Know Ted personally and you have the wrong take on him. He's quite genuine, very Reaganesque in worldview, just without a Reganesque level of personal warmth. Funny thing I watched in his primary run....it was the GOP women who got behind him so strongly. He seems kinda wooden to men, but women like him. It wasn't a sex appeal thing at all. I think it was that they found him genuine. They believe him. and boy is he a good candidate. Not as warm as the FMRP, but he spreads elbow grease as well as any of them, never takes minute off from the campaign.

I think that's also true that, other than the culturally appropriated nickname, FMRP is genuine...what you see is what you get....an unabashed progressive.

He grabbed a shltload of ammo though. After agencies in 2008 started buying rifle and pistol ammo by hundreds of millions of rounds, it was scarce for normal citizens to find. A weapon is no good without ammo. I remember waiting in line at Academy on Friday mornings for them to unlock the doors because the ammo deliveries were on Thursday nights. I could only buy 1 box/per caliber/per customer/per day.

I think he had a no-win choice when his campaign came to an end. he risked losing supporters no matter what he did. The big concern about Trump from most Cruz'ers was that Trump was non-ideological and would govern from the center, cutting deals well left of center. Had Ted immediately endorsed Trump, it would have risked alienating his base. On the other hand, had he gone never Trumper, he would have limited his appeal to his base and risked marginalizing himself forever in the party. He chose the path of delayed endorsement, which was the only practical choice he had. I wasn't at the convention, but know dozens who were, and TV did not accurately capture how hostile the reaction was to his non-endorsement. He chose to suffer the hostility short-term to retain his base and mount a comeback. His fortitude and good judgment have been rewarded and he is again a key player in the conservative movement, a testament to his skill at the game.

He's not without people skills. I remember one event at a hotel where he didn't check-in beforehand....just set his bags in a corner of the room. He started that day with a 0800 (that's EST, 0700 here) speech in South Carolina at RedState, then a two connection flight to DFW, a 2hr car ride to the event. We pulled into town about an hour before the event and knowing how tired he had to be, I offered to take him to my house for a shower or quick nap. He thanked me but said "just pull into that McDonalds right there." So he walks into the restroom at a busy McDonalds, sets his contact lens case on the counter, and proceeds to wash his face and replace his contact lenses. And Me, the clean freak, is thinking "geez, I won't hardly go to the bathroom at a McDonalds....this is a pretty unpretentious guy, turning down a cot & hot at a nice home in favor of a well-used public restroom." After he finishes, he starts making fundraising calls. When we got to the event, he set his bags down in the room and starts networking. Then he does the event. Then he speaks to every person who stayed behind to talk to him. It's 10:30 before he's checking in. I pointed across the lobby to the bar at a handful of women who'd organized the event and said "that's the wicked witches of the local right wing, right there....don't let them see you or you'll get another grilling." He laughed and we parted. The next day, I find out from the ladies that he took his bag to the room and came back down and chatted with them until at 2:00am. And they loved him. That's a 19 hour day, if you're counting, and he finished it with the grassroots, the people whose husbands come home with grease under their fingernails.

He isn't particularly charming or anything. Just smart, principled, and willing to outwork everybody. Good candidates are like that.

If you like him on the issues, you'll like him as a senator. I think that applies to both of our candidates this go-around. We don't always get a clear choice like that.
