Not surprised to see Whole Foods at the bottom of the list. I was surprised to see H-E-B edge out Walmart. The shopping experience at H-E-B is so much better than at a Walmart... so I would have assumed the prices were higher.

Kind of tricky. My wife and I shop at different places for different things. HEB usually has good produce but sometimes Kroger has better produce prices. CostCo has some things where they are always the best price, but not on other things.

No one store is the best for everything.

Here we see Bessent echoing what I've said here many times - "trade policy always serves national security policy." Our central problem today is, we ignored that after the fall of the USSR and continued globalism and green energy nonsense long beyond their utility, thereby eroding productive base to the point of national security vulnerability.

It helps to have different stores. Competition benefits consumers. Here in New Braunfels we have three HEB's, Walmart, and one smaller store but nothing else. I wish we had a Kroger & an Aldi.

last wednesday went to lunch with a group that included 2 south koreans, a black man, a hispanic man, lovely lady from India and they drove a lincoln nav, a tesla, etc.. the one white guy in the group drove an 8 year old camry. Skin color had nothing to do with being rich or poor or quality of health.

those lower income/blue collar guys binge drank and smoked more than the rich on average.

Also, poor people tend to eat more sugary foods and drinks leading to more cardiometabolic diseases.

Cheap junk food and lack of nutrition education sets many up for failure

It is also an access and numbers issue.

First, go to the "poor" areas and look around? Not exactly a Whole Foods environment.

Second, the have to make every dollar count. Lettuce, Broccoli and Carrots will not feed a family of 5. Rice, Corn products and other "inner shelf" products do.

You describe a strategy for one or two maybe. But, try shopping around the outside of the store and see how much $50 gets you.

In your rush to respond, you missed my point. Historian comes from a background that are relatively effluent compared to poor working people and have generally had access to better health practices. Historian's experiences may not reflect the realities faced by those with fewer resources.

I worked decades studying risk and warning Controllers and CFOs about delinquency. It's a first indicator of cash problems, which at the very least demand escalating countermeasures.

Hassett sounds like many people I know, who go into denial rather than correct their course.
