1775: American Patriots captured Montreal.

1909: Balinger-Pinchot scandal broke. Essentially, a conflict between environmentalists and Pres. Taft's Sec. of the Interior. Long-term result: Theodore Roosevelt challenged Taft in 1912, therefore helping Woodrow Wilson win.

1982: Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. was dedicated.

1864: Gen. William T. Sherman began the March to the Sea which devastated much of Georgia and broke the back of the Confederacy.

1917: Georges Clemenceau became Premier of France. He would represent them during the peace talks after WWI with huge implications.

1943: Heinrich Himmler orders Roma (Gypsies) sent to concentration camps where many would die.

1977: Pres. Jimmy Carter hosted the Shah of Iran.

1907: Oklahoma became a state.

1945: German scientists were brought to the U.S. to develop our rocket program. Eventually, their work would pay off with the Mercury, Gemini, & Apollo programs.

1777: Congress submitted the Articles of Confederation to the states for ratification. Eventually all 13 states would do so and the document would serve the nation during the War for Independence but inherent weaknesses would lead to calls for change in 1787.

1869: Suez Canal opened.

1969: Beginning of SALT I negotiations between the US & USSR.

2003: Arnold Schwarzenegger became governor of California.

I know we bad mouth Texas a lot but when that terrible bonfire happen, Texas' band honored them at half time with a performance. All longhorn flags lowered out of respect. The first to do it

Yes, that was real class. Then the Aggies defeated them on the field!

For anyone interested, there is a very good documentary in the theaters now about the tragedy: The Thirteenth Man. It's well done.

1963 : President John F. Kennedy is assassinated when he is shot by a sniper while riding in a motorcade through downtown Dallas. In film shown around the world Jackie Kennedy was seen cradled her dying husband as the limousine sped to the emergency room at Parkland Hospital. Lee Harvey Oswold was later arrested for the murder but is shot By Jack Ruby a short time later.

1995 - Toy Story produced by Pixar is released as the first feature-length film created completely using computer generated animation. The film was not only a commercial success it was given great ratings by critics and won a number of awards including an Academy Special Achievement Award in 1996 for the first feature-length computer-animated film

1718: Notorious pirate Blackbeard was killed off of the coast of North Carolina.

1900: First Mercedes went for a test drive.

1942: The Red Arm encircled the Germans besieging Stalingrad. This would force the Germans to surrender, providing the Soviets with their greatest victory of the war and the turning point, along with the Battle of Kursk a few months later. From this point on, the Allies would push the Germans further back while their empire gradually collapsed.

1963: Assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy in Dallas. Texan Lyndon B. Johnson would take the oath of office aboard Air Force One at Love Field before taking off for the return trip to Washington.

1986: Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion.

1988: The U.S. unveiled the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

2005: Angela Merkel became Chancellor of Germany.

1981: Pres. Ronald Reagan signed a top secret document authorizing the CIA to recruit & support the Contras in their rebellion against the communist dictatorship in Nicaragua.

1864: Col. John Chinvington's Colorado volunteers massacred a group of Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians at Sand Creek, Colorado.

1947: The United Nations voted to partition Palestine to create two states: one Jewish, one Arab. The Arabs rejected this idea and instead attacked the new Jewish state of Israel. Essentially, they have repeated this approach over and over again ever since.

1963: Pres. Lyndon Johnson formed the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy.

1967: Robert S. McNamara resigned as Secretary of Defense. He was a key figure in developing America's Vietnam strategy under Pres. Lyndon Johnson.

1981: Actress Natalie Woods drowned in a boating accident off the coast of California.

2001: Death of George Harrison of the Beatles.

1824: The 1924 presidential election was sent to the House of Representatives since none of the 4 candidates had the required 131 electoral votes. War hero Andrew Jackson had 99 & John Quincy Adams had 84 but William Crawford had 41 & representative Henry Clay had 37. In what would later be known as the "corrupt bargain," Speaker of the House Clay gave his electoral votes to Adams who became president.

1913: Henry Ford's assembly line began operation for the manufacture of Model T's.

1955: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery city bus leading to the bus boycott and eventually the first real victory of the modern civil rights movement. It also launched the career of activist Martin Luther King, Jr.

1959: The U.S., USSR, & 10 other countries signed the Antarctica Treaty agreeing to make the continent free of any military.

1990: Construction of the Chunnel (tunnel underneath the English Channel) produced the first opening between the two halves. For the first time, England had a direct dry link to France.

1804: Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of France.

1823: During his annual message to Congress, Pres. James Monroe made an important statement about American foreign policy in relation to Latin America. This became known as the Monroe Doctrine. It was the brainchild of his Sec. of State, John Q. Adams.

1859: Fanatical abolitionist John Brown was hanged for his role in leading the Harper's Ferry raid.

1917: The new Bolshevik leaders of Russia proclaimed a cease fire during WWI & reach an armistice with the Central Powers. This freed up German forces for the Western Front and a final push to victory that failed due to the timely arrival of large numbers of American soldiers about a year after the U.S. declaration of war on Germany.

1942: Physicist Enrico Fermi produced the first nuclear chain reaction in his laboratory under the bleachers at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field.

1954: The U.S. Senate voted to censure Joseph McCarthy after his anti-communist crusade went too far in attacking the army.

2001: Enron filed for bankruptcy.

1941: The Japanese attacked America's Pacific fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor, ensuring the the U.S. would enter the war. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill's reaction, "I knew we had won."

2013: Baylor secures its first ever Big 12 Championship with a win over Texas in ice fog: 30-10.
