What a great trade for Dallas! Christian Wood is an excellent addition for the Mavericks:

Boban may become available soon. Chriss and Brown have previously played for the Rockets but are unlikely to be brought to training camp. Of the veteran players the Rockets will acquire in the deal, the 7-4 Marjanovic is most likely to be with the team given his willingness to embrace a limited role and his effectiveness offensively. But even that possibility is to be determined.

With the players to be added from Wednesday's trade, the Rockets will have 16 players under contract, not including players with two-way contracts and the players to be acquired in the draft. Though the players acquired from the Mavericks are not expected to occupy roster spots, that still points to changes that could be coming.

i wasnt really impressed with Dwight Powell in the playoffs. Seemed overwhelmed

One possible money-saving move, particularly midseason, would be moving on from the popular Powell. He's set to make $11 million in the final season of his contract and might not be needed for the playoffs if the Mavericks can cover the center spot with a combination of Bertans, Kleber and Wood.

LEAK: Dark horse candidate for the Utah Jazz - Dallas Mavericks Assistant Sean Sweeney.

Sweeney is a rising star and defensive mastermind. Longshot candidate to keep on the radar.

What is a Traded Player Exception (TPE) and how big is the one the Mavericks have?

A TPE is created for a team when they trade a player into another team's salary cap space or an existing TPE.

It can only be used to absorb a salary up to $100,000 more than the TPE amount. The Mavericks have a $10,865,952 TPE that expires June 27, 2022.

The Mavericks are very bullish on re-signing Brunson and will, therefore, be DEEP in the luxury tax. So, if hypothetically the Mavericks use the TPE on Derrick Favors and his $10,183,800 salary for 2022-23 then the tax bill gets out of hand quickly.

After re-signing Brunson the Mavericks will potentially be $20 million over the tax line. At that point the Mavericks would owe $45 million in luxury tax. Add $10 million more in the form of Derrick Favors and it goes to $85 million in tax. $40 million in luxury tax for Favors just isn't realistic. And then you add a player you sign at the Taxpayer MLE at $6.392 million and the bill goes to over $116 million!

The Dallas Mavericks will once again explore signing Goran Dragic as a free agent this summer. Dragic was linked to Dallas last year after being bought out by the San Antonio Spurs, but the veteran guard chose to sign with the Brooklyn Nets.

Dragic is a Slovenian countryman of Mavs star Luka Doncic. The two teamed up to lead Slovenia to the 2017 EuroBasket title.

The 36-year-old guard has indicated no desire to retire, despite what was a frustrating season for him. Dragic was traded from the Miami Heat to the Toronto Raptors last offseason. After a brief appearance in Toronto, Dragic was shelved, then shipped to the Spurs in a trade deadline deal, before working a buyout with San Antonio.

Dragic struggled to find much of a rhythm in the regular season but was one of Brooklyn's better players in their first-round playoffs loss. That performance showed he has enough left in the tank to help a title contender.

ESPN released their first NBA Power Rankings for the 2022-23 season: way-too-early edition Friday morning, putting the Mavericks at fifth going into next season, the third team in the Western Conference. Tim MacMahon wrote of the Mavericks:
Quote:

The Mavs are confident that they will re-sign Jalen Brunson in the wake of their run to the West finals. He will likely again be Dallas' second-best player, behind Luka Doncic, as GM Nico Harrison is handcuffed by the Mavs being well into luxury tax territory with limited first-round picks to dangle in trade packages. The Mavs filled one major need by trading for high-scoring center Christian Wood a deal that will become official on draft night and are expected to target a rotation wing in free agency.

"Couple things worth noting about the Christian Wood era: He was a stand-up guy in an unbelievably tough two-season stretch, and he should flourish with the Mavs," said Houston Chronicle beat writer Jonathan Feigen after Wood was traded to Dallas.

Jalen Brunsons asking price may be too high for us. NY Knicks just hired his dad which might be appealing to him, he's a top shooter and nasty little defender. No sure what we could get in a sign and trade as his deal is up at the end of the year - unless we gave him the full Monty and then traded him, 5 years, $175m

NY has the 11 and 42 in the draft, not sure who the Knicks would throw into the mix . maybe Mitchell Robinson the 7' center or Julius Randle? I dont follow them so not sure the value of either

All in all, I dont see the Mavs trading him in a sign and trade. I think he stays here

Quinton Crawford joined the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff, sources told Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.

Turner was previously an assistant on Frank Vogel's staff with the Lakers, including for the 2020 NBA title run.

Marc Stein adds that Greg St. Jean will replace Igor Kokoskov on the front of Kidd's bench next season. Kokoskov moved to the Nets this offseason.

The Dallas Mavericks are coming off an impressive nine-win postseason, but they could be adding someone who has gotten all 16 wins before.

JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors reported this week that the Mavs are hosting a free-agent mini-camp this week with over 30 players in attendance. One of the most notable attendees is former No. 4 overall pick Dion Waiters.

Waiters, still only 30 years old, won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, averaging 11.9 points per game for them that season. Known for his scoring chutzpah, Waiters has not played in the NBA since his Lakers stint.

Although the Dallas Mavericks have always been viewed as the favorites to retain Jalen Brunson's services when free agency begins on June 30, that hasn't stopped rumors from brewing. The New York Knicks, who have long been fans of Brunson's game, went as far as hiring his dad, Rick Brunson, as an assistant coach in what many viewed as being a recruiting strategy. Now, they're reportedly in the process of trying to clear out enough cap space to offer Brunson a contract that is in the $25 million per year range.

Brunson is likely flattered by the Knicks' gestures, but it appears that New York could be wasting its time. Aside from just getting a much-deserved pay raise, Brunson wants to be in a winning situation. He is pretty much guaranteed both of those things by staying in Dallas, whereas the latter part of that would be a question mark in New York.

According to a report by Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, the Knicks might want to start moving on to other free agency plans.

"It does still sound like Dallas is by far the leader in the clubhouse to retain [Jalen Brunson]," said Fischer. "I've even heard that he has told former teammates and current teammates that it's basically like a done deal."

After becoming a full-time starting for coach Jason Kidd, and then helping lead the Mavs to the Western Conference finals as the team's second-best player next to Luka Doncic, Brunson should be able to have his cake and eat it too in Dallas. Although some might view a contract of potentially $25 million per year an overpay for Brunson, who is to say the 25-year-old won't continue to improve the same way he has every year since being drafted in 2018.

Tim MacMahon: Sources: Maxi Kleber remains a significant part of the Mavs' plans after the Christian Wood trade. His $9 million salary isn't guaranteed until July 4, but that is considered a formality.

Good pickup. maxi seems to pickup the team when he comes in

The Mavericks will sign Michigan State's Marcus Bingham to an Exhibit 10 contract, tweets Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

The seven-footer played four years for the Spartans and is an accomplished shot blocker, but didn't become a full-time starter until his senior season. He averaged 2.2 rejections per game this year, along with 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds.

An Exhibit 10 deal is a one-year, minimum-salary contract that counts toward a team's 20-man offseason roster limit, but doesn't count against the cap unless the player makes the regular season roster. Although it's not guaranteed, a player on an Exhibit 10 contract can earn a bonus of up to $50K if he's waived and then joins his team's G League affiliate.
