1776: The Second Continental Congress officially declared independence from Great Britain.

1826: On America's 50th birthday two signers & authors of the Declaration of Independence died within hours of each other. John Adam's last words were that Jefferson still lives, but he was off by a few hours.

1863: Confederates surrendered Vicksburg to General Ulysses S. Grant leaving the Union in complete control of the Mississippi River.

1884: France gave to the U.S. the Statue of Liberty.

1776: The Liberty Bell rang to call the people of Philadelphia to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

1853: Commodore Matthew C. Perry sailed into Edo Bay (Tokyo Bay) requesting the normalization of relations. This ended 250 years of self-imposed isolation and led to a period of turmoil and crisis culminating in the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate and leading to the Meiji Restoration, a new government determined to modernize Japan thus beginning the amazing transformation of a backwards country into a modern economic, political, and military powerhouse.

1850: Pres. Zachary Taylor died and Millard Fillmore became president in his place.

1941: British cryptologists broke the code of Germany's Enigma machine. This was an invaluable tool for the Allied war effort against Germany during WWII.

1984: Geraldine Ferraro named VP candidate. She was the first woman to be a candidate in one of the top two spots for a major party. In the end, Walter Mondale never had a chance as Ronald Reagan was reelected in a huge landslide.

1787: Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance organizing the territory north of the Ohio River (modern day Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, & Minnesota). This provided for the growth of the nation, the eventual addition of new states, and, through the influence of Thomas Jefferson, it halted the expansion of slavery--an important step.

1793: French revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat assassinated in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday.

1943: The Soviet Red Army defeated the German Wehrmacht in the Battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in history. Together with the victory at Stalingrad a few weeks earlier, this marked the turning point on the eastern front as the Russians began pushing the Germans westward, ultimately all the way to Berlin.

1806: Zebulon Pike began his voyage of exploration of the American West.

1918: Second Battle of the Marne: the Germans launched their final offensive of WWI. It was a complete failure, thanks to brilliant strategic moves by Gen. Petain and the infusion of thousands of fresh American soldiers, leading to an Allied counterattack that broke the backs of the Germans ultimately leading to their surrender.

1965: Mariner 4 passed over Mars and began sending data back to earth.

1979: Pres. Jimmy Carter's "malaise" speech in which he described the "crisis of confidence" America was experiencing, one of a moral and spiritual nature.

i remember watching the Apollo 11 launch laying on the living room floor. Awesome stuff.

I don't remember it at all, I was 3.5 years old! I don't remember any of the early space stuff (except maybe a vague memory from the mid-1970s). But I certainly an appreciate the significance of this Saturday!

1945: Pres Truman met with Stalin for the first time at the Potsdam Conference. The day after the first successful test of the atom bomb, he explained to our ally that we had a new powerful weapon but he was vague on the details and therefore not entirely honest. Stalin may have known more than he did (or as much) since his spies had kept him well informed of the Manhattan Project.

1955: Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California.

1975: America's Apollo 18 docked in space with the Soviet Soyuz 19.

1925: Publication of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf ("My Struggle).

1936: The Spanish Civil War began.

1969: Sen. Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge at Chappaquiddick on Martha's Vinyard. He managed to get out but the pregnant woman in the car with him drowned. After waiting several hours, he finally reported the accident. The "scandal" (after all, he was a Kennedy) ended his presidential aspirations but that's about it.

1553: Lady Jane Grey, the nine day queen, deposed as Mary Tudor, the rightful queen ascends to the British throne. She was later executed.

1799: Napoleon's army, while on a silly adventure in Egypt, discovered the Rosetta Stone which eventually provided the means to translate ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. It is now in the British Museum in London.

1848: The Seneca Falls Convention convened in upstate New York to organize a national effort to promote women's rights, particularly suffrage.

1944: Col. Claus von Stauffenberg's assassination plot against Adolf Hitler failed. Hitler survived and the conspirators were arrested, tortured, and executed. And WWII dragged on for another 10 months.

1969: FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY, NEIL ARMSTRONG & "BUZZ" ALDRIN WALKED ON THE MOON.

1977: A flash flood struck Johnstown, Pennsylvania killing 84 people.

2012: A crazed young man walked into an Aurora, Colorado movie theater and murdered a dozen people.
