US needs the ports of San Diego, Long Beach, and SF for the Pacific Fleet and commercial transport.

None of this changes the only reality that matters.

China is building the strongest military in Asia and with it is expanding their dominance throughout the region. Not the least of which is the strategic South China Sea.

The Chinese are going to eventually invade Taiwan if Trump doesn't commit US forces to its protection.

Nothing else matters in this particular situation. Not labels, not what China did a thousand years ago.

So the Taiwanese will do what Trump demands in regards to developing US jobs.

End of discussion.
Not end of discussion. If our intention is to take away the semi conductor industry from Taiwan, they are no longer a strategic ally, and doesn't need protection from US forces. They just as soon could become like Hong Kong at that point. Putting Tariffs on Taiwan is stupid when we have failed to even execute on plants that TSMC and others have tried here. Check out the boondoggle attempt going on in Arizona. What will happen is we'll just drive the global semiconductor market further to China.

We don't need tariffs to try to compete in that market. We need major labor and skill upgrades and reduced regulations. Without that this is just shooting ourselves in the foot by raising prices for American companies and driving a wedge between us and an ally to counter China.

Can we just stop, I mean Trump is not going to kill our relationship with Taiwan. They will build here and they will profit, as will Americans. It's clear this has been thought through.

Trump is doing the exact right thing.
You didn't look up what TSMC is doing in Arizona obviously. We aren't getting screwed by Taiwan anyway. And this isn't a binary result, tariffs = US jobs. In fact given the strategic nature of semiconductors in everything from phones, computing, and even weaponry, and the long horizon to even get production up and running, not to mention the raw material coordination required, it's more likely supply will shift to China and other markets, and higher prices will cost jobs. Again, we don't need tariffs to produce semiconductors in the US.

I like how Trump is using tariffs in the immigration battle. Straightforward with a tangible result. This one is misguided with potentially significant negative consequences, not to mention unnecessary. I think where this went awry is that in one of the last couple of budget continuing resolutions, there was a Taiwan business incentive package. Now cancelling that makes lots of sense. It's not warranted, and we can't afford it.

4. Actually enforcing the laws & thus proving the incompetence of the previous administration

This I don't get. If they were pardoned then they should be immediately released. No need for any slowing the process down.

It gives the fascists time to cover up some of their crimes, destroy evidence etc. Or maybe it's an act of spite because they want to maintain the gulags. The fascists are evil. This is just one more illustration.

That doesn't make any sense. The more the economy goes those things, the more workers in those areas will be needed, blue collar & white collar. This is one method that can start an economic boom.

I understood his point, but thanks. My question was unrelated to the specific point, and was more general in nature. As this thread evidences, we hear how much he disagrees with Trump quite often (some might even say, all the time). Thus, since he alleges he is conservative, I was curious if he ever has any positive thoughts on Trump's policies.

Moreover, as to his point, I think the good of the public as a whole outweighs the needs of a much smaller percentage of workers who will be affected by such policies.

Interestingly enough, I think the same could be asked of you, since you claim to be conservative.
Was the "/s" really necessary?

The 60 million figure is an estimate of the total deaths in WWII globally, all theaters, all countries. Yes, I've seen other estimates but this one seems closer to reality. The Soviet death toll was about 20 million. It's far less than 60 million, but still far larger than any other country. What is usually omitted is that a significant portion of those deaths can be attributed to Stalin's evil & ruthless dictatorship.

Trump really trashed the World Economic forum today. He simply told world leaders, get on the bus and get rich or get off the road entirely, cause you're about to get run over.

He was particularly interested in why the EU was so upside down in trade with the US to benefit the EU. Changes are coming. Hopefully this is the end of the European Union, which could mean the end of George Soros and his Open Society (aka One World Order)

The beginning of Populism around the world hopefully. Let the people go free!
Populism isn't what's needed. Bold "Americanism" is good, which Trump is projecting. History is full of the dangers of populism.

Like many "isms" it can be both positive & negative depending on how it's used and how far it goes. For example, simple patriotism is generally harmless but taken to extremes can become rabid nationalism which was the main cause of the First World War & very important in causing the Second.

Popularism is what gives Americanism its energy and its ability to mobilize the people to great projects while at the same time not forget the common man and his basic economic and human needs.

You just seem to want Great Power Empire stuff and hate the common man.

At heart you are an elitist
Mao and Pol Pot were populists as was Adolph Hitler. Maybe I've been at this long enough to know the only thing "common" about populism is its thirst for power, which always turns out poorly for the "common man".

And if having principles that fear the abuse of democracy and "popular sentiment" in the same manner our founders did makes me an elitist, then guilty as charged.

Theodore Roosevelt was a populist too. It depends on how it's used and how far it goes.

Communism and Fascism were literally futuristic-messianic movements that preached that a "woke" ideology elite would be the vanguard that would lead their societies to a future utopia.

No good examples in your fear of populism and the common man influencing his government

Not to mention it's not a dictatorship of the majority that you really fear (the Founding Fathers worry & their desire to have a Republic vs a Athenian style democracy)

You just seem to dislike common people and any programs/political movements that might help them

And are overly trusting of elites
Barack Obama was a populist if you need something local and recent. And he appealed to the "common man" specifically. Populism has elevated a wide range of ideologies. That's because it isn't a principle, it's a tactic. A tactic to manipulate masses of people primarily by leveraging grievance and emotion. It is one of the most powerful tools of the elite and power hungry.

Barack is more a Marxist than a populist but he was good at fooling many people into accepting his schtick.

I'll give you an example. I am a historian, especially of Dallas, the Cowboys and Dallas sports scene.

The 1952 NFL Dallas Texans

They were only around for less than one season. They went bankrupt and the franchise was returned to the league along with all their equipment and uniforms. The end, the league washed its hands of them

The next season, the Baltimore Colts were awarded a BRAND NEW franchise that had nothing to do with the Texans. The Colts wanted nothing to do with the Texans franchise. They owed a lot of people, lots of money. They signed a lot of the old Texans players as they were new and had zero players. And the Texan players had little choice for a new team. However, at least 10 players went to other teams.

I knew this, and contacted the NFL, who agreed with what I stated above, in writing.

I corrected Wiki. Someone came in after me and rewrote that the Texans became the Colts, with both players, contracts and equipment going to Baltimore. And they did that not once, but three times. Even with me showing the comments directly from the NFL.
