Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Mavericks and Grizzlies have agreed to a sign and trade for restricted free agent Delon Wright. The Mavericks will send back two second round picks in the deal. Also per Woj, the deal is for three years, $29 million, which seems to be a good value for what the Mavericks need.

At 6'5, he's able to guard ones, twos and even some threes, with great switching versatility. Anytime he was on the floor while with the Raptors, the team played excellent, elite-level defense. Wright was certainly surrounded by other quality defenders in Toronto, but he's definitely no slouch. He'll be a massive upgrade there for Dallas in the backcourt and his size allows him to cover spots his lesser teammates can't.

Offensively is where the issues might crop up. Wright knows who he is and doesn't try to be anything more he's a career 49.5 percent shooter on twos, mostly sticking close to the rim and the paint. He lacks explosiveness to get to the rim, as evidenced by his dearth of free throw attempts, but he has a variety of ways to get his shot off the closer he gets to the basket. He's very skilled in that department.

Unfortunately outside of the paint, Wright isn't as creative. He's a career 33.2 percent shooter from deep and shot a freezing 29.8 percent last season. Some of that is due to his trade to Memphis, but he's never been a proven shooter and wasn't one in college. He's a solid if unspectacular passer who makes the necessary reads a modern NBA point guard needs to make. He'll keep Dallas' offense moving.

Speaking of his Memphis numbers, they spiked across the board. Once traded for Marc Gasol, Wright got starters' minutes for the first time in his career. He averaged career-high counting stats across the board and his rebound and assist numbers (a little over five per game for each) showcase how versatile he can be.

Delon Wright trade grades: Who wins the deal?

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports
5:50 PM CT

Though they never had a chance to sign him, the Dallas Mavericks were among the losers when Kawhi Leonard chose to sign with the LA Clippers. The Mavericks had been waiting on Leonard's teammate Danny Green, who might have come to Dallas had Leonard signed with the Lakers. Instead, Green got a two-year, $30 million deal from the Lakers and the Mavericks were left with $22 million in cap space and few unrestricted free agents worth anywhere near that much.

After weighing an offer sheet for restricted free agent Delon Wright, Dallas instead came to terms with the Memphis Grizzlies on a sign-and-trade deal that sends a couple of second-round picks to Memphis and gives the Mavericks a versatile point guard.

The deal

Dallas Mavericks get: Delon Wright

Memphis Grizzlies get: Two future second-round picks

Dallas Mavericks: B+

Rick Carlisle can never have enough point guards, and Wright is another playmaking option to go along with Jalen Brunson, a re-signed J.J. Barea (coming off an Achilles rupture) and point forward Luka Doncic. Wright fits well in that mix because he's spent much of his career playing off the ball as part of dual-point guard lineups in Toronto with Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet.

Granting that Wright is a below-average 3-point shooter (33% career), he's enough of a threat that teams have to pay him some attention. Wright can supply secondary playmaking in in an off-ball role and prevents Doncic from needing to bring the ball up and initiate the offense when they play together.

At the other end, Wright's size (6-foot-5) enables him to defend either guard position depending on matchups. He's also an excellent rebounder for a guard, having recorded three triple-doubles in the last four games of 2018-19.

After that performance, I would've loved to see Wright turned loose as a starting point guard. That wasn't to be. Although the Grizzlies traded veteran point guard Mike Conley, they landed the No. 2 pick in this year's draft and took Ja Morant as their point guard of the future.

Wright's reported deal (three years, $29 million) presumably mirrors the structure of the non-taxpayer midlevel exception, which pays a maximum of $29.1 million over three seasons. That's excellent value for a player who could be a starter or a key backup.

My multiyear projections for free agents showed Wright producing nearly $44 million worth of value in that span. Wright had the best projection of any player left on the market. The deal the Mavericks got on Wright's contract, as well as the paucity of other options on the market, makes it reasonable to give up a couple of second-round picks to get this deal done.

Adding Wright does limit Dallas' flexibility in terms of using cap space to take on bad contracts and help replenish the draft picks sent to the New York Knicks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade. The Mavericks now have about $14 million in remaining room, not enough to take on the contract of Goran Dragic or Danilo Gallinari as part of a possible Russell Westbrook trade.

My ESPN colleague Tim MacMahon reported that Dallas plans to hold off on finalizing contracts to re-sign free agents using their cap holds and sign center Boban Marjanovic using the room midlevel exception -- moves that would exhaust their cap space -- until after exploring the trade market. We'll see what they can find.

Memphis Grizzlies: C-

I've been a big fan of the way the Grizzlies have managed the teardown phase of their rebuilding process this summer, getting a pair of first-round picks for Conley and another for taking on Andre Iguodala's contract using a trade exception. In this case, however, I'd have been inclined to just match an offer like this for Wright instead of going the sign-and-trade route.

This price would have been acceptable for Wright as a backup, and Memphis could use an experienced hand to limit the demands on Morant early in his career. Now, the only other point guard the Grizzlies have on their roster is De'Anthony Melton, a 2018 second-round pick acquired from Phoenix in their deal for Josh Jackson.

With the free-agent market for point guards looking barren, Memphis is counting on Melton to develop into a quality backup this season. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Grizzlies sign a veteran point guard like Jose Calderon or Jeremy Lin to play a mentorship role for Morant and Melton.

Rockets should take off this year. Hardin and Westbrook are friends so maybe they can play better together. Both are such ball hogs.

If they can play well together, the Rockets should be pretty good again this year. But, this thing is not going to end well, they owe 2 guys $340 million over the next 4 years (and both guys are already 30). If you add in Clint Capela, the number is $408 million owed to 3 guys over the next 4 years.

Latest On Andre Iguodala
July 15th, 2019 at 2:11pm CST by Luke Adams
The Rockets and Clippers continue to be the two teams most seriously pursuing Grizzlies swingman Andre Iguodala, Shams Charania of Stadium reports (video link). However both Houston and Los Angeles "seem to be at a standstill" in talks with Memphis, per Charania.
According to Charania, the Rockets aren't entirely comfortable with the idea of going deep into luxury-tax territory for Iguodala. While Charania doesn't specify what exactly Houston's package would look like, he refers to "a potential sign-and-trade" that would likely involve Iman Shumpert attached to a draft pick, as I wrote last Friday.
Currently, Houston's team salary is below the tax line, but taking on Iguodala's $17MM+ salary without sending out any guaranteed money could bump the Rockets' projected tax bill up to about $20MM, says Charania.
As for the Clippers, Maurice Harkless' expiring contract is the most logical salary-matching trade chip for L.A. in any deal involving Iguodala. However, Charania hears that the Clips don't want to part with Harkless in an Iguodala trade.
Both the Rockets and Clippers have explored three- or four-team scenarios that might work for Iguodala, per Charania, but that's probably a long shot. Meanwhile, the Mavericks and Nuggets have also engaged with the Grizzlies on Iguodala, but neither team has really gained any real traction in trade discussions.
Marc Stein of The New York Times (Twitter link) previously suggested there's a belief in league circles that the Grizzlies may be leaning toward keeping Iggy on their roster into the season unless they receive a trade offer that includes a first-round pick. We'll see if that ends up being the case if no potential suitors meet their asking price.

So Luka and the Mavs had the Lakers beat in regular time last night. Seconds left, Powell goes to the line to shoot 2, misses one, makes it a 3 pt game, 103-100

Lakers timeout, inbound with 3-4 seconds left. Dwight Howard literally tackles the defender so he cant get to Green who ties the game and sends it into overtime.

Lakers make a end of the game run after Luka is sidelined. Howard also split open Luka's head earlier.

If the Lakers can with with this huge amount of talent they gave (LeBron, Anthony Davis, Green. Howard), they will by cheating.
