In my 35 years in the steel business, we never once had a sales meeting to find ways to lower prices. With less competition , U.S. producers will always raise prices. Why? Because they can.

I am not a total Dave Ramsey disciple… But I do subscribe to driving older cars and not having a car payment.

I too subscribe the the auto deal. I haven't bought a new car in 30yrs. Have always had good luck with the Certified Pre-owned cars. 5K-10K miles and let someone else pay roll off the lot depreciation. I also subscribe to the notion of if you can't pay cash, you need to set your sights lower. Hell, I bought my one and only super car type thing . It had 4k miles and saved $65K off the top in terms of depreciation.

The ultimate problem is that wages are dogsh**.

Pay has decoupled from productivity. Since the 70s, worker productivity has grown far faster than worker compensation.

Also Corporations are making baffling decisions right now. I've watched talented, productive employees leave for higher paying jobs while their companies refused to match the offer or fight to keep them. Then the company realizes that person was effectively doing two jobs, and it now has to hire two people as a replacement. Or they just put the work on everyone else and don't pay them more. This is rampant practice right now.

I can easily see a future where everyone runs lean, workloads are brutal, and pay stays low. It feeds itself: companies cut headcount to look efficient, the work piles onto whoever's left, and the best people burn out and leave because they have options. That leaves a weaker, less mobile workforce and no slack for training or innovation. AI gives firms a convenient excuse to keep headcount flat while expecting more output. Eventually it becomes the cultural norm: work hard and expect to barely get by.

Yeah, Old when does it become Trump's country?

Didn't like when transactional comes back from the other direction, huh? In an electoral system, you are going to lose. There are more have nots than haves and they will start voting themselves what they need if legitimate systems are not in place.

Keep cheering, the "sitting President"... Your cult meeting starting soon?

who in their right mind would have a$1000 car payment and used to "make it work". The only way this make sense is 0% financing and I still wouldn't do it. $1K to look "kick ass" is messed up.

Yeah, but raising minimum wage has caused prices to increase.

The main driver of higher prices is more likely to be government spending. When corporations price their goods, they usually have competition which keeps a check on what they can charge. For example, grocery prices and profits are up, but net profit margins are at their historic, very thin, levels.

Everything exists on a curve in economics. Raising minimum wage from current levels to $25/hr would probably noticeably raise prices. Raising the federal minimum up to say $10-$12/hr probably would not.

I worked a minimum wage job in high-school and during the first couple summers I was at Baylor, at a Chicken Express, when the federal minimum went from $5.15 gradually up to $7.25 (I made more than minimum but only just, like +$.15/hr). Prices did not change at all for any of those 3 step-ups from 2007-09.

The best minimum wage is zero. Instead, allow employees and employers to negotiate with each other. For those who think workers would not be paid a decent wage, a free market would fix that. Employers who underpaid would lose workers to competitors. But workers must be realistic: entry level workers are not worth $15 per hour. When forced to pay that (ie in California & Washington), restaurants replace people with machines or will close down.

When the government interferes, as with everything else, they create a mess.

The problem with the minimum wage debate is context. There is a huge difference between the minimum wage any business must pay even a new employee with no skills or experience, and the lowest wage a business can morally justify for an established and skilled employee.

The reason the difference matters, is that wages are part of an implied moral contract between employers and workers. Employees understand that there is a maximum average wage beyond which a company cannot afford to stay in business, while employers understand that there is a minimum wage necessary to keep your good employees, below which your company cannot be sustained.

It's undeniable that wages have been stagnant in growth when considered in real terms. That speaks to inflation as well as company planning. However, the additional financial incentives and benefits include participation in a 401k plan, often with some amount of company matching, in addition to possible benefits such as financial counseling or insurance.

There is more to the discussion than convenient memes.
