BREAM: The Journal says the percentage of delinquent credit card balances is 13%, the highest since the period following the financial crisis. People say they're using them for necessities. Your message to them?

HASSETT: We talk to the CEOs of the credit card companies all the time. Delinquency is different from default, and there's not any financial threat to the credit card companies. It's just people are taking a little bit longer.
Didn't realize credit cards aren't for necessities. Will have to break that habit, I guess.
absolutely break the habit. You are borrowing money to buy things before you make the money to pay for it.

Used well it can level the ebb and flow of money as you need it. Used poorly, it becomes a millstone around your neck as you try to stay afloat.

So easy to fall into the trap, I have been there..

I'm assuming they mean people in a situation of having to use credit cards they won't be able to pay off because they don't have the cash on hand.

Not people using credit cards for goods because it's more convenient than cash and to earn cash back or miles or whatever.

This statement is the problem.

He literally does not view Democrats as Americans or part of the electorate. They do not count to him. We can't have a WH that writes off half the Nation.

One of the most ignorant statements you've made on these boards. I'm probably one of the poorest here.

Look, you are a rich man and can certainly get better healthcare than blacks, blacks, or Asians in your cohort. because you can afford it.

Last Wednesday, I went to lunch with a group that included 2 South Koreans, a black man, a Hispanic man, a lovely lady from India, and they drove a Lincoln Navigator, a Tesla, etc. The one white guy in the group drove an 8-year-old Camry. Skin color had nothing to do with being rich or poor or quality of health.

The richest people generally received the best healthcare. For those born in 1947, racism was still deeply embedded in American society throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Many children of color began life with fewer healthcare opportunities and poorer access to medical services, which contributed to unequal health outcomes later in life.

Being healthy isn't limited to the rich. Plenty of sick rich people. Plenty of healthy poor people.

In your rush to respond, you missed my point. Historian comes from a background that are relatively effluent compared to poor working people and have generally had access to better health practices. Historian's experiences may not reflect the realities faced by those with fewer resources.

In your rush to respond, you just said Historian comes from a s h I t t y background. I beg to differ.

AFFLUENT means well off. EFFLUENT means sewage. One letter makes a huge difference.

Ok, so write it off????

Aren't we supposed to CORRECT those misbehaviors?? Doesn't someone have to correct it? This is turning into deathmatch. When the GOP loses power, the Dems will come back harder. Where does it end? With China in control...

Seems like you are more interested in retribution and upping the ante. Got those Dems, trashing the Nation is worth it.

No "retribution," no "upping the ante." Just observation. "Can't" is the term I was looking at. We certainly can and we certainly have. I didn't say it was good or healthy, but it most certainly was and is.

What was it the guy actually said that was so distressing?

The Dems are the ones doing bad. The GOP is doing great.

That is what is distressing coming from a sitting President. The person in that position is supposed to be looking our for all Americans, not just those that vote for them or a Political Party. We are supposed to be better than that.

Did the Dems do it? If so, so what? That Admin was wrong. This division is destroying the Nation, every year we are worse off, more in debt. The person the US needs is someone that gives a **** about both sides.

Imagine you spent 40 years doing the boring, responsible thing.

You opened a 401k at 23. You contributed every paycheck. You ignored the noise. You bought the index because Bogle told you to, because Buffett told you to, because every honest piece of financial advice for 30 years told you the index was the safest, most diversified, most rules-based way to own America.

The whole point was the rules.

The rules said: a company must trade for 12 months before joining the S&P 500. The rules said: it must show four consecutive quarters of GAAP profitability. The rules existed because in 1999 the index quietly bought a lot of stocks at the top, and pensioners paid the bill.

After the dot-com crash, S&P tightened the rules. Nasdaq tightened the rules. FTSE Russell tightened the rules.

For 23 years, those rules held.

Then SpaceX filed for IPO.

And the rules changed.

The S&P 500 waived the profitability requirement. Nasdaq cut its trading-history window from 90 days to 15. FTSE Russell cut its to 5.

Bloomberg Intelligence estimates the major index funds will absorb between 19% and 24% of SpaceX's float within six months. That's over $30 trillion of passive 401k and retirement money, mechanically buying a single newly public company at IPO valuations, because the rules said they had to.

Except the rules used to say they didn't.

Here's the thought exercise:

If you spend 40 years building a system designed to protect ordinary savers from buying overpriced stocks, and then you waive the protections the moment a sufficiently large stock asks you to, what was the system actually protecting?

Most of investing is about understanding what's a rule and what's a guideline.

A rule binds the rule-maker.

A guideline binds the saver.

You're allowed to find out which is which only after the fact.

"When you say 'American consumers are really down in the dumps,' what it is is Democrats are in the dumps. Republicans have actually stayed around 80% on that survey all the way through."

That is what bothers me. Why is the sitting President only caring about one Party. The guy is giddy about it. The better question is how do we get all to the 80%?

If being "down in the dumps" as consumers is limited to one party, it's probably not a reflection of economic reality, but political reality. These "down in the dumps" Democrats would probably not be as pessimistic if someone else was in the White House. This would, I think, work both ways. The 80 percent would probably have less confidence if someone else was in the White House, too. If Democrats want to have more confidence, maybe they could get a broader media diet that wasn't just "orange man bad" 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Not really. It wouldn't matter what Trump did or said, they are still going to hate him. You've had major media literally doctoring videos to make it look like Trump leading a coup on Jan 6 2021. Can't be immersed in that media environment without it making you a little nuts.

Strangely enough, living remains popular across income levels.

Fine, I'll stop arguing. But my point remains: people with fewer resources are more likely to get sick and less likely to receive the care they need. Unless that changes, the poor will continue to experience worse health outcomes than the wealthy.

When media reports talk about Trump saying there were "good people on both sides," and leave out where he said "I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally." That's not being conspiracy minded, that's just knowing what journalism is supposed to be and recognizing when it isn't. There are any number of examples.

A conspiracy generally requires conspirators working together, you don't need a conspiracy to have unethical individual media organizations or individual journalists. Bad journalism doesn't have to be a conspiracy, I don't know why you think it has to be.
