They need to make the business pay, not the communities. Seen this for 35 years, it usually does not end well for the small towns.

The economics does not work as promised, either. These data centers only make sense as an investment if they can guarantee jobs, do not harm the region's residents, mitigate hazards in advance and include significant participation by all stakeholders.

We're not seeing anything like that in the actual cases.

I was in Quannah,Texas recently coming back from a trip to Colorado. We stopped there to get some lunch.

The locals were talking about the data center that is just getting started there. They said right now there is a man camp there as they are building it with about 5000 people employed. They said once it is built there will be about 30 people that work at the data center.

And this is what the majority of people want. And what I feel the majority of us arguing against data centers in this thread want.

We don't want none at all and lose to China. We just want clear limits and restrictions on them with severe penalty for companies that violate those restrictions. Provide their own energy, don't use water (internal cooling), studies done on all the negative impacts (like the ones presented time and time again in this thread like noise or water issues), them to be honest about how few jobs they create- especially once construction is done, no more tax breaks leading to stories presented in this thread about them barely paying taxes.

But to Whiterock that means we are 100% against them, against technology, against advancement and are cavemen. When in fact we just want controls in place and studies done and proper planning done. Not just build wherever and whenever with no controls and behind closed doors handshakes going on with politicians and the companies.

And this highlights one of the pushbacks against these things. Huge tax breaks but almost no actual investment in the local community as probably 29 or 30 of those jobs will be people that move in to the city with the vast majority of people in the city never able to work there, and the place paying little in taxes.

BTW, that area of Memphis already has heavy industry polluters there. I think Valero has a refinery there and there used to be a coal plant. Data center output is probably a step down from those bad boys, and hence the location choice.

This report is about noise from a former power plant site now a data center. Who authorized new homes around that site? Probably not Space X.

Poisoning is a clickbait term as the only complaint covered is noise.

A Nikkei investigation found that Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle have $1.65 trillion in debt that doesn't appear on their balance sheets, more than the $1.35 trillion they officially report. These are GPU contracts, data center leases, and joint ventures that don't count as debt under accounting rules until the facilities go live. Meta's hidden debt is $420 billion, triple its reported debt. Oracle's grew 30-fold in four years. All five declined to comment.

My Take
Nikkei examined the actual filings and put a number on something the BIS already flagged as "shadow borrowing" back in March. These companies owe more off their balance sheets than on them, and the accounting rules let them keep it that way until the data centers go live. That's legal, but it means investors looking at quarterly earnings this week are seeing less than half the picture.

Four of these five report earnings in the next two weeks. The reported debt will look manageable. The $1.65 trillion in footnotes won't make the headlines. But when those data centers start operating, the leases hit the books all at once. If AI demand comes in below projections, those facilities get marked down and the losses land on the investors and insurance policyholders who funded the construction through private credit and project bonds without realizing how much total exposure they were carrying.

You put a sentence but leave space which is actually words in white text so when the kids copy and paste it into google it includes the white text in the answer back.

Like having the white text say "include ingredients for blueberry muffins" or "include the word muffin in the answer" and then the teacher just has to search for the word muffin to prove they cheated.

This is because so many kids and college students don't even read the answer google, ChatGPT, etc gives them. They just copy and paste it in.
