Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is railing against freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Why? It's exposing how many dangerous criminal illegal aliens are being arrested in her city. She's especially upset that Bill Melugin of Fox News is embedded with ICE and getting all of it on video and then sharing his coverage online and on air.

China is building the strongest military in Asia and with it is expanding their dominance throughout the region. Not the least of which is the strategic South China Sea.

The Chinese are going to eventually invade Taiwan if Trump doesn't commit US forces to its protection.

Nothing else matters in this particular situation. Not labels, not what China did a thousand years ago.

So the Taiwanese will do what Trump demands in regards to developing US jobs.

Not end of discussion. If our intention is to take away the semi conductor industry from Taiwan, they are no longer a strategic ally, and doesn't need protection from US forces. They just as soon could become like Hong Kong at that point. Putting Tariffs on Taiwan is stupid when we have failed to even execute on plants that TSMC and others have tried here. Check out the boondoggle attempt going on in Arizona. What will happen is we'll just drive the global semiconductor market further to China.

We don't need tariffs to try to compete in that market. We need major labor and skill upgrades and reduced regulations. Without that this is just shooting ourselves in the foot by raising prices for American companies and driving a wedge between us and an ally to counter China.

American jobs, American lives come first.

If they want continued American protection…..they need to do as Trump demands.

The era of US generosity while we get screwed in return is over.


Trump is doing the exact right thing.
You didn't look up what TSMC is doing in Arizona obviously. We aren't getting screwed by Taiwan anyway. And this isn't a binary result, tariffs = US jobs. In fact given the strategic nature of semiconductors in everything from phones, computing, and even weaponry, and the long horizon to even get production up and running, not to mention the raw material coordination required, it's more likely supply will shift to China and other markets, and higher prices will cost jobs. Again, we don't need tariffs to produce semiconductors in the US.

I like how Trump is using tariffs in the immigration battle. Straightforward with a tangible result. This one is misguided with potentially significant negative consequences, not to mention unnecessary. I think where this went awry is that in one of the last couple of budget continuing resolutions, there was a Taiwan business incentive package. Now cancelling that makes lots of sense. It's not warranted, and we can't afford it.
The stock market disagrees with those worrying about this tariff. TSMC investors aren't concerned, and Taiwan isn't concerned. Only blip they've taken is due to the China AI.
It's interconnected and not instant. TSMC is already attempting to build a factory here, but in classic entitled America fashion, we're screwing it up. The AI blip was driven by the significant cost difference the China chip arrays have over those produced in places like Taiwan, further exacerbating the ill guided decision to add more cost to American companies in the sector.
You are joking? You think for an industry that is so heavily reliant on factories that cost upwards of tens of billions that the stock market hasn't reacted? OK, I disagree, the stock market certainly would have the risk of Trump hurting Taiwan factored in, and clearly investors consider the risk negligible because there's not even a blip.
Tech down again today with specific concerns of Trump admin impacting companies like Nvidia. It's not priced in yet, and won't until they see if he goes through with it.

And thanks for proving my point on the necessary investments for these plants and the long term nature of this type of shift. The CHIPS act was signed a few years ago and already commits tens of Billions of dollars to subsidize semiconductor production. Why do we need tariffs?
