The Aggies Knock Off the Longhorns as Nation's Most Valuable College Football Program

orbes released its annual ranking of college football's most valuable programs on Tuesday, and there was a changing of the guard at the top: the University of Texas has been replaced by Texas A&M.

Though this is the first ranking from the magazine since 2015, UT has long been atop Forbes's list. According to the magazine, in 2011 the Longhorns became the first college football team ever to record $100 million in revenue. Three years later, the team turned $92 million in profit, which was more than all but two teams made that year in revenue alone.

A&M, meanwhile, has had a rapid ascension to the top. In 2014, the Aggies were just the thirteenth most valuable college football program, with a team value of $78 million and a revenue of $58 million. But according to Forbes, the Aggies averaged $107 million in profit and $148 million in revenue over the past three years. On average, that's $20 million more in profit than UT made over the same time frame, and $15 million more in revenue.

But just because A&M has knocked off UT from the top spot doesn't mean Bevo is out begging in the streets. The Longhorns rank in the top five in contributions, ticket sales, endowments, concessions, and youth camps. On top of that, UT gets $31 million from licensing, royalties, and advertising, which is 50 percent more than any other team makes from that revenue stream. That's largely thanks to a roughly $10 million per year deal the athletic department has with Nike and a TV contract with ESPN for the Longhorn Network that runs through 2031.

A&M and UT are far and away the most valuable programs in the country. The third-richest program, Michigan, is very far behind, raking in just $127 million in revenue and $75 million in profit. There was only one other Texas team on the list: Texas Tech was Forbes' twenty-fifth most valuable program, with a revenue of $60 million and $31 million in profit.

A&M's rise to the top is mostly due to a major increase in contributions to the athletic department. From 2014 through the 2016-17 season, the A&M athletic department brought in $260 million in contributions, which was almost twice as much as any other school made in the same time. A&M devoted $119 million of that money to its football program, Forbes reported. UT's athletic department, meanwhile, brought in $123 million, and Florida, the next highest earner after A&M, made $138 million in contributions.

A&M also made a lot of money from ticket sales, averaging $41 million per year, good for third-most in the nation. Moving from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2012 was also kind to Aggie pocketbooksaccording to Forbes, each team in the conference received $41 million in the SEC's most recent revenue distribution, compared to just $34 million received by each Big 12 team. However, Forbes suggested A&M's tenure at the top may be short, attributing the bump in contributions to fundraising efforts for the now-completed renovations at Kyle Field.

Of course, neither A&M nor UT have been particularly good lately, combining for 56 wins and 50 losses since 2014. They also have just one national championship between them in the last thirty years. Proof, perhaps, that money can't buy everything. Either way, both programs should continue to make ridiculous bank.

Iowa State Awards Placekicker Chris Francis with a Scholarship

Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell rewarded another walk-on for their determination, work ethic and commitment to the team with the announcement that senior placekicker Chris Francis has been placed on scholarship for his final season.

Francis joins Kyle Kempt and Spencer Benton as Cyclones who entered school as walk-ons but will finish their respective careers on scholarship.

Campbell gave the news to Francis in a team meeting last Thursday.

"Chris is another example of a kid who just kept working," Campbell said. "He's been one of the best kickoff guys in the Big 12 and we are happy to award him for his efforts."

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Francis joined the Iowa State program in 2014. He quickly made his way onto the field when he became ISU's kickoff specialist midway through the 2015 season.

In 2016, Francis was the co-winner of ISU's Outstanding Walk-On Player Award when he recorded 35 touchbacks in 67 attempts. He had another banner year in 2017, posting 38 touchbacks in 67 kicks, helping the Cyclones rank second in the league in kickoff coverage.

Francis was thrilled when he received the news.

"I was really surprised and in shock," Francis said. "I wasn't expecting that right before a game because we've already started the season. It was just a very surprising and humbling thing."

Francis, who has only attempted one PAT and zero field goal attempts in his career, is hoping to make an impact at placekicker in his final season with the Cyclones. He has the strongest leg on the team and is currently locked in a heated competition with sophomore Connor Assalley and freshman Brayden Narveson.
Right now, Francis is just happy his hard work hasn't been unnoticed.

"It's awesome and it means a lot to me," Francis said. "It's nice to have that hard work finally pay off. I'm thankful that I made it this far and I appreciate everyone who's helped me along the way."

Longhorns Malcolm Roach out 6 to 8 weeks with fractured foot

Junior linebacker Malcolm Roach will not be available for action when the Longhorns take the field to open Big 12 Conference play Saturday against No. 17 ranked TCU. Second-year head coach Tom Herman confirmed Horns247's report that Roach sustained a fractured foot this past weekend in the first quarter against USC, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 37-14 win over the Trojans. Roach's injury will require surgery and is expected to sideline him for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

As Horns247 first reported over the weekend, sources indicated Roach was initially being evaluated for a broken foot, though the injury needed further testing before an official diagnosis could be given. At the time of injury, UT officials stated Roach sustained a foot injury, while Herman confirmed the linebacker was in a boot and on crutches during his post game press conference.

"One of the pillars of our program is competitive focus, meaning when your number is called, you're ready," Herman said when discussing Roach's absence. "I'm sure that those guys that are behind him will be."

Roach's injury is coming at an unfortunate time for the Longhorns as they prepare for Big 12 play with Game 1 against the Horned Frogs. Texas has lost the last four consecutive games to TCU, and are 1-5 against Gary Patterson's teams since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12 Conference ahead of the 2012 football season. The only win Texas notched came in 2013 under former head coach Mack Brown against a TCU team that finished the season with a 7-6 overall record.

Roach made start No. 11 of his career against the Trojans Saturday night when he nabbed another start at B-backer for the Longhorns. The hybrid defensive end/linebacker spot in Todd Orlando's defense is a somewhat familiar type of role for Roach, as he played a similar position during his senior year of high school.

In addition to Roach's injury, true freshman running back Keaontay Ingram has been recovering from a bone bruise and MCL sprain he sustained in the Longhorns' Week 2 win against Tulsa. Herman stated Ingram's status is probably questionable at this point, though he was running in practice Sunday. Herman believes the staff will have a better understanding of where Ingram stands come Tuesday.

Thousands of dollars in electronics stolen from TCU locker room in week leading up to Ohio State game

FORT WORTH

A thief stole thousands of dollars worth of electronics from the lockers of TCU football players as they practiced last week, police say.

The theft happened about 5:15 p.m. Sept. 11 inside Texas Christian University's Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex, TCU police Detective Mike McCormack said.

On Monday, TCU police released photographs of a person of interest in the case who was caught on security cameras hanging out near the locker room for about an hour

"He'd walk to the locker room and if someone came out, he would just turn around and get on his phone," McCormack said.

The man, who was wearing a backpack, was later caught on camera leaving the locker room and immediately walking out of the main doors, McCormack said.

"He was in and out of there in 10 minutes," McCormack said. "He knows what he's doing."
The same man is a person of interest in a similar theft from the Southern Methodist University football team's locker room on Sept. 4, McCormack said.

McCormack said it is unknown if the suspect is local or may be targeting schools across the Metroplex or state. Police are notifying other colleges and universities to be on alert.

Iowa State Linebacker done for 2018

After a 37-27 loss to No. 5 Oklahoma, Iowa State finds itself fighting for its first win of the season. This week, the Cyclones (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) take on the Akron Zips (2-0, 0-0 MAC) Saturday at 11 a.m on Fox Sports Networks.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell spoke with the media during the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday to preview Akron and discuss Iowa State's start to the season.

Bobby McMillen III was injured during Iowa State's loss to Oklahoma.

"Unfortunately for Bobby, he did tear his ACL in the game," Campbell said. "So he will be out for the year. It's been a tough road for Bobby and Bobby's been one of those guys that has been a do-everything guy for us, especially in the world of special teams."

McMillen III recorded nine tackles last season and one sack, playing mostly on special teams. This year he was in the running for the starting mike linebacker spot, which was eventually won by freshman Mike Rose.

McMillen III saw some time at linebacker against Oklahoma but did not record a tackle.

His injury likely leaves redshirt freshman O'Rien Vance as the backup to Rose at mike linebacker.

The fun story behind why UT's new police dog is named 'Baylor'

We love seeing the many ways Baylor grads fling their green and gold afar especially in fun and unexpected ways.

Like this one: Diego Rivas, a 2017 Baylor MBA graduate who lives in Austin, recently donated a beautiful Belgian Malinois puppy to the University of Texas Police Department. His only request? That they name the dog "Baylor."

UTPD accepted the gift, and so the University of Texas now has a member of their K-9 unit named after our beloved university.

When the Rivas family was recognized by the department for their generous donation, Diego made sure to sport some BU gear for the photo op (see above).

Sic 'em, Baylor and UTPD!

Oklahoma State WR Jalen McCleskey most accomplished player yet to utilize new redshirt rule

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy announced Monday that Cowboys wide receiver Jalen McCleskey has decided to redshirt the 2018 season and transfer from the school. According to Gundy, the reason McCleskey has decided to transfer is that he's not getting the ball enough.

Players announcing their transfer four games into the season is a trend that we should get used to seeing due to the NCAA's new redshirt rules that allow players to appear in up to four games and still redshirt a season.

McCleskey certainly isn't the first player to take advantage of this rule in 2018, but his case is a bit different than the others we've already seen in 2018.

McCleskey may not feel he's getting the ball enough, but he's been getting the ball more than others.

Through four games this season, McCleskey has caught 15 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his touchdowns came in the season opener against Southwest Missouri State, but he did catch four passes for 52 yards against Texas Tech on Saturday in Oklahoma State's loss.

Furthermore, McCleskey is a top-10 receiver in Oklahoma State school history. Since coming to Oklahoma State in 2015, he's caught 167 passes for 1,865 yards and 17 touchdowns. That's good enough for sixth all-time in the Oklahoma State record books for receptions and ninth for touchdowns.

The former three-star recruit out of Louisiana shouldn't have a difficult time finding a suitor for his final year of eligibility in 2019.

Let me see if I get this straight. He is getting a fair share of opportunities in relation to the plays called. It's still not enough to satisfy his me me me attitude. You thought Gundy would have learned with Dez Bryant and avoided such self centered players.

Final thought, did the NCAA not see the loop hole of combining a unrestricted transfer with the red shirt rule. IMO the rule should be if you played "any" time the year you transfer you used up that year of eligibility.

Populous (Who Designed McLane Stadium) picked for $175M Texas Longhorns stadium renovations

Dive Brief:
 • The University of Texas announced Thursday that it has selected Kansas City-based architecture firm Populous to design a $175 million renovation and expansion of its Longhorn football team's Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
 • The construction project at the venue's south end zone will fully enclose the 95-year-old stadium. The project will see the addition of new entry towers, terraces with concession areas, a Longhorn logo-shaped balcony cut into the seating bowl, a student seating area with multiple patios, loge seating, suites, a new broadcasting stage, new coaching and staff offices, a field-level club and student-athlete training facilities.
 • "The modern game day experience is about quality, not quantity," said Sherri Privitera, Populous Principal-in-Charge for the expansion. "Fans want unique experiences in an authentic place. This is a game-changing project." Populous' previous sports-related projects include four other end zone projects at the University of Arkansas, University of Oklahoma, Kansas State University and the University of Colorado. UT's south end project is scheduled to begin next summer and wrap up in time for the start of the 2021 college football season.

Dive Insight:

When universities and major league sports teams decide to build a new stadium or perform extensive remodeling work on an existing facility, they often turn to known experts in this specialty niche of construction and design.

For instance, Populous has designed 1,325 stadiums across 34 countries for an estimated total construction value of $23 billion. These projects include Texas A&M's Kyle Field in College Station, Texas; Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota; Audi Field in Washington D.C.; State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona; Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri; and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. (Why did this Longhorn Homer not also mention Baylor's McLane Stadium)

And just like some specialty design firms, there are also construction companies that focus on this area, such as Mortenson. Some of the company's projects both complete and still underway include Allianz Field, one of Populous' projects; the Milwaukee Bucks' Fiserv Forum; the Chase Center in San Francisco; U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis; Suntrust Park outside of Atlanta; and the new stadium that will be home to the Oakland Raiders after the franchise makes it move to Las Vegas.

Not only do companies that establish themselves in sports construction or any other niche, such as hospitals or bridge building offer pertinent expertise that can help streamline the construction process, they also can give a less experienced design team some pointers as to what works and what doesn't in the field.

Tech football player arrested on misdemeanors

By Don Williams / A-J Media
Texas Tech football wide receiver Myller Royals was arrested Friday on two misdemeanor charges after a traffic stop on campus by a Tech Police Department officer.

Royals was booked into the Lubbock County Jail on charges of possession of a prohibited weapon (knuckles), a Class A misdemeanor, and driving with an invalid license, a Class B misdemeanor. He bonded out of the jail on Saturday.

Royals, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound freshman, has yet to play in a game this season and Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said recently he plans to redshirt Royals this year.

"He's still on the team," Tech athletic department spokesman Matt Dowdy said Wednesday. "It's being handled internally, between him and coach Kingsbury."

Royals signed with the Red Raiders last winter after a record-setting career at Abilene Cooper and joined the team in January.

A Tech Police officer stopped Royals just before 4 p.m. Friday, according to a summary of the department's daily reports. The reason for the stop is not listed. A copy for the police report was unavailable Wednesday.
The bond amounts were $1,000 on the prohibited weapon charge and $750 on the invalid license charge.
