Walking Corpses: Israel's Blockade of Aid Starves Gazans, Aid Groups Say
Julianne MCShane

Two months ago, a coalition of aid groups warned that Israel's war on Gaza--and restrictions on food entering the strip--would cause mass starvation in Gaza imminently. Now, it has arrived, according to officials and aid groups.

On Wednesday, more than 100 aid groups issues a statement outlining just how dire the situation has become for Palestinians as doctors report record rates of malnutrition as a result of Israel's aid blockade. "As the Israeli government's siege starves the people of Gaza, aid workers are now joining the same food lines, risking being shot just to feed their families," the letter states. "[H]umanitarian organisations are witnessing their own colleagues and partners waste away before their eyes."

The signatories of the letter--which include Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam International, and Save the Children--urged governments to "open all land crossings; restore the full flow of food, clean water, medical supplies, shelter items, and fuel through a principled, UN-led mechanism; end the siege, and agree to a ceasefire now."

As of Tuesday, more than a dozen children and adults had died from hunger within 24 hours, according to the UN, which cited reports from local health authorities. The World Food Program (WFP) says that nearly one in three people is going days without eating in Gaza and that 90,000 women and children need urgent malnutrition treatment.

The latest developments come two months after the launch of the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a US-backed Israeli aid distribution system that aid groups have decried as inefficient and dangerous. They say the four distribution sites, all under the control of the Israeli military, are difficult to access and do not distribute enough food. Israeli officials have claimed the system is necessary to prevent Hamas from interfering with food distribution, though officials have not provided evidence that this was ever happening in a coordinated way.

Gazans who do make it to the distribution sites often fear death. Harrowing reports have emerged of hordes of Palestinians being gunned down and killed at the sites. On Sunday, the WFP reported that a crowd of people seeking food from its convoy in northern Gaza were shot and killed by "Israeli tanks, snipers and other gunfire." The organization's director of emergencies called the incident "one of the greatest tragedies we've seen for our operations in Gaza and elsewhere while we're trying to work." Subsequent reports suggested that at least 80 Palestinians were killed in that incident and at least 95 people injured, and that 40 others were killed in other attacks near aid points in Rafah and Khan Younis over the weekend.

This week, the Untied Nations reported that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military since the new aid system debuted, nearly 800 of whom were killed near the US-backed aid sites, and the rest of whom were killed near UN and other humanitarian groups' aid convoys.

Aid groups say that they have supplies to support those in need, but that Israeli forces are preventing them from entering Gaza. Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said in a post on X on Thursday that the UN agency has "equivalent of 6,000 loaded trucks of food & medical supplies in Jordan and Egypt," and called for "unrestricted & uninterrupted humanitarian assistance." He quoted a colleague in Gaza who he said told him, "People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive, they are walking corpses."

Lazzarini added that the agency's health workers "are surviving on one small meal a day, often just lentils, if at all," and "increasingly fainting from hunger while at work."

"When caretakers cannot find enough to eat," he added, "the entire humanitarian system is collapsing."

News organizations have also warned that the few journalists left in Gaza are also facing starvation. On Thursday, Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Associated Press, BBC News, and Reuters issued a joint statement saying they are "desperately concerned for our journalists in Gaza, who are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families." Earlier this week, a group of AFP journalists issued a statement outlining the dire conditions facing the ten who remain in Gaza: "We watch their situation worsen. They are young and losing strength. Most no longer have physical capacity to travel the enclave and do their jobs," says the statement, translated from its original French.

The statement quotes a post the group's photographer, Bashar, 30, put on Facebook over the weekend: "I no longer have the strength to work in media. My body is weak and I cannot work." His brother died of hunger over the weekend, the statement says.

You guys are suckers falling for this Hamas/Anti-semitism propaganda. The vast majority in Gaza are not starving. Pure propaganda to make Israel look bad. And too many on this site that fall for it.

How many starving to death is ok with you?

The answer is zero. That's not the issue at hand. It's who imbeciles like you are blaming for the starvation. This is 100% on the Jesus hating Muslims of Hamas. They use the Gazans as fighting shields in schools and hospitals and are instrumental in making sure aid does not get to the Gazans because their agenda is not giving a **** about the people. It's all about destroying Israel. Are you a Free Palestine idiot?

The jews are the ones who hate Jesus and they are also the ones that are committing a genocide. Apprix 60k Gazans have died so far and i'm sure Israel intends to kill a whole lot more if they arent forced to stop. The worst part is the American taxpayer gets to fund all of this bc our entire govt is bought off.

It's mind boggling how many idiots like you exist in this country. So you think Hamas has no part in this mess? Seriously? The pieces of **** that started this war by invading Israel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these Godless animals are still holding hostages (dead and alive). It is so sad and scary that people like you support Palestine at the expense of Israel. Thank God you're bumbling idiots lost this election.

Earlier this week, a group of AFP journalists issued a statement outlining the dire conditions facing the ten who remain in Gaza: "We watch their situation worsen.

The statement quotes a post the group's photographer, Bashar, 30, put on Facebook over the weekend: "I no longer have the strength to work in media. My body is weak and I cannot work." His brother died of hunger over the weekend, the statement says.

What a bizarre thing to ask. I'm talking about children dying, and you're taking about donating to terrorists.

So, as usual, you talk it ...but dont walk it.

There are many organizations that feed hungry children.

Yesterday alone ,my wife and I contributed to 3 seperate non profits.

But you.........

Good for you! I'm honestly shocked. People as hateful as you generally donate very minimal amounts. Did you find food shelters that exclude blacks? I know you said you don't want to go places with lots of blacks.

Why would you want to argue about this being genocide or not?

Clearly it's a matter of perspective. Almost nobody saying it's not genocide lost a friend or family member to Israel or Hamas. Almost everyone saying it's genocide has skin in the game.

It really doesn't help to have the argument, because everyone thinks x civilian deaths is appropriate in y type of war. Those variable just vary substantially. Once the line is crossed, genocide may be a fitting term.

For me, and I haven't done this, I'd have to determine how many Palestinians were in Gaza, on average, while most of the civilian deaths happened. Then consider the nature of the conflict, and finally make up a percentage that seems reasonable. Totally arbitrary, but a basic attempt at being rational.

For some though, they might have seen the deaths first hand. Ration might not enter the picture.

Again, even if you buy into the "killing children daily" narrative, that's not genocide. You could argue war crimes possibly.

You should just Google it. Or is your point that children should die of starvation until they are released?

You know the hostages are being held by terrorists, don't you? Why would the actions of terrorists dictate how many starve to death?

This isn't Israel bombing an apartment and killing 30 innocents because 1 Hamas leader is hiding amongst them, it's hundreds of thousands not getting enough food because Israel is blocking it.

Even dear leader says they are starving to death, and Israel should let the aid in. Is it easier to be pro food for innocents, if Trump said it?

And by the way, since we started the discussion, Israel has agreed to let more aid in. Hopefully it's enough. All those playing the whataboutism card should just shut up. Everyone but you is on the same page. No need to starve people to death.

Several family members of hostages held by Hamas accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday of knowingly condemning the hostages to death, after reports indicated the premier is prioritizing keep forces on the Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt over bringing back Israel's captives.

In a statement outside IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, relatives said, "Netanyahu and his partners in the cabinet decided to torpedo the [hostage-ceasefire] deal due to the Philadelphi spin, and as such are knowingly condemning the hostages to death."

Einav Zangauker, mother of Hamas hostage Matan Zangkauer, said Netanyahu's actions are "a crime against the people, against the State of Israel and against Zionism. Netanyahu is not Mr. Security, he is Mr. Death. He is undermining the deal in cold blood."

The statements came after Netanyahu reportedly told ministers that he views keeping an Israeli presence in the Corridor as taking precedence over saving the hostages held by Hamas.

UN Special Committee finds Israel's warfare methods in Gaza consistent with genocide, including use of starvation as weapon of war
14 November 2024

NEW YORK -- Israel's warfare in Gaza is consistent with the characteristics of genocide, with mass civilian casualties and life-threatening conditions intentionally imposed on Palestinians there, the UN Special Committee to investigate Israeli practices said in a new report released today.

"Since the beginning of the war, Israeli officials have publicly supported policies that strip Palestinians of the very necessities required to sustain life -- food, water, and fuel," the Committee said. "These statements along with the systematic and unlawful interference of humanitarian aid make clear Israel's intent to instrumentalise life-saving supplies for political and military gains."

Covering the period from October 2023 to July 2024, the report examines developments across the occupied Palestinian territory and the occupied Syrian Golan but focuses on the catastrophic impact of the current war in Gaza on the rights of Palestinians.

"Through its siege over Gaza, obstruction of humanitarian aid, alongside targeted attacks and killing of civilians and aid workers, despite repeated UN appeals, binding orders from the International Court of Justice and resolutions of the Security Council, Israel is intentionally causing death, starvation and serious injury, using starvation as a method of war and inflicting collective punishment on the Palestinian population," the Committee said.

Then consider the nature of the conflict, and finally make up a percentage that seems reasonable. Totally arbitrary, but a basic attempt at being rational.

For some though, they might have seen the deaths first hand. Ration might not enter the picture.

The sheer amount of utter nonsense in that post is its best defense against response.

Well your dear leader, the Liar in Chief has finally gotten it through his thick skull that That monster Bibi and his government is responsible for the genocide just like it took him being played for a fool by Putin. He said so today for the first time

This is not a genocide.

yes it is. sorry

Prove it Jr.

Liberals like to play word games. That's fascism. That's genocide. That's patriarchy. That's late stage capitalism. It's all nonsense. Conservatives do it, too, but not quite as often.

Think things, not words, if you want to have any precision of thought and reasoning.

That's my frustration: you can't have an honest discussion when debating propaganda.

But but but TRANSPHOBIA. And Hitler. And Nazis. That's *literally* violence. [insert noise of Charlie Brown teacher]

Are you able to coherently articulate why, or are you yet another zombie zealot who monkeyed all over a keyboard?
