Milley acted with good intentions and probably did the world a favor.

That said he was also wrong. Chain of command ought to mean something to a guy in his position. We have a civilian commander in chief for a reason. While the president demonstrated time and again that he had no clue as to the limits to his authority, we could vote him out of office and we did. And we always can.

How do you know he acted with good intentions. Were you there?

Did the world a favor? If you actually think Trump was going to launch nukes at China, you're a bigger idiot than biden.

I read the same stuff you do, how is it that you can't make the very short step to see the same thing?

Yes, he did the world a favor. And it is still a favor without regard to what you or I think was going to happen because (and this may hurt so consider this a trigger warning, snowflake) what you or I think doesn't matter. What matters is what China thought. And that is where Gen. Milley did the world a favor.

When a general decides to ATTACK another country without civilian approval of his actions ….without the president's approval of his actions …..

Will he still be doing the ' world a favor ' ?

Or does it all depend if one likes the president or not ?

A horrible precedent has been set .

Better nip it in the bud now .

Did you not read what I posted earlier?

Don't care to analyze your various ambiguous diatribes .

Read what you posted saying the General did the world a favor.

Clearly he did not .

It was a very dangerous act regardless if the sitting president is a republican or democrat.

At the very least he needs to be dismissed with the loss of all retirement benefits .

Ah, well maybe we can discuss some more of your counterfactual fanfic...

Hey, you said he did the world a favor than reiterated it.

Squish: He was wrong, but he did the world a favor

Also, Squish: Hey, I said he was wrong. Don't pretend to know where I stand.

Okay, I won't pretend. I'll just take you at face value and know that you weren't the least bit concerned since you believe he did the world a favor.

You really can't hold two ideas in mind at the same time. Try again: he did the world a favor. He was wrong to do so. Why does that cause you to short circuit?

So, should Milley go to jail if the what the book says happened is true? Should he lose his job?

The book portion can be true without being the whole story. The story as I can make out is that the book left out some details that exonerate Gen. Milley. See Osodecentex's informative posts.
I'm not interested word salad arguments or debating nuances with you. If Milley made a call to his foreign counterpart in China, unbeknownst to Trump, then told China that he would give them a heads up prior to any military action, does Milley belong in jail? Or do you think he should be celebrated for "saving the world"?

Choose one:

1) Belongs in jail
2) Should be celebrated

It wasn't word salad.

Nuance is crucial to meaning.

Not going to answer the question?

Nope. Not big on "Did you stop beating your wife?" nonsense.

Not surprised. But let's admit, you're just not big on being boxed in. Hard to have it both ways when you're cornered.

Binary thinking certainly makes it look like that. When you get the energy for some hard thinking with nuances you let me know.

As to your first option: what statute did he violate?

What statute did he violate? Let me review it and I'll tell you if I think he belongs in jail. And that's assuming he's found guilty, because plainly he doesn't belong in jail under a presumption of innocence.

The question is simple squish. If, note I said IF Milley (or any soldier, general, etc...) called China unbeknownt to Trump (or any president) to tell that foreign country "Don't worry, if the president takes military action against you, I'll give you a heads up first". Does that person who made the call to China:

1) Belong in jail

or

2) Be celebrated for saving the world

It's not that hard

Your hypothetical is false. Let's wait and get more information.

If DoD people knew about, were in on it, and Sec of Def received a written report, and did not tell Trump, that isn't on the general.

Your are absolutely right, it is not hard: people go to jail for breaking laws. What law was broken?

You're arguing a different point. You're trying to argue if he's guilty.

My question deals with someone that is found guilty.

So now, answer the question

If Milley did in fact have a meeting in his office with members of the National Military Command Center and had them take an "oath" not to proceed with any nuclear strike orders from Trump without consulting him first, then I say, at the very least, Milley should be charged with insubordination and jailed.

A professor of political science at MIT and an expert on nuclear proliferation issues, said that there was no way for Milley or anyone else to prevent the president from launching nuclear weapons.

"The president, and the president alone, possesses the sole authority to order a nuclear launch, and no one can legally stop him or her. Nuclear procedures do not require the agreement or approval of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, any action Milley may have had in mind to interfere with such an order, would almost certainly have been illegal."

I bet you actually think Trump was going to launch a nuke at China, didn't ya'?

It is illegal to commit murder, but people do it every day. When a criminal is caught, tried, and found guilty, the criminal faces punishment as prescribed in the law and voted on by the jury.

So, no criminal statutory violation?

He doesn't know and it makes no difference.

Your are absolutely right, it is not hard: people go to jail for breaking laws. What law was broken?

Still not answering my question, I see. But hey, nice attempt at trying to circle around avoiding the question.

Like I said, you absolutely can't stand being cornered with your back up against the wall.

Once again, I'm asking what YOU think. So tell me, 1) Should be celebrated or 2) Should be jailed?

What the hell do you think insubordination is? In the military you can be dishonorably discharged, lose benefits AND be put behind bars. Plus there's the whole thing about interfering with a presidential order and the not following chain of command thing and conspiring with other actors to disrupt military procedure. Plus, it could be argued that he gave aid and comfort to the enemy.

At the very least, Milley should be investigated and charges brought if he broke any laws. But somehow, you probably think it shouldn't be investigated.

Gawd, you're such an idiot quash. We know you're just a liberal hack that will compromise your "libertarian values" to argue against anything Trump.

So, do you think Trump would actually launch a nuke at China because he lost an election?

I didn't think Biden would launch the Taliban to crush the progress Afghan women made over the last 20 years, But here we are.

Now back to America; If Biden has it his way, I hope you enjoy the new and improved IRS that's doubled in size so they can go start going after banking and retirement accounts. The "stunt" was accomplished in the presence of civilians, with the knowledge of the Trump DoD, and with a summary of the call forwarded to Trump's Sec Def.
So no, I don't think one of Obama's generals who did this (as I understand it, these calls are standard operating procedure) would be in Leavenworth.

(as I understand it, these calls are standard operating procedure)
Without the knowledge of the POTUS ?

Who...under which president ?

The question is simple squish. If, note I said IF Milley (or any soldier, general, etc...) called China unbeknownt to Trump (or any president) to tell that foreign country "Don't worry, if the president takes military action against you, I'll give you a heads up first". Does that person who made the call to China:

1) Belong in jail

or

2) Be celebrated for saving the world

It's not that hard

Your are absolutely right, it is not hard: people go to jail for breaking laws. What law was broken?

Still not answering my question, I see. But hey, nice attempt at trying to circle around avoiding the question.

Like I said, you absolutely can't stand being cornered with your back up against the wall.

Once again, I'm asking what YOU think. So tell me, 1) Should be celebrated or 2) Should be jailed?

Jailed for what? Quit dodging.

You're the one dodging the question jackass.

If you're not going to answer my question, then I'm done here.

Well, if you can't find a criminal violation then my answer is, no, he sure doesn't belong in jail.

So, no criminal statutory violation?

So, do you think Trump would actually launch a nuke at China because he lost an election?
Probably not, but I didn't think he would launch rioters at the Capitol to disrupt a Constitutionally mandated function of the legislative branch either.
Trump disrupted the chain of command

The "stunt" was accomplished in the presence of civilians, with the knowledge of the Trump DoD, and with a summary of the call forwarded to Trump's Sec Def.
So no, I don't think one of Obama's generals who did this (as I understand it, these calls are standard operating procedure) would be in Leavenworth.
SOP, really? Wow. If Milley called a foreign power and said, "Hey, I've got your back. If POTUS decides to launch military action against you, don't worry, I'll give you heads up" - that is not in anyway, standard operation procedure.

Wow, talk about a lame post.. I can't believe you're actually trying to pass that off as normal. Just when you think people can't possibly be so stupid, here you are.

I repeat, the call you question was witnessed by civilians from the DoD and a summary was sent to Sec Def. Fifteen people were in the room. Why don't we wait for sworn testimony that is coming soon.
I don't know if Sec Def informed Trump or WH staff. I would say that the knowledge of the Secretary of Defense is informing Trump. It certainly isn't hiding the information from civilian oversight.

Here are some examples of Milley's calls from the month of September:

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Gen. Mark A. Milley thanked by phone the following chiefs of defense for support during the Afghanistan noncombatant evacuation operation:
  • NATO
  • Qatar
  • Germany
  • Kuwait
  • Norway
  • Bahrain
  • United Kingdom
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Turkey

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley met with Chief of Russian General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov on September 22 in Helsinki.

The meeting was a continuation of talks aimed at improving military leadership communication between the two nations for the purposes of risk reduction and operational de-confliction.

In accordance with past practice, both have agreed to keep the specific details of their conversation private.

During the Conference of the NATO Military Committee, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley met with Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Gen. Yaar Gler.
The two leaders discussed multiple items of mutual security interest. They discussed the Afghanistan withdrawal, regional security, and counter terrorism operations. The two leaders also discussed refugees and avoiding a humanitarian crisis.
