If the republicans weren't so spineless, these actions by the democrats would be the start of a slippery slope. The democrats know the republicans in power don't have the intestinal fortitude to take similar actions on political enemies. I'm not a fan of trump, but this is exactly why they are so scared of trump - he actually is as reckless as the democrats are when he comes to maintaining democracy and has the guts to take similar actions they would take.
They investigated Hillary for essentially the same thing Trump is being investigated for now,
Not even close to the same thing!

HRC had Special Access Program level data. SAPs "control access, distribution, and provide protection for sensitive classified information that exceeds" need-to-know basis.

She ordered her staff to physically destroy hard drives with hammers. Thousands upon thousands of emails were destroyed.

You support tyranny and this is your way of coping. Period.

Not raid a former President for inconsequential documents, especially after pleading guilty to fabrication of evidence (Clinesmith) towards that same President's campaign.

I guess we could all just sit back, not vote at all, and let a few people dictate what the policies and laws will affect our families for the next 4 years.

The intensifying inquiry suggests that the Justice Department is examining the role of Mr. Trump and other officials in his White House in their handling of sensitive materials during the final stages of his administration.
In recent days, the Justice Department has taken a series of steps showing that its investigation has progressed beyond the preliminary stages. Prosecutors issued a subpoena to the National Archives and Records Administration to obtain the boxes of classified documents, according to the two people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

The authorities have also made interview requests to people who worked in the White House in the final days of Mr. Trump's presidency, according to one of the people.

The investigation is focused on the discovery by the National Archives in January that at the end of Mr. Trump's term he had taken to his home at the Mar-a-Lago resort 15 boxes from the White House that contained government documents, mementos, gifts and letters.

After the boxes were returned to the National Archives, its archivists found documents containing "items marked as classified national security information," the agency told Congress in February. In April, it was reported that federal authorities were in the preliminary stages of investigating the handling of the classified documents.

So this article seems to say the 15 boxes had already been returned to the national archives, were there more boxes or something.

If there were more boxes could they not issue an additional subpeona to aquire those boxes, rather than a gestapo style raid, such as they just performed.

From the article above it seems they had complied with returning the 15 boxes. Wheras a Clinton would just destroy the information that was requested. Which they have done in the past.

Seems like a very shady action by the Justice Department.

Trump did destroy some documents as well. The subpoena was directed to NARA. They can't be subpoenaed for documents that they don't possess or control.

I'm not a fan of trump, but this is exactly why they are so scared of trump - he actually is as reckless as the democrats are when he comes to maintaining democracy and has the guts to take similar actions they would take.

Republicans impeached Bill for lying about a blow job, an accusation that was spun out of multiple separate years long investigations. They investigated Hillary for essentially the same thing Trump is being investigated for now, which was spun out of one of a dozen or so partisan Benghazi investigations. That investigation and the GOP weaponization of it ("Hillary is days away from indictment, lock her up!") arguably handed Trump the election. Republicans have already gone on record that they will be holding Hunter Biden hearings when they take control of the House, hoping to spin off an allegation they can use against Joe.

But sure, if you pretend none of that ever happened, I suppose you could say the slippery slope just now started.
Get back to me when republicans start raiding personal residences of and spying with federal government agencies on high-ranking political opponents. What republicans did 30 years ago to Clinton was political theater as they knew he would never get removed from office, but they just took advantage of public statements Clinton had made. Clearly not good form, but it's a whole different level of malfeasance to do what the democrats have done for the past 20 years.

And what Trump did to HRC was exactly my point. From the Clinton impeachment to Trump getting elected, the republicans were spineless. Even the Clinton impeachment was spineless as they knew it wouldn't actually do anything other than win a few political points.

Trump is finally playing the Democrats game and you guys on the extreme left are getting your panties in a wad.

For those of us that actually love our democracy, we hate what Trump stands for because he is really just a democrat in sheep's clothing and his lack of morals and any sense of political decency are evidence of that. For those of us that want our democracy to survive and continue to thrive, we wish both democrats and Trump would stop escalating it, but Trump is a creation of the Democrats. He is the response of a group of people that are tired of being pushed around. I don't agree with Trump or many of the people that vote for him, but I can understand their frustration. And it's actions like the democrats latest act that will continue to keep people like Trump in power.

Remember the president has the ability to declassify materials before leaving the White House. So this is even more dicey for the FBI and DOJ than usual, requiring real specifics. This is a narrow path of appropriate surrounded by a very slippery slope banana republic..
