They're up there. Their two night show at the old Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum in like 2005 or 6 was amazing.
Saw Jim James solo at the Dallas HOB recently. Incredible show. His recent solo album is really good.

I highly recommend a book called "All The Songs" that discusses every song recorded by the Beatles. It tells the genesis of each song, who wrote it, who sang lead, who sang backup, who played which instruments, who was the producer and who was the engineer and recording tidbits. The Lennon-McCartney debate is almost an impossible question to answer. And yes, when someone is asking who the best Beatle is/was it is a Lennon-McCartney debate...George Harrison was massively talented and one of the most underrated musicians of all-time, but his catalog simply does not stack up.
I am a slight McCartney lean, although I think Lennon is the "cooler" answer. It is kind of funny, if you ask me what I think the 10 best Beatles songs are I would guess 7 or so would be songs that were primarily composed by Lennon..."In My Life", "Strawberry Fields", "A Day in the Life", etc. But McCartney's diversity as a song writer simply astounds me. The same guy that wrote "Back in the USSR" wrote "Elenor Rigby"? The same guy that wrote "Mother Nature's Son" wrote "Oh Darling"? The same guy that wrote "Honey Pie" wrote "Helter Skelter"? I'm sure I'll get slaughtered for even bringing up "Honey Pie", and it is not even in my top 100 favorite McCartney tracks because I don't listen to 1930s music hall/ragtime music, but I can acknowledge how incredible it is that he was able to write good songs in pretty much any genre he wanted. McCartney is the most talented and diverse musician of the 20th century.
Paul was a pop icon, John was a rocker, sometimes darker than others and George may have written some of the best songs the group laid down. And Ringo was a solid drummer.

The Beatles were the right band at the right time and thank goodness they were...as they paved the way for true greatness from Britain that followed. While I think the Beatles sound leaned too pop for my taste, I can certainly appreciate why they were so beloved. However, I don't think they came close to creating a rock album that holds up to the Stones' Exile on Mainstreet or Let it Bleed.
If I could go back and see a band live that I never got to see live...it would be Zeppelin. They were significant for so many reasons...and I would have loved to see Plant on stage. My favorite Zeppelin album is probably Houses of the Holy...have always been partial to that one, although a tough choice.
Van Morrison is the standard, for me. True greatness.

George Harrison was great. He wrote two of my favorite songs in My Sweet Lord and Here Comes the Sun
Was anyone else at Baylor when the Spin was there? Talk about nostalgia. Those parties/shows were a lot of fun.
