The one that always intrigued me was a Wall St job offer where i would be able to get my traders license and coached on some investments to start out. My friend did it and made a lot of money, paid $1500 to get in. I said no didnt take the risk.

Look back at 60 and wonder what the big risk was, i was single, could stay with uncle. Would have cost time, food and transit cost. Now i say, take a year and give it a shot. An experience if nothing else.

Go back up a bit, there is a tweet saying GenX is now the biggest spender.

For some reason I can't upload photos but a gas station in the city was $5.19/gallon. Gas outside the city was $4.79.

People can't afford to get to work in these conditions. RIP to the super commuters

People are resourceful. Carpool with one other person and drop that price to the equivalent of $2.40/gallon.

Just takes time. The boomers and Genx were not much different, 35 is when you start earning real money. Until then you gain experience.

The 20 somethings these days expect six figures. Either personally or from their significant other. Unrealistic expectations.

My first salary was $25,000 in 1986. I was making bank compared to my fellow college grads.

$25,000 in 1986 dollars is $75,000 in 2026 dollars...and that's if you take the Fed's inflation pronouncements to be accurate. I would argue it's closer to $100,000.

If those penguins exported themselves to the USA, they probably did pay a tariff, unless they smuggled themselves on one of the many icefloes that wash up in the Florida Keys.

I guess the more important question is what percentage are facing this and is it increasing?

the middle class is worse off but they can not eat out as much and do less leisure activities.

Those that are near the poverty line are the ones who already did that and dont qualify for govt assistance are the ones in real trouble.

Kind of to your point..

The K-Shaped economy is worsening:

Sentiment among consumers earning less than $50,000 is down to ~82 points, the 2nd-lowest since May 2023 and in-line with the 2020 pandemic low.

At the same time, sentiment among those earning $50,000-$100,000 is down to ~90 points, near the lowest since December 2023.

The sentiment index for both groups has been in a downtrend over the last 14 months.

Meanwhile, sentiment among consumers earning over $100,000 has risen since February, to ~110 points, and stands above the 2023-2024 average.

This comes as lower-income households are increasingly concerned about surging gasoline prices that are up +60% year-to-date, to $4.56/gallon, the highest since 2022.

Financial strain on lower-income consumers is accelerating.

the poverty line for house holds is 33k for a family of 4. As the amount made rises, more services are disqualified. SNAP disqualification is like above 130% of poverty line. Medicaid is lower for adults $17880 is the max a mairried couple can earn together and receive medicaid as adults.

Where does one live in America on a 1490 a month income for 2 people? At least with SNAP, your family of 4 can make $3500 a month before being cut off.
