1862: Ambrose Burnside assumed command of the Union Army. His career in this position would be disastrous and his only other notable accomplishment was his contribution to etymology: the origin of the word sideburns.

1918: German Revolution: the Kaiser abdicated and a Republic was proclaimed from the Reichstag. It would be this government that would sign the armistice and the horrendous peace treaty, & thus get blamed for Germany's surrender in WWI.

1938: Kristallnacht: Nazi thugs go on a rampage across Germany, terrorizing & vandalizing Jewish homes and business and burning synagogues down.

1989: East Germany government opened access through the Berlin Wall. Once it was opened a crack, it was no turning back and soon hammers & chisels followed by bulldozers were demolishing the symbol of socialist oppression.

1831: Nat Turner was executed for the slave rebellion he had led a few months earlier. He and his followers had slaughtered dozens of white men, women & children.

1918: Armistice Day/Veterans Day: Early in the morning, representatives of German forces met with representatives of the Allied armies to hammer out the armistice: Germany surrendering to end WWI. As per their agreement, the guns went silent at 11 a.m.--the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

1921: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery was dedicated.
