Rick Carlisle endorsed Jason Kidd for the head coaching job of the Dallas Mavericks upon his hiring with the Indiana Pacers, which indirectly was an omission for his assistant coach Jamahl Mosley.

That ability to lure top free agents could certainly help the Mavericks reach the next step as they look to build a championship roster around star Luka Doncic. Kidd enjoyed a strong relationship with his biggest star in Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo. There's some question as to how much sway Kidd would actually have on Antetokounmpo himself, though Antetokounmpo did become one of the NBA's best players under Kidd's watch and described himself as "devastated" when Kidd was fired.

I think most anything is a step down from Carlisle. but Kidd is not toxic at all with players. He is a players coach and that is the direction for now.

Regarding him and whichita's Leonard post. Nico seems to be the common thread. Would love to get Damian just for the fact that Luka would have help getting the ball up the court. Probably means that Tim Hardaway wont get his max, but maybe will settle for less

Sweeney was hired by the Detroit Pistons before the 18-19 season.
Sweeney was previously an assistant coach under Kidd with both the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

The Mavericks would surely love a mulligan on the trade they agreed to at last year's draft sending Curry to the Sixers for Richardson. They had to watch Curry emerge as a key starter on the East's top seed, while Richardson fell to the fringes of Rick Carlisle's rotation in the playoffs.

Barring a time machine, wiping Richardson's salary off the books entirely was as well as Dallas was going to do here. Crucially, it brings the Mavericks to $34-plus million in potential cap room if they decline a team option on center Willie Cauley-Stein and renounce their other free agents -- more than enough to get Dallas in a bidding war for Kyle Lowry if they wish. They'd still be north of $30 million with Cauley-Stein, whose team option the Mavericks are leaning toward picking up, according to my ESPN colleague Tim MacMahon

Nobody in the NBA has had a better week than Lowry, who now has two potential suitors sitting on $30-plus million in possible cap space after money-saving trades by Dallas and the New Orleans Pelicans (up to nearly $37 million). It's not entirely clear those teams will use all that money to bid on Lowry, as both teams have their own free agents they might want to bring back (Tim Hardaway Jr. for the Mavericks), but it certainly looks like Lowry is getting paid.

If Dallas does try to re-sign Hardaway first at a lower starting salary than his $28.5 million cap hold, the Mavericks could be looking at a situation in which they could bring back last year's core and still have $10 million to $15 million to spend improving their depth. No matter which direction Dallas takes, the extra $11 million in cap space will likely do more to help win in 2021-22 than Richardson would have done. As a result, the Mavericks look like winners here.

For a bonus, Dallas gets a free look at Brown, whose $1.7 million salary is just $500,000 guaranteed up through the season's midpoint where all contracts become guaranteed. Keeping Brown shaves less than a million off the Mavericks' cap space because he's replacing a cap hold for an empty roster spot.

After excelling in the G League bubble, Brown averaged 14.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per 36 minutes in 43 games for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. Defensive limitations may prevent Brown from playing a large role on a contending team, but he could fit the kind of situational usage Dallas gave Boban Marjanovic the last two seasons at a bargain rate.

Former Oregon Duck power forward Eugene Omoruyi didn't hear his name get called on Thursday night's NBA Draft, but he still found his way to landing with an NBA franchise heading into the 2021 training camp.

Eugene Omoruyi signed as an undrafted free agent contract with the Dallas Mavericks of the Western Conference. The Mavs didn't hold any draft picks for the 2021 NBA Draft and were able to land Omoruyi, who was an all-league Pac-12 player this past season. The Mavs in total signed four players who were not drafted during Thursday's draft.

Omoruyi was the only Duck to start all 28 games in the 2020-21 season. He led the Ducks and was sixth in the conference in scoring at 17.1 points per game. He also ranked sixth in the Pac-12 in steals at 1.5 per game and 14th in rebounds at 5.4 per game. He scored in double figures in 26 of Oregon's 28 games, and he was the team's leading scorer 15 times.

Some around the league believe the Dallas Mavericks will consider trading for Goran Dragic should he end up going to Toronto in the Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade deal with Miami, as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski mentioned. Dallas can be added as a third team in the Lowry sign-and-trade deal where they get Dragic. The Mavericks can also trade for Dragic separately with Toronto. Both avenues can happen using Dallas' cap space.

Reggie Bullock has agreed to a three-year, $30.5 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

Bullock originally signed a two-year, $21 million deal with the New York Knicks in 2019, but it was revised to a two-year deal worth less than the $4.7 million exception due to a back injury.

Bullock averaged 10.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 30.0 minutes per game while shooting 41.0 percent on three-pointers last season.

The Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade to Miami isn't in doubt, but it appears the reason it hasn't been officially completed yet is that Toronto is now trying to re-home Goran Dragic. In statements to the media, Dragic expressed a desire to join the Mavericks and play with Luka Doncic, something Dallas is known to be interested in as well. To join as a third team in that deal, Dallas would have to send at least $14.4 million in salary to Toronto, something most easily done by combining Dwight Powell and Willie Cauley-Stein. But that's also where it gets complicated.


Dallas wouldn't want to do that because Powell is beloved around the organization, and losing two centers in the same transaction would thin the team's depth. The Mavs also don't want to replace Cauley-Stein with one of their prospects in Josh Green or Tyrell Terry. But Toronto likely views Dragic, a proven veteran on an expiring deal, as a positive asset. Dallas wants him, so why shouldn't it give something up? That's the current limbo it's easy to imagine both teams in right now. One possible solution is Dallas finding an expendable player Toronto does want and using a recently acquired trade exception (TPE) to bring something more conducive to the Raptors' likings.

Frank Ntilikina Signs With Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have signed Frank Ntilikina.
Ntilikina spent the past four seasons with the New York Knicks.
The Mavericks were linked to Ntilikina ahead of the 2017 draft.

Probably nothing more than bottom of the roster backup PG, but he was 8th overall in 2017 draft and at 6', has 7'1 wingspan

Ntilikina, 23, averaged 5.5 points and 2.7 assists with the Knicks. Born in Belgium, he moved to France when he was 3 and began his professional career in 2015 in a French pro league.

Raptors have the rights to Goran Dragic which Im sure prompted that move to the Frenchie. Toronto has no intention of buying him out

For a second time in three years, the Mavericks have made a major trade involving Kristaps Porzingis.

Dallas is sending Porzingis and a protected second-round pick to Washington in exchange for Wizards guard Spencer Dinwiddie and forward David Bertans, a source told The Dallas Morning News' Callie Caplan and Brad Townsend. The deal went down less than a half-hour before the NBA's 2 p.m. Thursday trade deadline.

Porzingis has missed the Mavericks' last five games with a right knee bone bruise and had already been ruled out for Thursday night's contest against the Clippers -- what would've been his 22nd absence in 56 games this season.

Dinwiddie, while in a shooting slump this season, has averaged 12.6 points, 5.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds through 44 games in his first year with Washington. He's shooting 37.6% from the field and 31% from three.

The 28-year-old is playing on a $17.1 million salary this season and is under contract through 2024.

After averaging more than 11 points each of the last two seasons, Bertans has played as a reserve in Washington's frontcourt log jam this season, averaging 5.7 points in 14.7 minutes per game.

Bertans, making $16 million this season, is under contract through 2025.

Porzingis signed a five-year, $158.3 million max contract with the Mavericks after the 2019 season, just months after Dallas acquired him in a seven-player blockbuster deal with the Knicks while he recovered from February 2018 ACL surgery.

The Dallas Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis, at least in part, to balance their salaries moving forward. Dallas will almost certainly be in the luxury tax during the 22-23 season.

The $207 million extension signed by Luka Doncic will begin, while Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie are signed for $17 million and $18 million. The Mavericks signed Dorian Finney-Smith to an extension and will also do every this possible to re-sign Jalen Brunson.

"We're going to be in luxury tax hell next year, but that's OK; it frees up the year after that," Mark Cuban said.

The Mavericks will have Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell come off their books after the 22-23 season.

Doncic (22 years, 349 days) is the youngest player in NBA history to record at least 45p/5r/5a in consecutive games.
