In Liberia, I did a fair amount of hunting in the jungle with local villagers as my guides, almost exclusively at night Game was not scarce, but once when we had a luckless night, my guide insisted we go to the main town in the area to consult the local witch doctor (an old man). We went do a modest shack, sat down on the old floor and explained our plight (in English). The old man listened, then got up started mixing a potion, all the while talking under his breath to himself (in Bassa). I didn't recognize all the stuff he mixed in, but among the items he threw in the dish was a Cola Nut, a splash of Sprite, a chicken feather, and some of his own spit. He stirred it all up, then stuck his thumb in the mixture and smeared some on the foreheads of me and my guide. Then he gave solemn instructions (again in Bassa) to the guide. and then we left.
When we got back in the truck, I asked the guide about the instructions the witch doctor gave him. Guide said that we must NOT shoot the first thing we saw that night. It would be the witch doctor who would assume the form of an animal to lead others to us. We did get a zebra duiker that night, the only one I got in 3 years of hunting, so who can say it didn't work. It was obvious that the guide was dead serious about the whole thing, so I did not joke with him about how the witch doctor experience reminded me so much of Richard Pryor's "Little Bitty Feets" story.
