us....He will be an extra guy that gets to be on the practice squad so we will have 13 guys instead of 12.

Very raw is an understatement...looks like he does have good feet though...

I still can't believe we took offense over all the defensive studs available.
Just one week after he was hired as the Cowboys' new head coach, McCarthy sat down with reporters and covered a bevy of topics. Among them was a question about how he'd go about finding players to fit his preferred defensive scheme though the answer revealed plenty about his team building philosophy as a whole.

"I think if you have a system of defense where you need a certain player to fit your scheme, you're limiting your personnel department," McCarthy said at the time. "We know what a Dallas Cowboys football player looks like. The length, the athletic ability. Let's get as many good football players as we possibly can."

Fast forward a few months, and that mantra seems to have come to fruition. Throughout the 2020 NFL Draft this past weekend, the Cowboys were lucky enough to have several surprisingly talented players fall to their draft slot. Without fail, they turned in their cards for the highest-rated player available from CeeDee Lamb in the first round, to Bradlee Anae all the way in the fifth.

If you think that sounds like a bit of a shift in philosophy, you're not alone. To hear it from executive vice president of player personnel Will McClay, it was one of the first things he noted about working with McCarthy.

"When he joined the organization and we started talking about players, one of the first things out of his mouth was 'Players over system,'" McClay said on Tuesday. "Well, that rung a bell with me right away."

By all indications, McCarthy and his coaching staff were influential in that process, perhaps ironically by not being too influential. Now, the Cowboys have a talented crop of newcomers they can fit their scheme around.

"Our job is to look at all of these things, and then when those things match, some of the traits that they're looking for, we say this is what the guy can do," McClay said. "Now it's up to, from a schematic standpoint, to say the value of those traits, what's most important and then trying to fit them into the team so that the team can develop a scheme."

The Cowboys have waived linebacker Chris Covington and defensive back D.J. White.
Covington, a sixth-round draft pick in 2018, spent most of last season on the practice squad. He appeared in three games in December with Leighton Vander Esch (neck) injured.
White spent the final two months of last season on the practice squad. He was signed to the Reserve/Future list after the season.

  • Name: Neville Gallimore
  • Position: DT
  • College: Oklahoma
  • Height: 6-2
  • Weight: 304
  • Season: Rookie

Overview:
Gallimore is an energetic nose tackle with an explosive short-area quickness and an array of athletic rush moves. The Oklahoma product finished his collegiate career with 67 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. The 6-foot-2, 304-pounder is an active player at the point of attack. As a one-gap penetrator in a movement-based defender, Gallimore relied on his first-step quickness and agility to shoot gaps at the line. He uses a little wiggle and burst to slip past blockers on the way to the ball carrier. If the runner escapes the initial penetration or runs away from Gallimore, the speedy defender flashes enough speed and quickness to run him down from the backside. No.90 will adjust his pursuit angle while chasing from behind to meet runners at the line of scrimmage, exhibiting outstanding awareness and a non-stop motor.

As a pass rusher, Gallimore flashes disruptive potential on the inside. He combines outstanding athleticism, balance, and body control with an explosive 1st-step and basketball-like footwork to blow past blockers at the line. Gallimore's impressive pass rush arsenal includes quick arm-over and a Hakeem Olajuwon "Dream Shake" (spin move) that befuddles blockers. With No.90 also showing excellent snap count anticipation and first-step quickness, he has a number of moves and counters at his disposal to disrupt the quarterback's timing and rhythm.

From a critical standpoint, Gallimore's activity doesn't consistently lea to production. Despite an impressive set of athletic tools, his disruptive numbers (17 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in 46 career games) don't match his talent. Some of that can be attributed to the Sooners' game but a lot of his shortcomings are the result of his limited exposure to advanced techniques (grew up and played high school football in Canada). Galore also needs to play with better pad level to reduce some of the pin-balling that results in him falling to the ground. If he can learn how to use his hands, maintain his leverage, and properly sequence his moves, he could be a handful for interior blockers ill-equipped to deal with his quickness, athleticism, and energy.

Strengths
  • Exceptional get-off and short-area quickness
  • Energy player with a high-revving motor and a relentless competitive spirit
  • Flashes the ability to turn strength into power
  • Active hands and an array of athletic pass rush moves, including a nasty spin move

Weaknesses:
  • Activity doesn't lead to significant production
  • High-leverage player with questionable balance and body control
  • Still mastering the nuances of the game after a late introduction to the sport

What are scouts saying?
"Gallimore is a twitchy interior defender with an explosive first-step and outstanding short-area quickness. He has active hands and has a little wiggle as a pass rusher. He reminds me of a Grady Jarrett as a power-player with some pass-rush ability. He's still a work in progress but he's an intriguing prospect who just scratching the surface on his potential."

How does he fit in with the Cowboys?
Gallimore is an athletic interior defender with a combination of strength, power, and quickness that could enable him to emerge as a disruptive playmaker for the Cowboys. He will initially start out as a rotational player behind Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe but he should add some energy and athleticism to the unit when he is on the field. As an active one-gap penetrator with a high-revving motor and an array of athletic rush moves, Gallimore could become a key contributor as a spot player for the Cowboys during his rookie season.

The Cowboys have a history of having undrafted free agents that make the team and many who have been significant contributors. Of the 15 undrafted free agents reported to have agreed to terms with the Cowboys since the draft, which player(s) do you think have the best chance to make the Cowboys and contribute to the team? SAM RUBENSTEIN / HENDERSON, NV

Nick: Good question and you're right, there always seems to be a few guys make the team. I'll give three names Sean McKeon was a guy they nearly drafted in the fifth round but got him in free agency. It's a spot where he can possibly beat out Dalton Schultz. I also like safety Luther Kirk the only safety added to the team this weekend. He was a big-time player on the FCS level. And then there's James Madison defensive end Ron'dell Carter, who apparently already has some guarantees in his contract that would keep him on the books. Sounds like the Cowboys have some big plans for him.

Jonny:
Aaron Parker out of Rhode Island intrigues me the most. The top three receivers are well-established in Dallas, but they'll need depth. Parker didn't exactly play against the country's stiffest competition, but he was no slouch. He scored 30 touchdowns over his career and, at 6-3, he's got the size to make plays in the NFL. Sometimes for receivers in a position like this, chemistry with the quarterback is the difference between seeing real game snaps or not even making the team.

If you go back to the video I posted on Gallimore from Voch Lombardi, as he very well points out OU had him doing some silly stunts that frankly detracted from his effectiveness vice just letting him get after it in his gap, not to mention putting him at 1-tech.

I listened to a radio interview Lincoln Riley did with BAD radio the other day. He said when Gallimore arrived at OU, he had football knowledge equal to a Texas 8th grader and was way behind everyone in his recruiting class. Riley said he worked really hard to catch up and that he will continue to get better and better.
