Incredibly clever.

Trump is initially picking ' soft' targets from which to gain rapid momentum in the building of factories ( with good jobs ) here in the US.

Because Taiwan WILL cooperate…… in addition to the threat of tariffs …..the business leaders won't risk a pissed off Trump pulling the US 6th fleet .

And without the protection of the US fleet , China rolls over Taiwan within months.

Best of all

The real threat is subtle . But the Taiwanese will instinctively know exactly what Trump is really messaging.

Watch for a favorable response from Taiwan within a month at most .

Taiwan business leaders are just as comfortable working with China as they are it's largest trading partner. This is an odd one to pick a trade war with, particularly on a day China planted a huge flag as a real threat to U.S. leadership in AI tech and future computing.

Because the Chinese not only want to take Taiwan….they want retribution from their longtime adversaries.

What long time adversaries?

China has donated its sphere of influence since the Bronze Age.

They literally called their area Tianxia, "all under Heaven". Everything that they cared to own they ruled (all else was barbarian nobodies….or so far away as to no matter)

One in a while some horse warriors would conquer the place but the get quickly absorbed into being Chinese.

And Japan dominated them that one time in the 20th century when it industrialized first.

But China has no long term enemies.

It's been the big dog forever over there.

You are far better than this.

The communist forces under Mao defeated the Nationalists after a long civil war.

The surviving Nationalists retreated to the island of Formosa ( Taiwan ). Where they continue to oppose the communists on the Chinese mainland.

Only the presence of the US Navy has kept Taiwan free in the past 60 years.

No way in the world will the Taiwanese risk a deadly invasion from communist China by pissing off Donald Trump.

So we are talking the political enemies of the Chinese Communist party

Fair enough. I thought we were talking about China and the Han people

The CCP has only been in power 70 years.

I doubt it will make it 150 years….and a failed invasion of Taiwan might just be the catalyst that brings it down.

It will end up a minor footnote in the 5,000 year history of China

My friend

You are all over the place.

Taiwan needs the US Navy to stand any chance of survival.

Trump wants the Taiwanese to build semi conductor factories in the US to create more jobs for Americans.

A smart position for Trump to take.

That's all I am stating….that's all that matters within this confines of Trumps latest comments.

Maybe

But just maybe you are overestimating the abilities of the Chinese

The PLA is not a traditional army. It's built for internal security control…not fighting and winning wars against peer competitors. And its leaders are always appointed by their political loyalty (not their military skill)

And Taiwan has had 70 years to prepare to repel and invasion.

[The PLA is not a traditional nation-state military. It is a part, and the armed wing, of the CCP and controlled by the party, not by the state. The Chinese have been massively re building their army , navy and Air Force over the last 10 years.

Taiwan would stand no chance alone against China.

The entire world knows this.

I am confident you do as well.

Building up….for internal control mostly and to protect the communist party.

30 years of military build up and they still only have two aircraft carriers (both diesel)

I think we all might be surprised at how poorly it might function in an actual war.

(Russia's poor performance in Ukraine for example)

I think Taiwan might do far better than people think. Especially if the USA funds the war and gives them material and economic resources

This really over simplifies the history of China. They have had long time enemies since the Bronze Age. Today they are just "other" Chinese. As the term Chinese really over simplifies the difference in ethnic populations within China.

They have not always controlled the area that is present day China. They also have historically controlled areas that are no longer present day China.

Their historical enemies may not have a separate country like say a 19th/20th century France vs Germany but to say they have never had any is just dismissive of the actual history of China.

China has such a vast and ancient history you have to simplify it just to discuss the topic and not take months on it

And interesting enough the PLA is mostly used to hold down those ethnic non-Han minorities like the Tibetans and the Uyghurs.

It's a military built for suppression and State control

ICE Chicago Field Office Director: "We're targeting the WORST first…this administration has taken the handcuffs off of us."

1) BIDEN ADMIN CULPABILITY: The viciousness of the criminal aliens being rounded up is staggering. Rap sheets a mile long of violent offenses, crimes against children. ICE has known exactly where these thugs are, but was prohibited from arresting them by the Biden admin. "The handcuffs are now off."

2) SAFETY AND SECURITY: These dangerous criminals are being removed in huge numbers from communities and neighborhoods, making America safer every time one of them is rounded up and deported. All of this could have been prevented, but now the problem is being addressed.

3) TRANSPARENCY. The video and images are being blasted everywhere across all media platforms. The TV hits are relentless, every day. ICE posts its arrest numbers to daily. ICE has nothing to hide.

4) HUMANIZING ICE PERSONNEL. This clip puts the ICE boots on the ground in front of the cameras to tell their stories. These officers are regular people, just trying to do their jobs to make the country safe. They are dads and moms and brothers and sisters. They are not faceless monsters going after women and children in churches and schools, as legacy media would have you believe.

Yes I agree its modernizing and getting bigger to try and project power in Asia (and other places)

But its still not a traditional military like the US Armed Forces.

Its primary focus is maintaining the Communist party in power

I did not make this fact up...its true

[The PLA is not a traditional nation-state military. It is a part, and the armed wing, of the CCP and controlled by the party, not by the state. The PLA's primary mission is the defense of the party and its interests.

In 2004, paramount leader Hu Jintao stated the mission of the PLA as:
  • The insurance of CCP leadership
  • The protection of the sovereignty, internal security, and national development of the People's Republic of China
  • Safeguarding the country's interests
  • Maintaining and safeguarding world peace]

The PLA also has massive corruption issues....the kind you would expect from a armed wing of a corrupt party

"Chinese military corruption cases serves as a reminder that a decades-long practice and culture of corruption continues to flourish within the PLA."

https://thediplomat.com/2024/12/can-china-ever-weed-out-corruption-in-its-military/

Now Contrast that mission with the mission of the United States Armed Forces

[The mission of the United States Armed Forces is to protect the country, defend the Constitution, and uphold national interests.]

None of this changes the only reality that matters.

China is building the strongest military in Asia and with it is expanding their dominance throughout the region. Not the least of which is the strategic South China Sea.

The Chinese are going to eventually invade Taiwan if Trump doesn't commit US forces to its protection.

Nothing else matters in this particular situation. Not labels, not what China did a thousand years ago.

So the Taiwanese will do what Trump demands in regards to developing US jobs.

End of discussion.

Nope

Its very much open to discussion and debate

The Communists in Beijing might very well not invade Taiwan at all....they have not done it for 70 years despite the saber rattling

And a big reason being they might not be able to pull it off....and they might be afraid they will be militarily defeated in such a operation and suffer a major humiliation at the hands of their old rivals in Taipei.

A military defeat by Taiwan would destabilize their regime at home and abroad.

https://www.cfr.org/article/why-china-would-struggle-invade-taiwan

[The Taiwan Strait, over ninety miles wide, is incredibly choppy, and due to two monsoon seasons and other extreme weather events, a seaborne invasion is only viable a few months out of the year.

Transporting hundreds of thousands of soldiers across the Taiwan Strait would take weeks and require thousands of ships. Each crossing would take hours, allowing Taiwan to target the ships, mass troops on potential landing sites, and erect barriers.

Even if China's military successfully established a beachhead on Taiwan, it would struggle to navigate the mountainous terrain to secure the island.

Taiwan's military, by contrast, has the advantage of knowing the land and terrain and how to defend it.]

Not end of discussion. If our intention is to take away the semi conductor industry from Taiwan, they are no longer a strategic ally, and doesn't need protection from US forces. They just as soon could become like Hong Kong at that point. Putting Tariffs on Taiwan is stupid when we have failed to even execute on plants that TSMC and others have tried here. Check out the boondoggle attempt going on in Arizona. What will happen is we'll just drive the global semiconductor market further to China.

We don't need tariffs to try to compete in that market. We need major labor and skill upgrades and reduced regulations. Without that this is just shooting ourselves in the foot by raising prices for American companies and driving a wedge between us and an ally to counter China.

**** Taiwan

American jobs, American lives come first.

If they want continued American protection…..they need to do as Trump demands.

The era of US generosity while we get screwed in return is over.

Trump is doing the exact right thing.

This really over simplifies the history of China. They have had long time enemies since the Bronze Age. Today they are just "other" Chinese. As the term Chinese really over simplifies the difference in ethnic populations within China.

China has such a vast and ancient history you have to simplify it just to discuss the topic and not take months on it

And interesting enough the PLA is mostly used to hold down those ethnic non-Han minorities like the Tibetans and the Uyghurs.

It's a military built for suppression and State control

Yes one does have to condense it to briefly cover it but that does not include dismissing that they had enemies in the past and still today, that they were not always the same size, etc.

China wants Taiwan back. However they will not invade for several reasons.

1. US (and whatever other countries would help) support
2. Don't want to lose trade during an invasion
3. And really a big if not biggest reason- While they have built a large military in terms of number of planes and ships they don't have the right types of planes or ships.

They have lots of inferior fighters. They have a lot of small vessels (like cutters, frigates, corvettes or whatever you want to call them) but not enough big ships and most importantly not enough support vessels needed for an invasion like landing craft, supply vessels, etc.
