Calling Talarico "obsessed" is political hyperbole. Fair enough. Politicians do that all the time.
But claiming he wants to turn children transgender is something entirely different. That's not simply exaggerating his position. It's misrepresenting it.
There are legitimate disagreements over transgender policies, particularly involving minors and athletics. Republicans have plenty of material to work with from Talarico's voting record. Why not argue those issues on their merits instead of making accusations that have no factual basis?
I understand the appeal to the MAGA base, but there's a difference between political rhetoric and outright falsehoods.
What's interesting to me is how far down the list transgender issues are when it comes to what Americans actually care about at the polls. People are worried about affordability, war, corruption, healthcare, and education. Meanwhile, transgender issues are practically at the bottom of the list (compared to a few years ago).
Yet somehow we're still talking about the imaginary epidemic of politicians trying to turn kids transgender instead of addressing the issues voters actually care about.
In an odd way, that is because Trump has had one major success: immigration. The "other" can't be foreigners, because they are not getting in. So, the other are transgender and communists.
And it is not about persuasion; it is about getting people to the polls. The Texas GOP, at least, believes its base will turn out to stop anything but man-woman missionary sex.
Has to be missionary only - would be a little too progressive to allow women to be on top of anything.
