I find the lack of transparency around NIL deals to be very frustrating. When we're competing with other schools to recruit a player, how do we know if it's a level playing field? How much NIL money does Baylor have available? TCU? UT and Oklahoma and LSU? Is it reasonable to expect us to compete with the elite national programs for the best players, or are we limited to pursuing mid tier talent? In ancient times, we could evaluate factors such as quality of program, quality of coach, quality of school, existing roster talent, location, etc to make sense of why a player signs with a certain school. With NIL thrown into the mix, and no accurate reporting on the budget of each team, who knows why anybody chooses a program anymore? I don't know if it's legally or practically possible, but it would be so helpful in evaluating offseason moves if we had some idea of the dollars involved.
Yes, it would be nice, but that is not the way it is. To answer your question, I suspect that no, if you look at NIL alone, we probably are not on a level playing field with the top teams in the SEC and B1G. I would hope we are on a close to even keel with others in our league, but I suspect TCU is willing to buy a team if it comes to that and Tech organizations seems to have money that they throw at anything. The rest I would think we could match or exceed.
There is certainly more to recruit on than NIL, but for some that may be all they are interested in. Others may value location, culture, coaching relationships enough to bypass a higher NIL amount. I suspect as it has always been some choose based on one or a few things, others, other things. NIL has just put a dollar amount out there that wasn't out there legally in the past. For some that may be all that matters before they are even willing to look at the factors upon which recruiting was based in the past.
Heck, SMU just got a new coach and the way their boosters have thrown money around, they may just have decided they want to buy an ACC championship. I don't think Barnes is the coach that could lead them there, but they probably won't get there because they don't try if that is what this coaching change is all about.
