Norman Finkelstein: Before we get into this conversation, I do want to acknowledge that [last week] President Biden announced a significant revision in US policy towards Israel. He stated that the United States would not make available certain weapons as Israel launches a ground assault on Rafah. There's no doubt in my mind that this decision was made primarily because of the student movement that began a few weeks ago. Those young people courageously and consistently went out day after day and put their futures on the line for the people of Gaza. This should weigh very heavily on the conscience of those university presidents contemplating suspending and expelling those students.

Norman Finkelstein: When Trotsky gave advice to his followers in Spain during the Spanish civil war, he said that in a revolutionary period, political consciousness changes very rapidly. What yesterday seemed impossible today seems possible, because the worldview of the masses, so to speak, has changed. So Trotsky would say that you have to constantly be alert and attuned to the public consciousness, and change your slogans accordingly.

Quotes are from an interview in The Guardian covering student protests over Gaza.

I usually label them as fascists but often they do take it to Nazi-like extremes, especially when it comes to Israel and the Jews. Sadly, they might be strongest in some of our universities. Thankfully, Trump is going after them for their violations of civil rights laws.

Israel claims to have evidence, in the form of video, showing this dude participating in rocket attacks, and claims to have warned him not to continue to stay in the area.

Haven't seen the evidence yet, but would agree this isn't a good look for Israel. They better have some evidence of what they claim.

Better yet, they should show the evidence against all of the 240+ Palestinian journalists who have been killed since October 2023.

There is pretty well-documented evidence of Hamas fighters calling themselves "journalists" for reasons such as these - trying to make it appear as if Israel is targeting journalists as opposed to militants involved in the conflict. The question is, was the Al Jazeera reporter one of them?

Actually pretty poorly documented.

Quote:

Israel has a longstanding, documented pattern of accusing journalists of being terrorists without providing any credible proof.

"Israel is murdering the messengers," said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. "Israel wiped out an entire news crew. It has made no claims that any of the other journalists were terrorists. That's murder. Plain and simple."

"It is no coincidence that the smears against al-Sharif -- who has reported night and day for Al Jazeera since the start of the war -- surfaced every time he reported on a major development in the war, most recently the starvation brought about by Israel's refusal to allow sufficient aid into the territory," Qudah said, adding that the famine has been independently corroborated by aid workers and medics, despite Israel's refusal to let foreign reporters into Gaza.

Al-Sharif had been one of Al Jazeera's best-known reporters in Gaza since October 2023, and one of several journalists whom Israel had previously alleged were members of Hamas, without providing evidence.

Orwellian disinformation - color me shocked. UN redefining starvation to fit anti-Jewish narrative.

Fascists going to fascist.

https://freebeacon.com/israel/un-backed-famine-watchdog-quietly-changed-standards-easing-way-to-declare-famine-in-gaza/

The U.N.-affiliated watchdog group that recently declared a "worst-case scenario of famine" in Gaza quietly changed one of its key reporting metrics while doing so, making it easier to formally declare that there is a famine in the Hamas-controlled territory.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)a network of Western governments, the United Nations, and nonprofit groupsdetermined in a July 29 report "the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip," claiming that "mounting evidence shows that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths." Media outlets like the New York Times, NPR, CNN, and ABC News relied on the IPC report to claim that Israeli policies have led to mass starvation, with the Times stating that "months of severe aid restrictions imposed by Israel on the territory" have caused a famine "across most of Gaza."

Israel bombards Gaza City as UK and allies demand action against 'unfolding famine'

BBC News

Gaza City has come under intense air attack, the territory's Hamas-run civil defence agency has said, as Israeli forces prepare to launch an operation to take over the city.

Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman, said the residential areas of Zeitoun and Sabra had been hit for three days causing "massive destruction to civilian homes", with residents unable to recover the dead and injured.

Meanwhile the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and Japan issued a statement saying "famine is unfolding in front of our eyes" and urged action to "reverse starvation".

They demanded "immediate, permanent and concrete steps" to facilitate the entry of aid to Gaza. Israel denies there is starvation in Gaza.

It has accused UN agencies of not picking up aid at the borders and delivering it.

The joint statement also demanded an end to the use of lethal force near aid distribution sites and lorry convoys, where the UN says more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed, mostly by the Israeli military.

Separately, the World Health Organization on Tuesday appealed to Israel to let it stock medical supplies to deal with a "catastrophic" health situation before it seizes control of Gaza City.

"We all hear about 'more humanitarian supplies are allowed in' - well it's not happening yet, or it's happening at a way too low a pace," said Rik Peeperkorn, the agency's representative in the Palestinian territories.

"We want to as quickly stock up hospitals," he added. "We currently cannot do that. We need to be able to get all essential medicines and medical supplies in."

Israel's war cabinet voted on Monday to take over Gaza City, a move condemned at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council later that day. On Tuesday the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was "at the beginning of a new state of combat".

A group of five armed terrorists were killed after they were caught posing as members of the World Central Kitchen humanitarian group in central Gaza, the Israeli military said Tuesday.
Video from Deir al-Balah, one of the few cities largely spared by the 21-month Mideast war, shows a group of men in bright vests traveling in a vehicle marked with the WCK's emblem.
"The terrorists deliberately attached the [WCK] emblem and wore yellow vests in an attempt to disguise their activities and avoid being targeted, cynically exploiting the status and trust given to aid organizations," the Israel Defense Force said in a statement.

Netanyahu Says He Backs 'Greater Israel' - Drawing Outrage From Arab States

"Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has unleashed fresh controversy and anger among Arab countries and leaders by suggesting a huge land expanse of Israel's borders in an interview he gave to i24 News.

In the newly published interview he said he is on a "historic and spiritual mission" and expressed strong attachment to the vision of a Greater Israel, which is a longtime reference to Israel encompasing parts of Jordan, Egypt and Syria - along with the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip."

Israel gave the Sinai back to Egypt in the Camp David Accords. Syria will never get the Golan Heights back. It's too strategically important and before 1967 they often used it to lob missiles at Israel. Israel cannot return it to them.

Geopolitical realities will almost always outweigh the preening of those who think they know better than the people who live there.
