It's an early report with no details. I'm going to guess illegals that were abandoned by the mule that brought them up. We'll see soon enough

Now saying at least 46 deaths, the people were stuffed in a 18 wheelers trailer it appears.

This is terrible, there couldn't be a more horrible way to die.

16 found still alive.

Joaquin Castro, who represents Texas' 20th congressional district, said: "This horrible tragedy is a reminder that we need a safe, orderly way for people to claim asylum."

People become irate about school shootings, and rightfully so but, how many die each year trying to come into the US. How many die in the desert or trunks of cars?

CONTROL THE BOARDER!!!

An orderly flow of migrants will save lives and make lives better for all of those involved. This isn't hard to figure out.

Think it thru.

How do 46 people end up dead in an 18-wheeler trailer in San Antonio? They clearly didn't ride in that trailer across the border. So where did they hope that ride? There are Border Patrol checkpoints at Hebronville, Falfurrias, and Kingsville, so the rendevous had to be on or north of Tx 285/359.

We found a dead illegal alien 2 years ago on our lease 5mi south of 285, about halfway between Falf and Hville. From the spot his body lay face down in the sand, the closest point to the border was 76mi. So these illegals have to walk for days thru a desert to get to those rendevous points. The only water available is what they can carry in their backpacks or in cattle troughs. The ground is the consistence of beach sand, so it's not easy walking. And of course it's summertime. To escape the heat and detection from USBP, they only walk at night, and sleep in the mesquite mottes during the day.

So who organizes all this? Who knows how to get across the river? Who knows the proper path to take thru enormous ranches crossed by zero public roads? And who knows how to find that spot on TX 285 where truck will be waiting? And who sets the time and date for that meeting? Where were these illegals headed? Dallas? Houston? Chicago? Boston? If it was to San Antonio, they wouldn't have still been in the truck. How much does it cost to arrange all these logistics?

We have a river of inhumanity flowing across our border up the arteries of interstate commerce right into the neighborhoods we live. Not since the slave trade have we seen such barbarity occurring on our soil. And yet, when we see illegal aliens, we feel better about ourselves. We are such a great country! People want to come here!!! We can help them!!! We actually ascribe virtue to a dynamic that generates hundreds of millions of dollars per year to the drug cartels who are smuggling human beings into the USA, activity which almost completely consumes available USBP resources, complicating enforcement of drug smuggling and legal commerce.

Hope we don't lose focus on who's most responsible ........the Mexican drug cartels .

Human trafficking is the drug cartels 2nd most lucrative 'business' .

People need to wake up to the reality that along with millions of Mexicans entering the country illegally ......you have hundreds of members of the cartels mixed in.

And setting up 'shop' throughout the US.

He and Mayorkas need to be impeached on day one after the GOP takes over majorities in November - just on the border disaster alone. Won't surprise me if the R's don't have the guts to do it based on past performance, but that's what should happen.

Yep. Which has been a problem for decades.

Our resident libs like to pretend that Trump has hurt the Republican party, when in fact, the GOP was already a disaster before Trump came along and one reason that lead to his election.

GOP voters have grown tired of the BS from gutless Republicans and RINOs

Make no mistake, there is a tacit bi-partisan consensus to tolerate illegal immigration.

America has a birth rate (1.6%) well below replacement rate (2.1%). If not remedied, this has enormous long term implications for economic growth and social stability. That means the number of babies born in 2020 (3.6m) should have been 4.8m. We've always solved that problem with legal immigration, but that number runs approx 1m or so a year. So all it's doing, according to the data we can see, is getting us close to replacement rate. Yet, according to census data, our population keeps growing! by 2m a year!
https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/us-population/

How can that be?

It's because our policy makers are tolerating illegal immigration to solve the birth rate problem. We COULD solve it by increasing illegal immigration. But Congress does not have the fortitude to do that, fearing the American people would not support it. So they just issue restrictive ROE for the USBP, refuse to build a wall, allow Mexico to permit transit, and allow Central Americans to migrate. When they arrive, we define them as refugees even though statute clearly and unambiguously defines asylum as "political" rather than "economic."

But the economy keeps growing.
The tax base keeps growing.
Life is good!
Particularly for federal elected officials. They don't have to get creative. Population growth ensures economic growth. ensures growth of tax base.
All they have to do is just turn a blind eye to the illegal immigration.

Easy Peasy!

I don't understand the BIden comments, so help me here.

If the border is wide open and there is no enforcement for being in this country illegally, why do people have to be run in by mules like this? Apparently those seeking to immigrate pay thousands of dollars to ride in these trucks. If the border situation is how it is described, it seems like a $150 Greyhound bus fare would accomplish the same thing with much less danger.

Because they're not willing to wait at a processing center then to be shipped to random parts of the country. They could have been lied to by the cartels and told it was necessary. Regardless, the numbers of caught and released don't lie. The flights all over the country don't lie. The masses at the border don't lie. We have the most open border we have suffered in 60 years.

See my prior post. They wouldn't be able to clear the checkpoints on a bus. They have to get north of Hwy 285 to be able to travel on highways. And there's no bus stops on that dark desert highway. And it's cheaper to transport them in a tractor-trailer rig than in a bus.

98% of the folks crossing illegally paid somewhere between $2k and $10k for cartel escort. The poor saps in the trailers didn't have the funds for a ride in an SUV.

The answers I am getting are: (1) we have an open border and (2) people have to be smuggled across the open border. There seems to be a conflict between those two things.

Go at it a different way: what policies need to change to stop the flow of illegal immigration and specifically, to prevent episodes like yesterday's?

Catch and release, specifically. Too much incentive to risk it and slip through the cracks.

Thank you for a real answer.

Seems like that would require a huge investment in detention facilities, the health and human services structure to go with them and the immigration courts so that we can move cases faster.

Are you saying that: (1) people are disappearing after being released in numbers sufficient to justify the investment; (2) the ability to live and work in the United States until adjudication and deportation is enough incentive so that if we invest the money and end opportunity, the investment will be justified; or (3) both or something different?

There is no conflict between those two statements. We have such a mass of humanity at the border and our system is so overwhelmed that many just choose to invade the old fashioned way, hiding in trucks and sneaking, in order to speed up being in this country. Many don't know any other way. The open border problem is SO bad that all means and methods are being taken by illegals.

If you'd like to stop or slow this crisis, we have to make people remain in Mexico while they await a trial and we have to start deporting people who come across illegally. We have to honor the asylum rules and stop giving mere economic immigrants asylum status. We also have to stop allowing anyone to cross Mexico, a "safe country", in order to get here and claim asylum.

It's not the quaint culture of old days when a vaquero would ride his horse across the river to go work on a gringo ranch.

It's a protection racket. You make the trip on your own and you're risking everything.

One day I was coming back from Harlingen toward Kingsville. I saw two young men running down the road. Obvious illegal aliens wearing dark clothing plaid shirts day backpacks etc. I looked up the road and saw a border patrol officer leaning against the bed of his pick up waiting for these two young illegal aliens who are jogging toward him down the side of the highway. Normally in the old days illegal aliens ran away from the border patrol. I've actually watched border patrol and Coast Guard helicopters round up groups running through the ranch. I have pictures and videos of same, as it was happening.

But here we see the small group running toward certain apprehension by the border patrol. I was curious to what was happening so I called one of my good friends who is a USBP supervisor in McAllen. He said almost certainly those boys were running scared from the cartels. It was too close to Harlingen for them to have been in physical distress from heat or or illness. More likely they have decided to cross on their own and were spotted by a group escorted by the cartels, then decided to give them self up to USBP rather than risk being captured by the cartels. Bad things happen to people who get caught down in South Texas in an illegal alien crossing who did not pay the cartel the protection money to cross. That's why some of the bodies they find on the ranches every year have bullet holes in them.

It's hard for most Americans to appreciate how bad it really is down there. That kid we found on the lease was strip searched and left for dead when he couldn't go on. Darwinian. They even tried to take his pants, then apparently noticed he'd soiled them enough they weren't worth having.

Yes, we have a more open border under biden.

As far as policy, The biden administration could enforce the damn immigration laws we have now instead of shipping them all across the country

As I understand it, "enforcing the laws we have" means that arrestees must be kept in detention center until trial. That is logistically impossible currently and would take a huge investment and years of building to get there.
