Status of Texas Tech starting QB McLane Carter uncertain for Week 2

For the second straight week, Texas Tech's starting quarterback situation is unclear heading into a game.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said during Monday's Big 12 coaches teleconference that McLane Carter's status is uncertain for Saturday's game against Lamar after he suffered a high-ankle sprain in the season-opening loss to Ole Miss.

Kingsbury said the team will use the next couple of days to evaluate him.

Freshman Alan Bowman replaced him against the Rebels and completed 29 of 49 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown.

Kingsbury opted for Bowman over sophomore Jett Duffey, who was once expected to be a frontrunner for the starting job.

After the Week 1 loss, Kingsbury said both Bowman and Duffey would get "a ton of reps this week."

Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has issued a new injury update for backup quarterback Austin Kendall. It's good news for the Sooners.

Kendall, a former four-star recruit, suffered a scary injury in the season opener against FAU on Saturday. He collided with an equipment truck on the sideline.

Riley told reporters today that Kendall is questionable for this weekend's game against UCLA, but he didn't suffer a long-term injury.

Kendall should be back "pretty shortly."

"Is it going to be this week? Is it going to be next week?" Riley asked Monday on the Big 12 coaches teleconference. "I don't think anything, at least, that's going to keep him out long term. Just from a functionality, getting over soreness, physically being able to play, we'll have to monitor throughout the week. See how he responds to treatment. Plan to have the other guys ready if he's not available"

Kendall is the backup to Kyler Murray, who looked extremely good in the season-opening win against Lane Kiffin's team.

There's not a ton of so

Oklahoma football: LB Addison Gumbs intends to transfer

NORMAN, Okla. (KOKH) Oklahoma linebacker Addison Gumbs plans to transfer, the team announced on Wednesday.

The sophomore suffered a season-ending knee injury last Friday, but he won't be in a Sooners jersey when he's healthy again.

"Addison did a very nice job while he was here," said coach Lincoln Riley in a statement, "and we certainly wish him the best."

Gumbs, who leaves the program because of "personal reasons," played in four games last season as a freshman. He finishes his Oklahoma career with eight tackles, half a tackle for loss and one pass breakup.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Gumbs was rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports.com. He was considered one of the top 2017 defensive prospects in the country.

Gumbs is a native of Hayward, California, and attended Stellar Preparatory High School.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Ohio State has filed an action against Oklahoma to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. The item in question? A block "O."

The notice of opposition was filed last week. Ohio State uses the block "O" as its primary logo, and the school extensively outlines the history of its use in the action.

The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents filed a trademark application for the mark in December 2017. OU claims its block "O" has been in commercial use since 2001. The mark is most noticeable to Sooner fans as the logo on the chest of the drum major.

Ohio State claims it has used the block "O" since 1898 and that Oklahoma's applied-for mark is "highly similar" and that "confusion is likely."

The Kansas football program continues to fight for relevancy. After a miserable 1-11 campaign last season, the Jayhawks got off to another rough start by losing to Nicholls State in the season opener.

It was the second time that David Beaty has led his team to defeat against an FCS program.

The team has been so bad, in fact, that university president Jeff Long has had to step in to issue a statement.
"We all expected a different outcome Saturday but I continue to support our student-athletes and coaches and ask all Jayhawks to do the same. Our evaluation of the program is on-going without a predetermined timeline," Long wrote.

Under Beaty, the Jayhawks are a miserable 3-34.

If things don't get better, it's going to be time for the Jayhawks to find a new head coach. As one of the Big 12's bottom-dwellers, the Jayhawks have been a doormat and laughing stock to the conference.

Next up for the Jayhawks is another losable game on Saturday, Sept. 8 against Central Michigan. Kickoff between the Jayhawks and Chippewas is set for 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Oklahoma RB Rodney Anderson Out for Season With Knee Injury

Oklahoma junior running back Rodney Anderson will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a right knee injury against UCLA on Saturday, the program announced.

Anderson suffered the injury on the final play of the first quarter of the Sooners' 49-21 win over the Bruins. His leg was pinned underneath a UCLA defender, prompting him to depart for the locker room alongside two trainers.

"We're heartbroken for him," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said of Anderson. "He's overcome so much in his career, and if anybody can do it again it's Rodney."

The injury marks the second season-ending instance Anderson has suffered in his collegiate career. As a freshman in 2014, he broke his left fibula, and in 2015 he fractured a vertebrae.

Anderson entered the year as an All-Big 12 preseason selection and was considered a contender for this year's Heisman Trophy. Last year, Anderson broke out, rushing for 1,161 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 281 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell called senior quarterback Kyle Kempt "day-to-day" and said his status for the Oklahoma game this weekend is "up in the air." Kempt suffered an ankle injury in the second half against Iowa and was unable to return.

"We dodged a big bullet," said Campbell, who initially feared the injury was worse.
Kempt completed 15 of 21 passes in the 13-3 loss against the Hawkeyes. After initially trying to play through the injury, he was replaced by sophomore Zeb Noland.

Kempt's first career start actually came last season at Oklahoma, a game the Cyclones won in a major upset, 38-31. Kempt threw three touchdowns in the victory.

College football may not officially have a free agency period, but athletes are moving more and more frequently to find playing time or the right fit.

In need of improvements throughout the roster, the Oregon State Beavers football program has not been shy about securing top players on the move under coach Jonathan Smith.

Less than two weeks after landing Nebraska quarterback transfer Tristan Gebbia, Oregon State again added a key piece, as former U.S. Army All-American and consensus four-star defensive end Addison Gumbs is listed in the online student directory:

Gumbs, a sophomore, elected to transfer from Oklahoma last weekafter sustaining a season-ending knee injury.

As a freshman, the 6-foot-3, 253-pound defensive lineman registered eight tackles and was in the mix for a starting job up front for the Sooners this fall.

Gumbs was a U.S. Army All-American and was rated the nation's No. 9 defensive end in the class of 2017, committing to Oklahoma over offers from Louisville, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USC, Washington and many others.

He will enter the mix next fall along with a talented collection of true freshmen defensive linemen, including Clackamas defensive tackle Kelsen Hennessy, Marshfield defensive end Cory Stover and Mater Dei nose tackle Evan Bennett.

WVU-N.C. State Game Cancelled

Just minutes after West Virginia football head coach Dana Holgorsen said that his team was preparing for this weekend's N.C. State game and he had not been informed of any decision, N.C. State officials announced that the game would be cancelled.

"NC State will not play its scheduled football game with West Virginia University this weekend due to the increasing likelihood of severe and unsafe conditions associated with Hurricane Florence," the press release stated. "Emergency management resources are expected to be fully utilized and needed throughout the region, and today's decision will help give ample time to deploy those resources across the state."

The release did state that the game could be rescheduled, or that the Wolfpack will pick up "a replacement home game," presumably during their bye later in the year. The Mountaineers have made no such comment on alternative plans, other than Holgorsen's words during his press conference.

"We will switch gears," said Holgorsen, who went on to reiterate that his team would treat this as if it were an unconventional bye week. he bye weeks are typically spent with rest, time off, and recruiting.

Instead, West Virginia will prepare as if they're playing N.C. State, and if the game is called off, they will turn to game prep for Kansas State over the weekend.

Holgorsen said Tuesday that he has no interest in moving the game to another day or time in order to "beat the storm." He's been in that scenario before and it did not work out well. When he was part of the staff in Houston, Hurricane Ike barreled toward the town in 2008. The game was moved to Dallas, then the time changed, then the hurricane - which had just got done hitting his players' hometown - sped up and dumped rain and winds on them in Dallas anyway. The Cougars lost that game and "were discombobulated for the next two weeks," losing the following week as well. Both games were three-point deficits.

Our own Mike Casazza immediately asked West Virginia for comment on a potential rescheduling.

"I have no information at this time on rescheduling the game," said a spokesperson for the school
Assuming that everything holds true - that West Virginia will not play N.C. State (or any other team) this weekend - the Mountaineers will next take the field on Saturday, September 22nd. Kansas State will come to Morgantown for a game that is set to kickoff at 3:30PM ET and will be televised on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The game has been designated as the program's annual Stripe the Stadium Game.

According to WVU Director of Digital Media, John Antonik, the last West Virginia game to be completely canceled came in 1954 when Washington & Lee dropped football in the summer leading up to the season and there was no replacement available. The 2005 game versus South Florida was postponed due to weather, while the 1963 matchup against Davidson was pushed back due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Texas OL Patrick Hudson out of hospital after heat-related illness

Texas offensive lineman Patrick Hudson was released from the hospital and is expected to return to classes on Thursday, the school announced Wednesday.

Hudson was hospitalized and treated in intensive care on Sept. 5 after suffering a heat-related illness in practice. The Texas training staff dunked the 6-foot-4, 335-pound sophomore in a cold bath to get his body temperature down before an ambulance arrived.

Hudson was released from the ICU the following day but had remained in the hospital while doctors ran tests.
The school said there is no timetable yet for Hudson to rejoin the football team.
