On August 1, 1990 we were touring Italy and attended Pope John Paul II's weekly audience. Also in attendance was a big group of US Navy from what I think was the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, which had been on maneuvers in the Mediterranean and was docked near Rome that week. IIRC they left on the 3rd and were the first US carrier in the Persian Gulf.
