Iowa women's basketball head coach decides to retire. This might alter things in the transfer portal.

Iowa was returning some key pieces next year and picked up a really big transfer in Lucy Olsen who was the #3 scorer in the nation. I wonder if she knew that she was going to retire when she committed.

Will be interesting to see who new HC is. The Associate HC, Jan Jensen has been with Coach Bruder for many years, is highly respected, and players really like her. News on Coach Bruder retiring has been speculated for several months...

Sometimes promotion from within works, but it very often doesn't as far as keeping a program at a high level. I have no idea however if the source of recruiting over the last 20 years has been because of Bluder or because of Jensen. Bluder is a better than average coach, but certainly is not in the elite or legend category. Outside of the Clark years, their record has not generally been all that great in making or lasting in the tournament. Interesting to see how this works out.

For most programs outside of the generally recognized elite, it might not matter a lot because the expectations are lower. And before Clark, Iowa was never considered elite. Good, better than many, but not elite. Of course, I suppose many Iowa fans would expect the train to just keep rolling along without a blip with Clark gone, just like some here believed Baylor would avoid a blip after KM left. It is just not that easy to do.

I know in my high school back in the 60's, we were recognized as one of the best in Texas and when our hall of fame coach retired, the long-time assistant was promoted. The team kept its long-duration district winning streak alive for a year after the change, but the program went down hill afterwards. The assistant just didn't have the spark that the long-time coach provided. It took the program years and a few coaches to get back to the state tournament, which had always been a realistic yearly expectation.

I did not expect Ruby to commit to Baylor after Waiata Jennings committed to Baylor at guard.

I also did not expect Ruby to commit. If she was really interested I think she would have committed not too long after her visit.

I do hope we get either Williams or Dauda. I would really really really like to get Dauda. Supposedly she and Bella are very good friends. Hopefully that will help.

Vols were saying she committed more than a week ago on her visit but just announced.

Dauda never visited Waco before her first commitment due to covid, so hopefully she will like what she sees! Having the Bella connection helps, too.

Are you and others "in the know" and 99% confident she will commit to Baylor? Didn't know that Dauda and Bella were best friends. Hope she decides next day or two, it has been the longest wait.

the dead period made it long. And i do not think anyone knows for sure. I heard Iowa was big in the process but lost their head coach. It will be interesting. I think she can be huge for us and make us deep. It can be her and Vonleh at the 5 Bella and Buggs at the 4. And let our guards have the other three spots. I think coming off the bench is not a bad thing when you and your team have the opportunity to win a national championship. Amihere from South Carolina did it and has made it to the WNBA and stuck for two seasons so far. i'm not really sure who else was in the convo besides SC and Iowa. SC has a lot of people already down low. they brought in two incoming freshman for their post. I like our Odds in this battle.

Maryam can also play at forward when Aaronette is at center.

If Baylor lands Dauda expect Fontleroy to log the majority of her minutes on the wing [3] not at 4.
Some minutes at 4 definitely, but unlikely a majority. An 8 player rotation with Vonleh, Dauda & Buggs needing 25+ minutes each and the 4 & 5 only offering 80 mpg dictates that outcome.

Also: Last season the O worked so much better the higher the number of consistent 3 point shooters on the floor, but with Blackwell gone & Andrews, Walker & Van Gytenbeek all being 5'4 or shorter [notwithstanding what the official height listings might say] and Felder being 5'6 at best and more likely 5'5, against many teams Baylor will need height at the 3 in order to avoid getting swamped on the boards. Fontleroy logging most [if not all] of her minutes at the 3 [at least on O, she and Buggs can swap D duties] answers the size problem to some degree.

Finally reaching a point where we have more quality bodies than minutes available rather than the inverse.

By the way Cameron Williams from Michigan is off the table. She is going to Miami (FL), but this does confirm the Miami (FL) smoke.

That could put us on an even footing against teams that go big against us.

i also just think of a roaming DLP would be really good a lot like a Didi type of rebounder but on a bigger level. If she can really get a 3 this off-season mannnn we could be really good.
Dcheetah
How long do you want to ignore this user?
She shot 41.5% from 3 in HS and improved from 25-32% from 3 between her first and second year with Arkansas so if she could improve into the mid 30s or beyond that would be great!
Brusinbear2001

i'm more so talking about DLP shooting it. I think she will get more space with Vonleh and another good center.

Need to work on my reading skills. DLB did work on her 3 last summer and was doing pretty well but missed the few she took during the season. Would love to see her become more consistent with her midrange game but hitting some 3s could certainly open things up for her.

She won't be a reliable 3 point shooter until she totally reworks her shot mechanics.

Not Nina Davis bad, but bad.

I'd be happy is she can develope a reliable 15' jumper. It would make her much harder to guard.
