Binged The Beast in Me with Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys. Pretty good ... predicable but still fun in a dark way.

Finished Stranger Things. Final season was definitely weakest in my opinion. They went all in on special effects and forgot about the story and dialogue. Not the worst ending to a tv show though

I have no interest in the final season.

It's hard to land these complex, muti-national, multi-universe stories.

I think a lot of these start out with maybe half a season thought out but get so big they really don't have a way to tell a cohesive story for five seasons.

'Night Manager' is back on Prime after a long hiatus. Still Tom Hiddleston back as the Night Mgr. Hugh Laurie was sent off to die badly at the hands of some bad Middle Easterners at the end of S1 back in 2016. Won't tell you if he somehow gets back into S2, but it's good and S3 is already in production.

Fun!

While I agree that this season of Landman is awful, I am enjoying the LWNJs losing their mind. Someone actually on ShaggyBevo accused Sheridan of being "political."

It's just the lack of self-awareness of these LWNJs that watch thousands of leftist-driven shows daily and lose their mind at an extremely mild moderate point.

Regardless, it's terrible and will be shocked if this does not end Sheridan's career. Not literally but his star definitely has faded - zero desire to engage in any other of his crap.

Not yet but Damon and Affleck went on Joe Rogan and talked about it. Sounds interesting and based on a true story.

Side note but they brought up some interesting points.

- Netflix instructs all their writers to write like no one is paying attention. Restate the plot 3-4x as it's unfolding. Hello new season of Stranger Things.

- When Damon was doing movies like Bourne. Action films typically had 3 major set pieces with rising tension to spring each set piece. The final being the grand finale epic. Netflix puts one in the first 5 minutes. Their algorithm says viewers will move on if not.

- with smaller screens they can save money shipping off background effects to East Asia for $2-3 an hour vs paying US or European graphics people big bucks like Christopher Nolan or Denis Villeneuve do. Average viewer doesn't really notice or simply doesn't care.

- Affleck discussed the math (I've also heard Vince Vaughn discuss this). Historically you shoot a $25M film, it's also marketed for $25M, and then you split proceeds with theaters so need to make $100M for a truly profitable film. DVDs allowed a second life for action and comedies to recoup anything not made during the box office run. This doesn't exist anymore. Filmmaking is in a new age and many still adjusting.

- Damon and Affleck both understand that for the average film goer a $20 ticket is expensive and you can pay $20 a month for an entire library of content and watch from home on an affordable large flat screen TV. This can allow for cheaper films to be made (technology is cheaper and less marketing spend) which can lead to more risk taking and less Avengers 17.

- Damon and Affleck started a production company and have implemented a bonus system for how the film performs to divvy out to the blue collar workers behind the cameras. Trying to keep quality people in the business and give well deserved recognition for people just as important to films as the people saying the lines.

Don't movie production in the U.S. have incredibly favorable tax structures, i.e. big difference between book profits and cash flow?

AI should revolutionize the movie industry - no real need for actors or crew - it can all be digitally created very quickly.
boykin_spaniel

Tax credits are frequently sold to attract studios to shoot movies in certain areas or like Georgia build an entire industry.

I think people will still want actual people creating movies. AI will for sure help reduce cost and speed up post production.

Keep in mind the tax is primarily at the state & local level .... this is why California is not used like it once was
boykin_spaniel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That is correct. Film and television credits come from states. Energy, affordable housing, environmental projects, etc can come from states and federal. California got cocky and Georgia and Chicago swooped in with nice incentives. Also doesn't hurt the blue collar side of the business that it's cheaper to live in the ATL suburbs and exurbs than LA so if talent goes out there it then also becomes easier to shoot there.

Things are changing for sure. Not sure if AI will fully replace actors though. Not sure the public will accept it

We recently passed a bill in Texas worth many millions

Texas' 2025 film incentive efforts culminated in the passage of Senate Bill 22 (SB 22), significantly boosting the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program (TMIIIP) with $300 million per biennium (totaling $1.5 billion through 2035)**, increasing grant percentages, making smaller films eligible for more, and adding incentives for rural/faith-based/veteran-inclusive productions, creating a major long-term investment to attract film & TV.
Key Provisions of SB 22:
  • Funding Increase: Boosts funding to $300 million per biennium (every two years) through 2035, a historic commitment.
  • Expanded Grants: Increases the base grant percentage for qualified spending, with larger rebates (up to 25%) for projects spending $1.5 million or more.
  • New Bonus Incentives: Adds extra percentages for shooting in rural areas, historic sites, or employing veterans (5% of crew), and for faith-based projects.
  • Long-Term Stability: Guarantees funding for a decade, offering stability to producers.
  • Effective Date: The program began accepting applications for projects starting after September 1, 2025.
Impact & Goals:
  • Economic Growth: Aims to create jobs and drive significant economic returns for the state, with projections showing high ROI.
  • "Texas is the New Hollywood": Aligns with efforts to make Texas a leading film and TV production hub, attracting major productions.
How to Apply:
  • Producers must submit an inquiry through the Texas Film Commission's website and follow their online application process, detailing estimated Texas spending and project specifics

Brothers Sun is interesting. One of my favorites.

Fallout if you know the game, although even if you don't it has a good cast. Can't go wrong with Ella in jumpsuit. Very Quirky.
