1664: Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam to the British who did not have to fire a single shot and the town was renamed New York.

1900: The worst natural disaster in U.S. history struck Galveston in the form of a hurricane that claimed 6,000 lives.

1935: Sen. Huey Long of Louisiana was shot by an enemy. He died shortly thereafter. He was a flamboyant popular politician with presidential ambitions (FDR saw him as a threat).

1941: The Germans began the siege of Leningrad. It would last two and a half years, claim hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides but ultimately fail.

The Baylor Lariat was the only morning newspaper in Texas to have first day coverage of this. The paper normally went to the printer by midnight or earlier. That night we were having all kinds of production problems (I was a grad assistant) and ran much later. Just as things were coming together, the Mao story lit up the AP wire, and we were able to insert it.

1608: Capt. John Smith was chosen to lead the Jamestown settlement in Virginia. His leadership would help them survive but he also made enemies.

1776: Nathan Hale volunteered to spy on the British behind enemy lines.

1813: The first defeat of a British naval squadron in history at the Battle of Lake Erie. The War of 1812 was a mixed bag for the U.S. with dramatic victories, mostly at sea, and stunning defeats. (Kinda like Baylor football...)

1833: Pres. Andrew Johnson used executive authority to remove all federal funds from the Second Bank of the United States, effectively killing the institution. Although it would take some time, he had won the "bank war."

1977: The French used the guillotine for the last time, to execute a convicted murderer.

2001: AL Qaeda terrorists hijacked 4 planes and flew them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. The 4th plane was headed to Washington, with the White House or Capitol its likely target, but the heroic passengers of United Flight 93 stormed the cockpit and forced it to crash into a Pennsylvania field killing no others.

1862: Bloodiest day in American history, the Battle of Antietam. It was a confusing battle but in the end, Gen. George McClellan's Union forces prevailed over Gen. Robert E. Lee's Confederates who were forced to retreat. McClellan's failures during and after the campaign led Pres. Abraham Lincoln to relieve of his command for the second and final time. Also, this nominal victory led to the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

1939: The meaning of the Nazi-Soviet Non-aggression Pact in August became clear when the Soviets invaded Poland. The alliance between Hitler & Stalin had included secret protocols to divide Eastern Europe between them.

1976: NASA revealed the first space shuttle, Enterprise. It was inspired by the film franchise Star Trek but never flew.

1978: Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachim Begin signed the Camp David Accords in what is probably the most significant step towards Middle East peace. Egypt formally recognized Israel, the first Arab state to do so, and Israel returned the Sinai peninsula which had been taken in the 1967 Six Day War. The goal of a broader regional peace remains elusive.

9/19/97 Rich Mullins killed in a vehicle accident .... wasn't wearing his seat belt! I remember hearing the news ... and felt like that became the day the music died to me ("American Pie") .... except I do rennet my eyes filling with tears!
