While I understand your answer and want to support it, I just can't and don't want to legalize drugs.
What we are doing now is not effective and is a waste of resources, and incarcerates many who otherwise are not criminals. I know you wouldn't be in favor of implementing what is necessary to shut down drug trafficking - so why continue what we are doing? Prohibition didn't work, and this isn't either.

Drove along the 62 mile El Paso border wall for about half an hour yesterday.

Actually there are 3 barriers . Shorter ( older ) fences topped with razor wire in front and behind the newer - larger steel barrier. Large deep ditch running between the newer steel barrier and last old fence.

Border Patrol vehicles parked alongside the wall about every 2-4 miles mixed in with the occasional El Paso Police car .

Anyone on this message board who thinks walls 'don't work' or would be 'easy to climb over' should see this .

No way in Gods green earth is anyone getting into the US through the barriers I saw.

Hell if someone did somehow manage to overcome all those obstacles they should be fast tracked immediately into US Army Special Forces .

Yeah sounds like a prison fence with razor wire on each side of steel barrier and a ditch added

I've always thought enough razor wire before and on top of a >10' fence guarded like you say would work. Sounds EP has 3-4 times that much. If it keeps convicts from escaping from prison then ........ common sense

Can ya send us pictures of this?

Thanks for update

If I have time tomorrow will go to the North section of the barrier near the New Mexico state line and take a couple of pictures .

El Paso is expanding to the northeast and east....and the new areas areas look pretty decent .

But oh brother along the south side of town working down the lower valley along the international border looks worse than ever.

Zero zoning, horrible junkie construction, trash and iron bars on the doors / windows of 90% of the houses .

Only hint that you are still in the US is most of the signs are still in English. Otherwise you would swear you were in a Juarez barrio .

lol.... the border has been a mess for a looong time. like forever.

there are spots all along the border where it is a 'no go zone' after dark.

only LE - police/ mil / BP - heavily armed and well-equipped - head into these areas. no one here would last more than a few minutes at night. and if you're there when there is 'traffic' - you'll be lucky if they give you a warning shot.

this is nothing new - been that way forever.

only the people who have literally no idea and have never lived on the border pontificate about life and security on the border.

such is the way things are on the interwebz.

and feel free to ask my family in Harlingen if it is not a drug issue...

Your family is a tiny, tiny, tiny, sample.

The Drug War is a failure. Tying it to the border wall doesn't change that. We incarcerate an insane amount of people.

Drug traffic has decreased, not because of walls but because of two main things: a legal drug market in most states, and the application of technology at the border. See the big bust just this week.
We've never been willing, as a free republic, to implement and take the drastic action necessary to stop the inflow of drugs into the country. In the face of that unwillingness, the only resonable option is to legalize, regulate and tax the use of drugs. That will take the profit away from the criminal element, and give us the ability to better manage drug use, and eliminate the cost of unecessary incarceration.
The problem is whether you draw a line on certain drugs, and if so, where and who does it?

When I was young, the argument against marijuana was that it is a 'gateway' drug, leading users to deadlier drugs like cocaine and heroin. Now people generally believe weed is harmless, maybe beneficial for some, and while drugs like cocaine and heroin are understood to be dangerous, addicts are considered in much the same way as alcoholics. Some of that is a good thing, but I believe the traffic of recreational drugs is bad for society in general and very dangerous for the users.

Certain drugs are far too dangerous to be used without direct medical prescription and supervision, let alone recreationally. PCP and Meth are two very obvious examples.

Sadly, no. His advocacy for abortion on demand, no matter what, is unconscionable.

There is a case to be made for some abortions as unavoidable. BBL does a good job of making that case.

Waco has no regard - whatsoever - for the children killed in abortions.

I will not call evil 'good', simply to placate a political abomination.

Depends on the drug and it must be done federally. For example....Nevada has made marijuana legal for medicinal and recreational use, but because it is still listed as a Schedule 1 drug, any monies received from its sale cannot be placed in a federally insured bank (the business just can't open up an account at Wells Fargo) so you're left with weed businesses using on-site safes or falsifying business activities to get an account. Nevada, due to the gambling, also has distance requirements for weed prohibition (last summer when I was at Encore, they routinely walked the drug dogs around to insure there was no weed in the casino). Then there's the work place/occupation rules, driving codes, etc. Basically a new regulatory scheme must be developed and executed.

It gets taxed and does cut into cartel business. It also grows, pun intended, new small businesses which also increases state tax revenue.

An nobody has ever died from a weed overdose...other drugs not so much.

drugs are already basically legal - certainly widely available. hasn't reduced the problem. hasn't stopped people from OD'ing. millions dead.

so increasing the supply likely isn't a viable option.

and the tax revenue hasn't been anywhere close to what was anticipated. taxes are so high - the illegal market drugs are cheaper - so it stays in place. and these growing fields become toxic wastelands - doing serious damage to the environment.

so that argument doesn't work either.

and then there's the fentanyl problem. I dont think anyone advocates for legalizing fentanyl??
